I was in junior high school when this came out. Made a trip to the library and asked for a Beethoven record to listen to. I'm so lucky the librarian chose this for me. More than once I fell asleep to the second movement. The record began a lifetime of listening to Gould, and was the gateway to being able to hear all the different "voices" in music, through Gould's unmatched technical proficiency.

I recently spent 22 days in Toronto and took the opportunity to visit Glenn Gould's grave at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. I also visited the Glenn Gould Foundation, where I was very well received by Mr. Brian Levine, Executive Director of the foundation. I told Mr. Levine that Gould's recording of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with Leopold Stokowski was unsurpassed. Glenn Gould has achieved immortality thanks to his priceless artistic recordings.

Side 2 was always my favourite on this album. The whole thing builds to this point. Gould plays a theme and the orchestra comes in full force playing it back. Then it goes quiet and he plays another more complicated extension of the theme only to have the orchestra blast it out again. It continues to go back and forth almost like it's intended to sound improvised. Remarkably playful stuff.

Perfect performers interpretation, even with the virtuosity coming out of the performer's mouth hahahuehue. But there are no variations on what Beethoven set out for this concert. No personalism of the interpreter. Perfect performance by the musicians. Perfect stamp and tuning. Great bass. Gould and Stokowski did a magnificent job. Listen in the headset and check out what I'm saying. Few productions, even from the best names, manage to deliver the ensemble of the work like this. I know many others are bothered by his humming, but I find it wonderful. It caused sound engineers a lot of problems at the time. To me it represents his complete complete commitment to the music. He tries to contain it, but he’s lost in a world that we can only view from afar through his genius.

Gould nailed this, but he didn't OWN it. He has to share the mastery of it with Perahia and Michelangeli. Gould's performance here is about on a par with his 1970 performance with Karel Ancerl conducting. Superb, even with the humming !

This one is slower than the 1970, and gives more time for the many rubato touches throughout the work....it's a one of a kind.

Claudio Arrau is my favourite in this, along with a few others. Stokowski & Gould we’re both very eccentric & did things “ their way”. This to me is below par with a lot of other great recordings

Still my favorite for this concerto. You want to get up and waltz to the rondo. Perfect tempo. Gould had asked Stokowski that this being another of the 25 Beethoven concertos in the Swann catalogue we will record this as either the fastest or slowest. He gave the choice to Stokowski and we have my favorite of the Beethoven 5 concertos for piano.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 - Glenn Gould, American Symphony Orchestra, Stokowski (1966/2015) 1 I. Allegro 00:00 ~ 2 II. Adagio un poco mosso 22:03 ~ 3 III. Rondo - Allegro ma non tanto 31:26 ~ With this performance, I enjoyed the real pleasure of KZread (music). The performance of the LP record era is wonderful, the sound quality has gloss. Glenn Gould's piano is very fashionable. And dundee Stokowski's tie is also nice. I appreciate your channel provider. This channel is wonderful. Thank you very much. The performance of the two people, Every time we change from "1966 → 2015 → 2018 (April 4)", That charm is up. It is a surprise. I have an image for the performers (two people) changed. And again, this channel has the highest level of recording. I can hear even the performer's "Hum voice". It is not unpleasant for me. The performer seems to be enjoyable. Funny, because it is more elegant than Sergiu Celibidache. Thank you very much.
