Becoming a Thru Hiker - Arizona Trail ep.1

I set out to walk across Arizona, 800 miles through the heat, desert, cactus, burning sun, with all sorts of fun creatures to contend with, only carrying a small backpack of supplies. The trail begins at the Mexico border and travels all the way up to Utah, going up and over some of the biggest mountains in the state. Mt Lemmon, Mica, the San Francisco Peaks, traversing down into the Grand Canyon, and back up the other side on the Kaibab Trail. It's been more than a year since I did a long distance thru hike like this, since walking 1,100 miles on the Florida trail in the winter of 2020. I hope my body holds up, I hope I don't develop any hiking injuries. I hope the sun and heat isn't so bad, though I am starting much later in the season than most other AZT thru hikers. At least I won't have much snow to walk through. Water however will be a major problem in the desert.
I have an ultralight pack, nearly super ultralight. Carrying 7lbs worth of backpacking gear, a lot of which is camera equipment to film these hikes. I feel this UL gear is enough to keep me comfortable, happy, and safe... but you really don't know how things will work until you're out in the wilderness with no safe exit plan. Some of the gear I'm using consists of an Enlightened Equipment Enigma 30*F which is an ultralight quilt. An EE Torrid Pullover synthetic jacket. A Zpacks 7x9 tarp as my only shelter. A small Palantepacks UL backpack. And a Sunday Afternoon Sunhat. Beyond that you can check out my hiking gear listed below!!
In this first part of the trail we start at Coronado National Memorial at the Mexico Border, hike up to Miller Peak, go through the town of Patagonia, hike past Mt Wrightson, see a lot of big cactus, deal with dehydration and extreme heat, and still push 30 or more miles everyday. Fastpacking maybe, but certainly not a speed record or Fastest Known Time. Just hiking the way I like to hike. Oh yeah, I also get stung by a scorpion! It's been great out here walking across Arizona!
During this trip I unfortunately broke the fancy new camera lens I had bought to better document this hike and those I take in the future. For those interested I have made paintings to help replace it! All of these are original, and it all goes back to making these videos better. Thanks for checking out my artwork!

meh, scorpions are not anything to worry about. they are fairly harmless unless you sit there and mess with them and agrivate them. they offer no danger in just regular circumstances.

That looks like a special hike. And all by yourself. Although I am not a hiker, I would love to experience it. Arizona seems to be quite beautiful and rough. Sorry about your new camara.

Really beautiful, man! Beautiful photography, great commentary. Some of the skies made me want to cry, lol, (I NEED to find a way to make more miles so that I can do some of these trails)! Watched the latest Q&A w/Darwin (loved) and not that you asked, but a shoe recommendation for really wide feet (mine!) are topo's. Not sure if you've tried, but the MTN Racers from last year are amazeballs (imo). Thanks for getting my mind off of everyday life ish and out on the trail! Happy hiking!

Awesome jupe. I wonder if it’s common to hike 6-10am, pause for heat, then go again 6-10pm. Two a days, like football practice before school starts in August.

Thanks for closing the gates behind you. I don’t especially enjoy cow pies on my trail, but the ranchers have a right to be there too, and wandering cattle are a headache for them.

Sure are a lot of ranchers! Given the hikers rely on them currently for so much water I wouldn't want to anger them. Sharing the space as best we can

Thanks again for sharing the trip and great video content and quality. I'm learning and hope to be at your level one day. I have a Panasonic G85 and wondered how you liked the 14-42 lens for vloggoing on trail? Hope this wasn't the lens that broke. I'm trying to reduce camera size and a lens like this would be nice reduction from my kit zoom. I'm wondering if the power zoom is worth the extra and if an comparable Olympus or other non-power I'll like better on trail. Thanks

I really did like the 14-42 but you definitely don't want to drop it on it's face :/ For the price and incredibly low weight it is very nice. The quality is good as you can see in these videos. The only thing I didn't so much care for was the power zoom and power focus technology. Having the manual rings on other lenses to turn to pull focus is nice, and I think more accurate. These weren't quite as accurate. Still, for the weight and the price it really is hard to beat and you have to ask yourself, how heavy of a lens do you really want/need to be carrying. What is your overall goal. As others have said, story is what matters
