BEFORE buying the FUJI X-T5 - WATCH THIS FIRST! In this weeks video I check out the image quality of the new Fuji X-T5 and see if it is any better than what I'm shooting with now the X-T3. The results are pretty interesting. Surprising actually. I compare the image quality of the raw files of both cameras trying to see if there is a big difference. I also ran a High ISO test of both cameras to see if there was a big difference.

Im a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it type of guy”. My two cameras are a NikonD700 and a Fujifilm XT2. Both give great images. Every accolade each received when new still holds true today. In a few years all those XT5s will also be called “junk” and “paperweights” but they will in fact still be awesome cameras. I see no need to keep spending thousands of dollars on equipment renewal every few years if there is nothing wrong with what you already have.

I still shoot with older models, X-T2, X-Pro2 and even an X-E2s. I bought an X-T3 and after a year with it, I bought a second body. I've said that these two X-T3 cameras are my last cameras and being in my mid-60s, I still think that is true. I'd love the on board image stabilization and the in-camera 4:5 aspect ratio of the X-T5, but not the huge files of 40 MP. My X-T3s plus my arsenal of older bodies will still be the cameras for the rest of my shooting days.

only if you have posted it before I bought my XT5 ... I am a Nikon user and when I bought this camera, obliviously, I compared it to my Nikon picture quality and to tell the truth I was disappointed with the money I spent I did not get the satisfaction with image quality and details I was expecting, although in time I am waiting to be stand corrected. Nikon D200(more then 10 years old) and Nikon D3400(more then 5 years old) have better detail and sharpness (all this is before any editing) and also less mega pixals.

Thanks Kirk, appreciated your review. I use and xt2 and xt3, I enjoy shooting a wide range of genre. One particularly here in NZ is astro shots. So noise is one of the concerns. Normally this can be improved by software eg sequator or Topaz. I was considering moving up to the xt5 for improving the noise but it looks like there isnt any real improvement. With the xt5 having the same sensor as the xh2 then it doesnt look to have any advantages to upgrade. ?

Kirk I also wanted to say thanks for a very revealing comparison video. In testing my XT3, I am fine going up to 6400 if that is what it takes - the "grain" that comes out the other side usually looks fine to my eyes. Now I'll try 8000 since, why not? In my own testing I thought the XT3 looks pretty much grainless up to ISO 3200 if you aren't "pixel peeping". But I don't have a super high-resolution monitor so perhaps ignorance is bliss. Your ISO test was very interesting and well staged - amazing how noisy the XT5 looked, and how well it "cleaned up" as a JPEG. It sounds like you also noticed a little reduced dynamic range - shadows not quite as deep. Basically this new sensor overall seems like it should not disappoint. Supposedly the performance of the 26mp XT3 was improved on the XT4, which had the same sensor but less noise or something like that. Maybe an XT6 will improve a little more on the sensor output, or maybe the stacked sensor will appear at some point on another option. I'm waiting on upgrades since I really like my XT3 and the image quality satisfies me 90% of the time (the other 10% usually being my own damn fault). No battery grip on the XT5 was also deal-killer for me - the "photography-centric" camera absolutely should offer a grip for the bigger, heavier lenses a pro would use. I'm not sure the $125 add on they are selling would suffice (since now you're also approaching at XH2 pricing with no benefit of extra battery life). IMO Fuji made a stupid move there probably to save some pennies. I also would rather have the metering switch over a "movie/stills" switch ala XT3. Way more handy. Or maybe just another programmable custom button somewhere to let me toggle such a thing.

Thanks Kirk. Very interesting to see how you review each image with your experienced eye. I'm curious, though, why untouched RAW files are the best comparison for the shadows or dynamic range. It seems like a better comparison would be if you lighten the shadows and then see which sensor has more info to discover. Even more to the point, I’m wondering why 100% on both cameras is the best comparison. Seems like rendering to the same final print size (i.e. 100% on the X-T5 vs 154% on X-T3) and then comparing detail, color, and sharpness would be the true comparison of whether the 54% increase in megapixels translates to better image quality. (The worse noise on the X-T5 at High ISO makes sense to me. Those photocells on the X-T5 are the smallest on the market, to my knowledge.) I didn't buy an XT3 because I didn't think it was enough of an upgrade from my XT2. (I did buy an X-T30 which is a beautiful little camera.) I opened my new X-T5 a few days ago and I'm just getting to know it.

