So many negative comments here really make me think people have no empathy or understanding what this film was about. It's a study of a family and each individual reaction to a catastrophic event.. There is no definitive right or wrong answer as to any reaction to the event. Only your personal reaction and which character you identify with the most. All are victims here. Saying that, I think the movie was well acted and overall made me think, which was it's purpose. I'd score this an 8/10. (Some scripted lines did not fly well)

If it is a non-skippable ad and longer, I use that opportunity to get a drink, something to eat, go to the toilet, etc. Just a way of giving a very tiny fraction of gratitude back to someone who has taken the time to upload and create content we enjoy.

This film was a disturbing reality jolt. We're forced to face our own dilemma ~ whether or not to defend family, despite the truth that may condemn them. Brilliant acting by Streep, Neesom and Furlong bring authenticity to the screen that left me dazed~and as reflective as the river beneath their canoe... Thank you for posting.

Terrific acting by everyone. Captivating story. Gr8 directing. Very convincing. No movie is original. Someone has thought of it before. Maybe they write it down. My Mother had no life. She dedicated it to her husband's and children's needs. I do remember one serious discussion. She looked at us very coldly and said "I will never lie for you". Important lesson to children to teach them that decisions have consequences. Because most that, would never lie for my son either.

This movie has a serious flaw: it is ignorant of how defense attorneys work. Jacob should tell the lawyer the truth; the lawyer is under no compunction to tell the court. It's called attorney client privilege. Without knowing the facts, his lawyer is operating blind. I also can't believe a defense lawyer wouldn't insist on interviewing Jacob alone.

A very complex and interesting movie to observe relationships and what moves them. These parents obviously loved their son STILL this father did not act on love he acted on GUILT which is most generally an ego feeling - it was the mother that acted on LOVE, nurturing and caring for her son´s SOUL. It seemed quite amazing that this movie was edited in a way to make her appear as a wrong doing mother - right upto the end. The lawyer trying to make her feel guilty - what he wanted was to win the case - he didn´t care a dam about the kid - the father wanted to mitigate his guilt about his very clear violence with which he treated his son. He was selfish and tremendously manipulative ... stood in awe as I watched the unfolding of the screen play. TRUTH is not always the easiest path to take, but it surely frees the soul to live out that which it is meant to live.

What a great script !!!! Morality vs Reality !!! The tug between being truthful and to be punished for it or to be escapist in the face of horrible consequence. Every person behaves differently. This family did in one way. I love the era when scripts were written logically and sensibly. The father and the lawyer were realistic. The son and the daughter and mother idealist. The tug of eternal war between these 2 is portrayed perfectly in the movie.

It was a sudden situation that hit the family, something never faced before. What can a father and mother do other than protect their son? The little sister was so adorable and mature, helplessly watching the tragedy. The father wanted to cover up, the mom wanted to come clean and the lawyer got confused. But the judge hit the nail on the head. Well, the law says people have to pay when a rule is broken. There's one interesting point that the family and lawyer missed - Looking at the kid's build and type, it's unlikely that he would be capable of a brutal crime. Yep, that's certainly not tangible evidence but it would've helped in making the jury give him the benefit of the doubt. And, Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson are good actors, otherwise they wouldn't have lasted this long in the industry. In the movie description, they mentioned the son's real-life name but skipped the sister's. She did a damn good job with expressions and acted much better than the son who kept an expressionless face that doesn't challenge acting skills.

The family house is really impressive. 'A girl got herself killed" makes it seem like the girl was responsible for her own death. The mother is very naive to think that her son's legal rights are not jeopardized. Liam looks really young. The poor man, when playing a father, always has to deal with a problematic kid. Isn't it usual for a policeman to stay with the suspect to prevent any contamination of evidence? When handling the evidence, the police do not wear rubber gloves. The actor portraying Jake conveys vulnerability well, but he seems a little too small, immature and soft for the role , Although Caroline believes that that the death was accidental, the proper description would probably be manslaughter.

Good film but portraying an awful scenario.People who destroy evidence, lie in a court, a lawyer like most who will back up any lie, manipulation and even try to throw out the truth when they have it just proves what an evil dishonest society we live in. If the truth had been told right from the start everything would and could have been so much better. That family put the girls family through hell for a second time. In my opinion the father should have got 10 years for destroying evidence and the son should have had the one year for the accidental manslaughter and the lawyer disbarred for deliberately trying to lie in court even when he had the facts. Our Society is sick !

I thought she sleepwalked through this whole thing. Either wasn't paid enough or didn't like playing second fiddle to Neeson or both. Her heart certainly wasn't in it, can't blame her with that terrible script and premise.

Oohh... It's based on a novel. Now everything makes sense. It's very common to get a feeling of incompleteness or lack of purpose of a movie when it's based on a novel and it doesn't manage to capture all the richness of the written language. The richness of a novel commonly lies on the inner world of the characters. But in the movies, we end up getting mostly the "and then this happens, and then this, and then that". Therefore the feeling that something is missing, that I got.

I liked this movie and the ending is so true either way. I really can understand both of them how they were dealing with it in different ways. That is a movie but shows how we deal with things in reality. Also it was not murder as people are commenting. It was an accident and the girl was really violent in the first place.

The film would have been more exciting if the father had accidentally been the perpetrator and only found out afterwards that it was his son's girlfriend. So he would have covered the tracks for himself and not for his son. Then he would have remained silent and accepted that his son would be suspected and accused. But I wasn't asked to write the script ... 😊

The ending of this film is ruined by putting images from forthcoming films up on the screen while the movie is still finishing and the actors are still speaking. Any emotional content is destroyed. DDF needs to have a more sympathetic and professional approach to its product.

Why is the family of the perpetrator always aghast that their family member must be held accountable. Someone's daughter is dead and mot comong back - accident or not. Probation after 5 years...not the reality for most. The whole time, the family was trying to get him off - just like the girl's mother said. Sad situation all around for sure. 😢 Lot of lessons in this movie.

I'm going to go against the grain here & say, it's about time that people valued the TRUTH more!! It's better to tell the truth, and face the consequences of his actions. Five years later, he will spend the rest of his life knowing that his parents taught him well, and he paid the price for his big mistake. He will feel proud of doing the right thing, and feel that inner peace that comes from rising above the temptation to lie & do wrong. Otherwise he will have to live the rest of his life blaming himself, his parents & everyone he can for the guilt that he will feel from getting away with it. "Guilt is to the mind (& spirit) what pain is to the body" Better believe it!! It's UNhealthy, because it depresses the mind, dulls the spirit, and rots the body. The truth is always right, and right is always good. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF GOOD. Good is healthy, empowering, & gives us the self respect & confidence that is priceless!! Simply put, I believe Good is Almighty!! Needless to say I absolutely LOVED this film & what it stood for🙏&✌!!
