Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 Pathetique | Dresden Philharmonic & Marek Janowski

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as 'Pathétique', is one of the very great symphonies in the history of music. The famous work was performed by the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski in this concert at the Kulturpalast Dresden 2019.
(00:00) I. Adagio - Allegro non troppo
(17:32) II. Allegro con grazia
(24:54) III. allegro molto vivace
(33:49) IV. Finale: Adagio lamentoso
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) took just a few months to compose the Sixth Symphony and he conducted its premiere himself in St. Petersburg on October 28, 1893. Initially Tchaikovsky had called his Sixth 'A Programme Symphony', but after the premiere he unceremoniously gave it the epithet 'Pathetique' - and that is how it has gone down in history.
According to Tchaikovsky, the actual program is full of subjective emotions and is meant to remain a mystery. The 6th Symphony is characterized by a mixture of conventional symphonic structure and certain tragic features. Tragic, for example, is the key of B minor, which is considered somber, and the motif of the falling second, which runs through the entire work like a lament. The sweeping third movement, which seems like a triumphant finale, is surpassed by the fourth movement, which has always been interpreted as a requiem that Tchaikovsky wrote to himself in advance since the Russian composer died only a few days after the premiere of his Symphony No. 6, which received a restrained response.
The second performance of the Pathétique, on the other hand, was a great success, and to this day this frequently performed work is an audience favorite. Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony owes its fame not least to the yearning, melancholy second theme from the first movement (04:32).

From my point of view, Tchaikovsky's music speaks more than other classical music with a deep soul of being. A lot of people are wrong when they say it's aristocratic music; on the contrary, it is meta-human music of the connection of multiple and disparate beings and existences.

Tchaikovsky was such a remarkable composer -- he mastered so many genres within the world of classical music. He wrote an amazing opera, an amazing violin concerto, amazing music for ballet, and several amazing symphonies of which this is one. He must have been a remarkable man to know -- such great passion, such extraordinary tenderness; the vitality of his music is rarely matched, his inventiveness is a continuous source of delight. He moves from one unique moment to the next with effortless ease -- and always with an ear to what is most beautiful. Can you imagine music without Tchaikovsky??!! I certainly can't. I have listened to his exceptional creations for nearly five decades and am still moved by its loveliness after all these years. Finally, what was it about the Russian and Eastern European nations that produced a host of truly remarkable composers throughout the 19th century?? They also produced the best novelists of the era, imho. The funny thing is, of all the European nations of the 19th century, the most civilized, as far as orchestral music and fictional novels goes, would almost certainly be Russia. Yet she was never fully European. But she often excelled the Europeans at their own art. The Revolution destroyed all that beauty. Russian beauty of this type is now only known by the works its masters created.

This is "Symphony No.6 in B minor" rather than "Pathetique Symphony". I am not disappointed to this performance. Besides I do not disparage this performance. When I listened to this music, I might have an excessive preconception because of a title to " Pathetique" . This is slightly different that I expected. However, nevertheless, I listen to this performance repeatedly. Once again, again, once again…. Now I enjoy this performance heartily. Bravo! I send gland applause for this splendid performance.

I really enjoyed this performance. Wonderful sounding orchestra and steady, precise conducting from Maestro Janowski. Really passionate without being saccharine. I especially noticed how "together" the orchestra is in its attacks and dramatic outpourings. I especially appreciated the tam-tam player in the last movement, who made his single stroke count and didn't minimize it or cut it off but let it continue to reverberate into space as it expanded along with the orchestra.