Very nice comparison, enjoyed it a lot. I’m mainly a Canon FF user but added a Xt4 last year and to me it was quite the adjustment. How the Fuji processes basically everything is a whole new world that opened up. So far it has been a great experience. Both the xt3 and 5 are impressive cameras. I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I saw the high iso results but it kind of baffles me that the grain match up in both cameras. If i compare the Canon 5Dm iii with the iv it’s a world of difference. Also on dynamic range it’s ridiculously improved in the iv. From what I get here is that Fuji has been handling it pretty good throughout this line all along?

This is a favorite lens for for many Fujiflim shooters and certainly considered a very sharp and professional quality lens. Is it really not capable of handling the hi-res sensor? Good IQ analysis Kirk! However, my buying decision would also cover other aspects of the camera including IBIS and AF performance, among other factors. Also I would not be upgrading but rather a first time Fuji user. The only dislike I have is that the XT-5 is basically a "dumbed down" XH2 - Fuji did not want to make the XT-5 too good as to hurt XH2 sales. Lack of a full grip option is a bit of a minus too, but I can live without a full grip. So, overall for me the XT-5 is the way to go. As for the 50r yeah nothing beats a MF sensor for ultimate IQ, but in photography there is an optimum tool for every purpose - speed and handling vs. quality.

This is an excellent, well balanced review. Unfortunately KZread is awash with videos serving the interests of camera addicts and it might help those unfortunates, to take a step back and ask themselves, “what do I do with my pictures.” I used to be a bit fixated on sensor size and pixel count until I realised I only print to A3 size pictures and load up a memory stick to display photos on a TV. I have a full frame Canon and a APS-C Nikon and nobody, and I mean no one, can distinguish between identical photos taken on these cameras printed to A3. I found this to be a very sobering exercise for a former pixel-addict! Unless you display In galleries or your commissions demand a specific output then don’t let sensors and camera types distract you from enjoying your art.

I just made the same jump from the X-T3 to the X-T5. What I am finding shooting wildlife (most recently bald eagles) is that the added resolution is huge when cropping in. With the X-T3 I would need to spend some time in post refining the details. With the X-T5 images however I am zooming into 600% and the images are just sharper with more detail so I am now spending almost no time refining the details. While I haven't done any macro work in a while this will be another area when the resolution comes into play. So, for my use case, the added resolution is a major upgrade. Outside of the sensor's resolution is the tracking ability of the X-T5 over the X-T3. Capturing birds in flight, umm, my capture rate when up leaps and bounds. Here is a sample. @@KirkWilliamsonphotography the new Fuji primes are legendary IMO and produce the best images I've seen on my “old” 26mp sensor. Also the resolution gain of the new 40mp sensor is about 24% overall, not 40% (you have to take the square root of the change). It is actually a tad smaller jump in resolution than the jump from 16mp to 24mp. Anyway, the new primes are razor sharp wide open at f1.4, well corrected, fast, almost silent autofocus. I have the 23mm f1.4 LM WR and I love it. Even in crappy light it seems to track very well, focus fast (and 0.20x mag at like 8 inches "quasi macro"), and produce a high quality image. It has been worth every penny so far. I picked up the 56mm f1.2 WR which I think is slower, and probably won't track nearly as well, but so far the image quality is just gorgeous. Better lenses are more important than new sensors, IMO, and the new crop is looking good (I am also a big fan of the Red Badge 50-140, gorgeous, fast lens). You could get both the primes I got for less than an XH2 and it would be an all-around upgrade, IMO. The F2 lenses are also legendary and excellent, from what I've heard, someday I'd like to play with the 35mm f2 or 50mm f2, but every time I go down that road I start thinking I'd be happier with the more "versatile" 16-55 f2.8. Not trying to sell you on anything, since maybe the image quality gains would seem marginal to someone already rocking great lenses and happy with them, but I can say that indeed it does actually seem to get better. For the record I was seeking more reliable autofocus and not just image quality, since better quality doesn't really matter if I can't get the shot. My subjects are always on the move. Happy shooting!

