Miss my Kom, Gus. We were blessed to have him for 12 years. Extremely loyal, stubborn and protective yet gentle with those he knew. Not for a first time dog owner. Bred to think for themselves and they do! They are smart problem solvers. I once was going through my gate with lawnmower not realizing the mailman was passing by. Gus leaped over me and the mower and was to the mailman in seconds flat! Mailman was terrified as Gus held him until I was able to get him. Mailman was about to use pepper spray as I ran screaming don’t spray him. The dog will absolutely not allow strangers on or near your property without your strong training to who is ok and isn’t. Often the Kom will determine that and instinctively be difficult to listen to the owner if he decides someone shouldn’t be there. Not for those not willing to take the time to train or wimpy owners. The video did not talk about grooming. The hair in the ears needs to be pulled out regularly and canal kept clean. The cords seen on the body can form in the ear canal quickly. Because of this very prone to ear infections. Otherwise very healthy, strong, quick and agile for their size. Gus was 125# and stood 28-30””. If Gus laid under the table and stood up he would lift it with his strong back and size. Cleaning and bathing is extensive. If left to form on their own the cords are about an inch wide and flat. Daily assistance splitting the cords while forming creates a more beautiful uniform coat. Bathing these cords can take an hour or more. To dry, the dog must be placed in a raised kennel so there is airflow all around. Fans should be placed around the kennel to blow on the dog to aid in the long drying time which can take up to 8 hours. If not dried properly it can take more than 24 hours and mold can form. If not bathed and dried regularly they can stink. An alternative is to keep them clipped but because of their size finding a good groomer can be difficult and expensive. The owner should learn how to do this. The dog does not like being handled by strangers. Socialization is mandatory! The coat ears and mouth should be handled frequently otherwise the kom may not allow the owner to do the grooming tasks. The mouth is wet and slobber is part of owning a Kom. One shake of the head and it goes everywhere 😆. The hair around the mouth needs trimming and cleaned a lot! A “potty” patch should be kept on hind quarters otherwise be prepared to occasionally clean poo off this area as it can get into the long hair or cords. Though some sources say they do not shed that is not true. They shed even in full cords. I have back issues and fell a few times. Gus stood next to me each time and allowed me to pull myself up using his strong body. While hubs and I love the breed and never regret owning one, at this point in life would not own another due to maintenance of coat. The physical and mental strength it takes to own one would be difficult at our age too. Gus has been gone since 2012 and we had a very difficult time getting over his loss. Our friends and family still mention him too. RIP Gus!

Gus sounded amazing. You can never replace them once they are gone. You could try a Puli though if you wanted another dog? They are like small Komondors. Still very protective and strong for a small/medium dog.

@@GSTripleF thank you for suggesting. I think I would love a puli! Not sure why I didn’t get one. It might have been concern about grooming since it would be similar to the kom. We now have a Black Mouth Cur. We love him. Really is a sweet, very obedient and loyal dog. Not stubborn at all but is fast. He will kill any animal he wasn’t raised with. His name is Hank and even after all this time occasionally call him Gus. What an impact Gus made in our lives! I will definitely keep a puli in mind next time around!

Had the pleasure of meeting one these giants yesterday in the snow while coming home from reno. She was only a year old about 85 lbs but she was a big girl. Very sweet disposition but constantly watching her surroundings. She took to me really fast and we became friends within seconds. I figured She was going to be a little aloof but maybe my soft demeanor towards her helped that. She liked my kids and instantly stood next to them and started monitoring her surroundings. Her handlers were really surprised I knew exactly what breed she was. I love livestock guardian breeds and the komondor is one of my favorites

I had 3 komondor. 2 was great and 1 was not so. 1 was outdoor dog and she wanted it that way( she was good). 2 was indoor/car riding dog. From the 2 indoor dog, I needed given 1 dog to someone who was better at aggressive dog. When I got her she was 6 month old who was kept in the kennel and was not socialized. Needless to say she was aggressive. I worked with her for about 6 month( training her, talking her to dog day care/training facility, bank, home depo/ dog parks and what not) She bit me twice and I was still willing to work with her, however when she bit a handler at doggy day care/training facility I realize she needed someone else who could best care for her. I think trick to having good Komondor is get them from good puppy moms and dads, get them when they are puppy and train, and socializing them from puppy hood.

Dear Eboni, the producers of this film are Hungarians. Komondorok is plural in Hungarian, and Komondors in English, as Komondor is the single form in both languages. Calling them Komondorok in English would be like sausage-ok, instead of sausages.

I wouldn’t dye his or her dreads as he will lick it or be allergic to color dye. The breed standard is white dreads. A lot of people trim hair around the eyes and backside. This video says the coat is easy but my friend said her dogs dreads had to be separated and soaped and rinsed. She would dry his hair with fans for 2 days.

You've got to be kidding me. Your doodle does not have "komondor hair". Very few breeds(pure bred) have the characteristic of "dreadlocked hair", in which "doodles" aren't included. So I can only assume that you've neglected to care for your dog's curly coat which has resulted in mats. These mats are not locks like you see in this video and they actually cause your dog a lot of pain. And before you try to invalidate the facts I stated above, I am a trained and certified groomer. I have experience with these breeds and even more experience with doodle mixed breeds. I've never heard someone use this excuse for their matted doodle. It's extremely unacceptable to be completely honest.

All I can recommend is please brush your dog daily starting now. If the mats are too bad and are causing your dog pain, they will need to be shaved.

Hard to believe but they can see. That coat is meant for protection against predators. Koms were bread to guard the sheep flock and can ward off bears. Their keen sense of smell also helps but hair over the eyes causes no vision problem.

Marie their eyes are very sensitive to sunlight, the fur doesn't bother them at all. They are evolved like that, it is a kind of protection. They see perfectly fine, it's not like how when your hair is in your eyes, it bothers you. - a Hungarian who lived outside the city all their life and met a whole lot of pulis and komondors

You are right, I have two komondors, and I cut the fur in front of their eyes. They dont see well, if it's covered. I experienced often, when their fur longer in front of their eyes, they dont run. When I cut it, they are happy, running fast, playing more. THEY CAN SEE FINALLY. Also, summertime I cut the fur short on their whole body, since it will grow again, till winter comes. They are always very happy when there is not too much fur on them, they immediately start running and fooloing around. This amount of fur is very heavy. Everyone, who says their eyes must hide behind this mop, interested merely in them, looking authentic. I don't say, its abuse not to cut the fur, but surely, people should do what their dog need. They are so good dogs, they deserve to see and walk freely.

@@CookieManatee I hear you and appreciate your comment and see you have plenty experience with these breeds.. Still I feel for animals so much and my common sense is telling me that’s not right - it’s just I don’t like how we humans decide about animals how they should ‘look like’ - they would live through anything, won’t they, they are really defenceless in this… it’s just sad to me they ‘had to adjust’ to their hair style over ages… That’s all…🙏🙏
