Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

They depended on the kindness of the inhabitants to survive and survive we did. This MacDougall sailed aboard her from Campbelltown, Scotland. I too, descend from him. There is a monument in PEI that commemorates this history. That's as far back as I have traced him. There still is a head of the MacDougall clan in Scotland. I believe her name is Margaret.

Actually got to meet the Chief of Clan Ranald AND the High Chiefs, Lord MacDonald of MacDonald when we were in Scotland in 2014 for the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn. Whole area reminded me of home - Cape Breton that is - though not like Cape Breton or Nova Scotia exactly by any means, but I could see why many place names were repeated here. And I saw why they left, they were the wrong politics, wrong religion, wrong class, they had to try something new and so they did. Got on a boat and left it to God's will.

Somerled's life is still open to several interpretations - Gaelic hero liberating his native land from foreign oppressors (an early William Wallace ?) or Norse-Gael warlord fighting other Norse-Gael warlords to carve out a slice of territory for himself, all the time trying to keep the Kings of Scotland and Norway at arms length. However DNA testing of his ancestors (mainly clan chiefs) show that his paternal line was from Norway - so either the records are wrong, the DNA tests are wrong, or Somerled's mum needs to make an appearance on the Jeremy Kyle Show.

Somerled's descendants continued to pay tribute to the King of Norway and become involved in Norwegian politics (e.g. his grandson Óspakr-Hákon). They even teamed up with the King of Norway when he went on a punitive raid of the Isles in 1230.

@@jmartin0805 Somerled's descendants and the Crovan Dynasty (descendants include clan MacLeod) were ruling different parts of the Isles and Argyle. Both paid tribute to Norway for the lands that they held. In the 1240s and 1250s the MacDougalls (Somerled descendants) were actively supporting the King of Norway against Scottish moves into Argyle. However they switched sides after the battle of Largs and attacked the Norwegian fleet. The warlords ruling the isles were effectively semi-independent under Norway, which continued after the Scottish takeover. Their semi-independence lasted until 1493 when the last MacDonald (descended from Somerled) Lord of the Isles was removed by the King of Scots.

I am really enjoying all of your stories and learning so much Thank you ! We are in America and know from both DNA and a diary and lots of research by several family members, but most of all from my brother, Dave Henderson. I used to tease my grand dad that as a Scot by ancestry, he was probably part Norse too. He would say “ I am not”! Now we know I was actually right. We are Pict/Scot/ Norse on his side and English/Welsh/Dane on his wife’s, my grandmother’s side and Norwegian on our Mom’s side, with a 25,000 year old connection through Mom’s mother’s Norse line in Southern Norway! And Northern Norse from Mom’s Dad’s side. I had always wondered how my Norwegian grandmother got her black hair and violet blue eyes. Now I know! We grew up on stories of our Scots historical background and it is great to finally be able to put the real history in. That basket of knowledge too. Thank you so very much, Kathy H. Bray

McFadyean any digging I have done my lot came fae Mull, Iona area the story of how the clan McFadyean was meant to have lost Lochbuie to the clan McLean is funny........."The McFadyens are a very old tribe. They were the first sept to join the Maclaines, although under dubious circumstances. When Hector Mclaine went to claim the lands given to him by the MacDonalds, he found the lands already under the possession of the McFadyens. For mutual protection (from various raiders and neighbouring tribes), the Chief granted him permission to build a fortress at the head of Loch Buie. After the castle was completed, Hector climbed to top and shot an arrow through a bone that the McFadyen Chief was eating on the ground below. Not being foolish, the McFadyen Chief removed himself from the scene. Whether Maclaine was aiming the bone or at McFadyen, and missed, is a matter of speculation (and perspective).

I married a McLean. Not sure about Gladstone, but I've always wondered where they got Arthur Gladstone Flint's middle name. Mother's maiden names were VERY often used as a middle name in my family tree. That's why we've been passing down the name Stuart/Stewart!

Were they vassals, or really independent? Were they Norwegian, Scottish, or Irish? It simply doesn't fit into a neat category. A little like the 'Burgundian State' of the 14th and 15th centuries.
