Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 | Vasily Petrenko & the European Union Youth Orchestra (complete symphony)
Музыка
Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, played by the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) under the baton of Vasily Petrenko. In this August 4, 2019 concert recording from the Young Euro Classic festival in Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the outstanding virtuosity of this European youth orchestra is once again made evident. The young musicians display their mastery in a work even as demanding as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with great dynamism, and a tangible delight in performing.
‘Beethoven's Ninth as the symphony of Europe’ might easily have been the motto of this concert, in which Europe is represented in many aspects: Firstly as the European Union Youth Orchestra brings together the most talented young musicians from all of the EU’s member states; secondly because the Young Euro Classic festival - with young orchestras from all over the world - is a celebration of Europe’s classical music tradition; and thirdly since it is Beethoven's arrangement of Friedrich Schiller's poem Ode To Joy - in the fourth movement of the 9th Symphony - which in 1985 served as the template for the song that has been the European Union’s official anthem.
A chance for the audience to sing along to this European anthem is the shimmering climax of this Beethoven concert. In the concert hall as well as on the public square outside the building, the watching audiences passionately sing along to ‘Freude, schöner Götterfunken’. It’s a statue of Schiller - of all things - that looms in white marble above the singing crowds in front of the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt; a goosebump-inducing moment in which the utopia of a universal community of all people - brought to life by Schiller and set to music by Beethoven - becomes, for a moment, reality.
If you would like to experience Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a moving and atmospheric celebration of human ideals, this concert by the EUYO is for you.
Performers:
European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO)

Thank you to everyone for posting such heartfelt and motivating comments under a performance that will always have a special meaning to the European Union Youth Orchestra and the musicians that took part in it at the time! 🤗 It was a truly moving and unforgettable evening for everyone involved. One could feel an incredible sense of togetherness, of unity in diversity on a stage shared by young musicians coming from all EU countries, performing as one. A powerful performance that provides hope!

All displayed the same result of training, discipline, sonority and exuberance as we just saw from the European Youth Symphony. In SC it was the Greenville Youth Orchestra. In Atlanta it’s the Atlanta Youth Symphony. On KZread I’ve heard Youth Orchestras from Japan, Spain, France, Russia, Denmark and more. Please don’t short any country’s youth including the USA.

I love every note of music that Beethoven wrote But the greatest composer of all time,in my opinion, was Mozart not Beethoven. To see what I’m talking about listen to Mozart’s Soave sia il vento, from Cosi fan Tutte by Mozart. This sublime trio starts out simply as a wish of a safe voyage. But the second time they go through the lyrics of Lorenzo da Ponte, on the word desir (desire). Mozart changes the desire for a safe voyage into sexual desire. Mozart does this by simply adding a chord that you will feel tugs at your insides. Only Mozart could transform a wish for a safe voyage into sexual desire by adding a simple chord.

So amazing to hear Beethoven’9th Symphony played by young orchestras such as EUYO and West-Eastern Divan Orchestra! Two young ladies with flute and English horn are so talented!
Kindest regards to all Europeans from Vancouver Island. Great youth orchestra indeed.
Perfect - have seen a lot of performances of the 9th and there often seems to be a desire to rush the first 3 movements to get to the "ode to joy". It's a long symphony but every part of it is beautiful.
Heartening to know young people still care about classical music as these fine performers do. Wonderful performance and evidence, once again, of what a young country the United States is.

Nothing, not even profound deafness, could stop the force of music pouring out of Beethoven. The power of his music, when combined with the words of Schiller, and played by an orchestra the absolute epitome of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, stands as a constant reminder that together is better than apart. Fantastic performance by all involved, and especially by the EUYO.
