Smile an everlasting smile
A smile can bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you down
'Cause that would bring a tear to me
This world has lost its glory
Let's start a brand new story now, my love
Right now, there'll be no other time
And I can show you how, my love
Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words and words are all I have
To take your heart away
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words and words are all I have
To take your heart away
It's only words and words are all I have
To take your heart away
It's only words and words are all I have
To take your heart away

I wonder how many people realize that Barry lost his voice as a child for two full years after being horribly burned. I believe that God gave them all back to him and he has been sharing them with the world ever since.

Years ago, Barry said he believed Frank Sinatra was the "consummate singer/entertainer"...the ladies just loved him, & there was hardly anyone who possessed the type of charisma Sinatra had. In my opinion, Barry easily wins any charismatic competition. Most of this audience was interacting with Barry & the simple, universal message contained in 'Words'.

Maybe it was rated as one of the best songs because SO many people have fond memories associated with it. It is a CLASSIC love song and though the Bee Gees wrote a lot of songs ABOUT love, few are love songs in the purest sense.

Another piece of trivia, Words is the first song the Bee Gees played in the U.S. on the Smothers Brothers comedy hour, it was quite a popular show back in the day but got cancelled because they were against the Vietnam war and would often mention it on the show so I guess the network felt they were unpatriotic

Couldn't really decide, what should be 1 or 4 and so on. I'm a fan since 1967 and so at first it's been lil hard for me, to go thru' their funky R&B orientated sound from 1975 to 1979. But as I got nearer to it, I found the same love for music generally, that's always been their force. And that wasn't their only reinvention, they always found the way to transmit to new decades. Gibb-Genius is the word. Check them out on their fantastic performance by receiving the Legend-Brit-Award. Nine minutes live-medley, leaving a enthuastic crowd.

There is a live version from 1979 "spirits tour" that is just killer. Also, This was the song they sang on their 1st TV appearance here in the states (on the smothers brothers comedy hour)--rare occurrence; in that one you see Robin playing the piano.

This song might be up there for me (though maybe not as high as fourth), not because it's a really stunning song, but because I simply like it...and can sing it, because it's one of the Gibb songs that stays low enough melodically...

The live performances of "Words" and many of their early songs are actually better than the studio versions, IMO, which is hard to say for most artists. Even Barry will admit those early albums were not recorded as well as their later albums. I'd say this song is Top 10 of my favorites if you include live versions - the 1979 version on the Spirits tour is amazing, followed by the 1997 One Night Only version.

Jay, thank you for doing this particular concert of "Words." I can see it as number 4 because it's a love song it has deep meaning and it happens to be my very favorite song. But like someone else said, my favorite Bee Gees song really depends on my mood and what's going on in my life and what just sounds perfect at that time. Thank you for relisting to "Words." It is a simple but great song.

ya the lyrics are for sure super good. Hmm ya top Bee Gees songs would def depend on the mood. I guess they kinda do all the genres so that makes it a little difficult. I suppose you could group your favorites into genres....like Favorite bee gees disco fav bee gees funk or fav bee gees ballad and that would work...but even then they kinda got a lot of songs.

"Words", my favorite Bee Gees song. It's been my favorite since I first heard it in the early 70's. They wrote many more popular songs afterwards. But I prefer Barry's normal voice. He sings this song with such feeling. I love the lyrics. And the melody. I am glad you gave this song another try. I know you are not much of a fan of their earlier songs. I always preferred their songs before disco. But I am starting to really enjoy their later music almost as much. Barry's falsetto is great. Fun to listen to. I think I appreciate their later music more now then I did when the songs first were released back in the late 70's and after.

You know there' s a lot of earlier content and I haven't been a huge fan but it's growing on me. The later stuff is probably not my favorite either. I think I'm still a huge lover of that late 70s period. but their music changes...like not a little bit but like a lot. I mean if you compared stayin alive to like Words that's like two complete worlds right there.

Thank you so much for this!!! Barry said that he had not intended the Greenfields project to be duets, or for him to even be heard. He was thinking it would be more like a traditional tribute album, but management and artists changed it to duets. Also, the artists choose the Bee Gees song that they wanted, and that he’s hoping this is only the first of 3 volumes. It’s interesting how different the Bee Gees’ live performances of certain songs through the decades can be, and especially Words. You’ve reacted to late 60’s and late 80’s.... 1979 is also available and AWESOME... and includes a sweet cameo of Linda and Stephen watching. Highly recommend for a reaction!!!!! There’s a video of Barry and Dolly about the making of their duet version, and she jokingly immitates his vibrato, so be sure to pay special attention to his use of vibrato if you do another Words reaction:)

Infact Elvis Presley also made a version of this song. However that version is in my opinion too rushed. I know I will get a lot of Elvis fans on my back for that statement, but that is just my feeling after being growing up with the original. There is no doubt that Elvis has the voice but if he had taken down a step or two it might even had been better than the original. Boyzones version that went number 1 is great and has a more mainstream sound to it. Ronan Keating sings it great. Did you know the brothers wrote a song for Ronan that he recorded with the brothers as backing but never released himself. The bee gees released that version on their compilation album "Love Songs" the UK/Japn special edition. The song is called "Lovers And Friends" and is really worth a listen.
