beers with jock (wake in fright)

'wake in fright' is my favorite movie. i wanted to pay tribute. this scene is one of my favorites. in this scene, john (gary bond) has just arrived in town for the evening, before he flies to sydney in the next morning. he meets jock crawford (chips rafferty) who is the local police chief. jock shows him a great amount of hospitality as he is an outsider to this small rural community and jack quickly learns how things go down in a tavern in 'the yabba'.
i had to acquire all the appropriate glassware. the first glass is called a 'middy' and is 285ml which is about 9.5oz. i got two of them from ebay for $27. expensive but the best deal i could find. they even had '285ml' etched into the bottom. the second glass is a 'nonick' pint, usually these are 20oz but mine is 16. not clear on what size they are on the film. the third glass was the hardest to distinguish. mine is a 12oz pilsner glass. i paid $1/ea for the nonick and pils glass at a thrift store, but it was 50% off day so i paid only 50 cents for each. i elected to go with paulner pils because i wanted something easy going. by all estimations they are drinking west end bitter in the film. RIP to chips rafferty and gary bond.

Back in the day in Oz, the bars had to close at 18:00 which is why you'd see patrons horsing drinks down like there's no tomorrow. Some bars would even pass around a "booze" hose so glasses could get filled quicker during the last hour. The "Six o'clock swill"..

Hey Eric, this one is fun and what a fitting tribute to your favorite movie. I love how you've synchronized your beer drinking with John! That must have taken a few takes (and beers) to get just right! 😂 Love that you removed your hat during the Tribute. Seems they love a good, fun, and friendly drinking night in the Yabba😅

Well it’s one continuous shot, I knew I had to get it right on the first time so I actually watched the scene many times and even took notes! I did a dry run where I even held an empty glass to my lips and edited it to see what it looked like. So that there is basically zero editing here, just the scene from the movie and a shot of me overlaid. And done! Thank you for watching 😊

On 27 May 1971, Cliff Rafferty collapsed and died of a heart attack at the age of 62, while walking down a Sydney street shortly after completing his role in Wake in Fright. Here's to JOCK CRAWFORD

i discussed the theme of alcohol abuse in 'strawdogs' in a video last year. someone recommended in the comments that i see 'wake in fright', because its really bad. i put it off. they recommended it again about a month ago. i foudn that it is on youtube (legally) with commercials for free. so i watched it. it changed my view of the world. it is terrifying in many ways. it disturbed me but i feel like it does have a weird sort of redemption in the end. i highly recommend it. side note: it looks like it only ever had a very limited DVD release in the USA. most of the copies on ebay are not region 1. i did find a copy eventually but paid a preimum for it. it was actually delivered yesterday but i am currently out of town, so ill grab it tomorrow. there are alot of silly movies about drinking and thats fine, becuase drinking can and should be fun. but as you know it can be very dark as well. i have two people i cared about who are dead from drinking. it can kill you. i have had times where i drank too much in the past. i think it is addressed here in a realistic way. i have never been to australia, much less the outback, but i have been to rural communities many times and i dont think where you are, this is where some serious drinking goes down. and it isnt pretty. i hope you seek it out and enjoy it, i think you will. after you watch it, youll see why i wanted to do a tribute. the film is so important to me now, i wanted to put my mark on it. i dont figure anyone has done this, it took a while to find the right glassware and i wanted to do it properly. i am proud of this video, as simple as it may be.