The XT3 taught me that a single lamp in a room at night does not cut it if you want to see the best it can do - cameras are nothing like human eyes. Best investment I've made so far is not a lens but a flash - once I saw what the XT3 could really do I knew that my "lesser" photos were tending to reflect poor light rather than poor gear (autofocus being a separate issue but one that also relates to available light). The range of quality I get from this camera is pretty much "acceptable to print but pretty poor" to "a professional was here".

Image quality when viewing the entire images should not really be any big differences. Heck when I compare images from my 2009 Nikon D90 to my X100V or XT2, if I am not pixel peeping the Nikon holds up well. When pixel peeping there is a huge difference but If you were viewing both of them on something like a cell phone or tablet it would be hard to tell the difference. Having said that I would much rather shoot with the XT2 or the X100V for a bunch of other reasons. I am sure that the XT5 would be yet another step up in many ways but probably not in real world image quality. I shot an event with my XT2 and my wife helped while using the Nikon D90. All said and done the customer could not tell the difference in the images when viewing them normally. Most people do not pixel peep but they look at the overall aspects of a photo. Mostly photographers and geeks tend to pixel peep. I am both of those so I really have to work hard to not pixel peep. Thanks for the video.

Thank you Kirk! From an IQ perspective it’s great the see they are basically identical. Which means, as you said, you now have more flexibility to crop. Hopefully Fuji will utilize the 40mp sensor in all new models moving forward. However, where do they go from here? Have we finally seen the top of the APS-C sensor? Also, I appreciate you taking the time to compare against the 50r. It’s one of those cameras where I think I want it more than I will actually like using it (due to size and weight).

Harold I think that has to be it for aps-c sensor wise. I can't see them going past 40mp. I REALLY want the 50R and one lens just to start. But it will probably never happen.

Just picked mine up. I have the XT20, XT3 to compare. For me it was it's size, battery, loss of flippy screen and Eye focus, (I'm lead to believe the video is up there in the high marks out of 10). The XT4 was never on my list. My M10 keeps my grounded in the world of photography. Interesting video, thank you.

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography it's just a comparison of the xt3 vs the xt 5 for auto focus is what I was hoping for, that's what is going to sell this camera to me. It doesn't need to be Sony, but it does need to be considerably better for me to bother selling my XT3 and paying the extras $1000 for an xt5. "Pretty good" doesn't sound worth it is all.

Yes definitely a personal choice.. For me, personally, the 90mm is my most used lens, which I shoot 95% of the time in portrait mode, so the lack of a battery grip for the T5 makes it a less than ideal choice.. also the T2 still seems to be the best of the Fujis as far dealing with noise at high ISOs, which is also very important to me.. No doubt the T5 is a beautiful camera, I'd love to have one.. but for what I shoot and the way I shoot, I haven't seen anything that would make me a better photographer, or produce better images

The X-T3 is very clearly NOT better than the X-T5 at 12800 - there is significantly more visible detail in the jpeg from the X-T5 than from the X-T3, which is showing signs of excessive oversmoothing by then, and you could clean the X-T5 image quite a bit more and retain most of that detail, so the signal to noise is better in the X-T5. (Noise by itself is not a meaningful measure of quality) I would even say, based on these images, the advantage of the X-T5 is more pronounced at 12800 than at lower ISOs. Of course all of that only really tells us about the built-in jpeg denoising algorithms and their (default) settings, not the sensors, and those algorithms don't matter to anyone who has an actual use for more than a 6MP sensor.

  • @KirkWilliamsonphotography

    @KirkWilliamsonphotography

Not sure I agree. In the raw image there is quite a bit more noise in the X-T5. But that is my opinion and that won't buy anyone a cup of coffee.

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Hi, thanks for the video. I too don't think that the new sensor is worse at high iso. The different shutter speed shows that the X-t3 high iso was shot with 3 stops more light. In my experience the noise level doesn't only depend on the iso value but also on the level of ambient light. Also, shouldn't we also compare with a downsized X-t5 file to get the same image size on both cameras? Just my thoughts, kind regards.
