Arizona Trail Day 1 - It's Cold Alright

Let's go for a little walk. Today I start the Arizona Trail and fool myself into believing that starting from the Visitors Center is a good idea. Please join me as I start a new adventure!

I hope you enjoy it! I loved the AZT. It was such a wild experience compared to other trails and it was amazingly beautiful. I had a great time out there and Tina and I have discussed doing it sobo for her to experience it as well.

Awesome, thanks for documenting your journey! Can't wait to catch up with your posts. At 1:12 for the Ocotillo plant you pointed out, your first pronunciation is correct - not the second pronunciation. (Oh-co-tee-yo, not Ah-cah-till-oh) No matter how some in Arizona mispronounce on Spanish words. Same type of Spanish pronunciation with Saguaro cacti, once you're lower in elevation in the Sonoran Desert...

Jay- I did 300 miles on the Arizona trail as a warm before we started the PCT in 2018. Remember it being cold and having it snow when I hit Patagonia, but absolutely beautiful. Good luck! Ruffles

Great to see you starting! I haven't watched any videos of this trail since I've been so obsessed with my PCT Prep. Looking forward to watching your journey. Glad to know the S21 has good mic quality. I just upgraded. Going bare bones for vlogging with just my phone.

Glad to see you're out and going - I'll be following along. You mentioned agave and yucca flower spikes. Agaves only flower once and then the plant dies. Yucca will flower and stay alive to bloom again. The agave you showed around 5:00 was in the process of dying. The spikes then fall over and hopefully each flower will dispense seeds where it fell - under favorable conditions, you'll then get a line of young agave plants along the line that the flower stalk fell.

I've seen plenty of people get by with the water bladders, but I'm not willing to chance it. Same thing with air mattresses. I like them, but am 150% sure I'll pop it.

Now I have 2 videos to watch while eating my 4 course dinners in my nice, warm apartment before getting into the nice, soft, warm bed.... I bet you're freezing your butt off in that single wall tent Jay!! Good grief!!! Your mic is doing pretty good in the wind you're getting so keep on keeping on Jay!! I bet you're glad you brought that shemagh with you!!! They are worth their weight in gold in hot OR cold weather, eh?

Hey Jay I'm starting to follow your adventures on the AZT while I'm watching your adventures on the AT2022, at about 18:53, there's a video shot of a rock that looks like a face, it looks like an ancient monument of some sort, also how did you get the water stash there? I noticed you had some water stash and some bushes did someone leave that water for you? Also I'm trying to find the link we discussed the gear you using for the AZT, I noticed that some of the trails were covered in snow, would you recommend microspikes?

  • @JayWandersOut

A few days prior I drove to the parking lot and hiked up the mountain with a bunch of water and stashed them myself. After the hike I just camped in my car in the nearby national forest then drove to Phoenix the next morning to drop off the car. I carried microspikes after Roosevelt Lake but honestly didn't think I needed them. It's entirely luck though. Spikes are good for frozen snow and ice but I had a lot of slushy snow. You may or may not need them, again all just a matter of luck. Often with slushy snow if enough people walk in it the pressure compacts it to sort of ice but there was hardly anybody near me hiking. For the slushy stuff waterproof socks definitely helped way more! Not fun stepping in near freezing puddles constantly all day.

No micro spikes? Interesting no ice in Smartwater bottle, and bag frozen. You going to put the bladder in your sleeping bag 🥶? I would be glad to hear later if you like the Enlightened Equipment Jacket relative to comfort, it should be a lot better to sweat 💦 in, I have had my Mountain Hardware down flatten on me from perspiration. Nice views up there. I do hear more ambient sounds with that mic. we’ll see how you like it up there tonight , burr.

I'd say other than Roosevelt Lake you're really fine. It's almost mid way and the store is tiny and expensive. They do charge for packages though.
