Becoming a Global Citizen. | Tanya Finnie | TEDxByford
The next few years are going to be filled with challenges and tough travels, and we face a real risk of turning back time. The pandemic has disproportionately affected society, but together we can build stronger communities. Tanya Finnie is a global cultural strategist, professional speaker, business owner, mother and wife. Tanya has valuable global experience from having worked all across Africa, various European countries, shorter stints on all the other continents and is now proudly based in Perth, Western Australia. She works with middle managers to executives to grow situational awareness and self-awareness, reduce anxiety and stress, defuse conflict or simply build stronger collaborative teams. Her passion is to leverage diversity to build a more inclusive world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. There is something so beautiful and soulful when learning about others and seeing how differently people can do and celebrate - makes for a much more interesting life!

Thanks. I’ve done it many times. It’s hard, but also exciting. I think it may get harder the older and more established you get.
Wonderful way to travel, stay for a bit, see what connects and leave or stay!

I suspect in our new way of working, our workforce has become much more global with opportunities to walk in various different places for extended times. The future of work is changing in front of our eyes.
Thanks for the inspiration Tanya. I'm adding global citizen to my resume.

Good for you Tanya, must be nice to have these kinds of experiences

Now that travel restrictions have been eased we can look forward to running with the bulls.
Fabulous! I love this. All done, Tanya.
Personal accountability and education is the only way we move forward.
Some people have never even thought about the other countries that exist or how they could benefit by experiencing some of those cultures
Thank you Tanya! This is so brilliantly put together and so helpful!

It's definitely time that personal accountability came into play - we have access to so much to help ourselves become more educated and understanding. Thank you for this Tanya!

Imagine what the world could look like if we all step up just a tiny bit more. If we become upstanders, rather than bystanders.
Love this Tanya
it was pretty wild to see how much people changed during the pandemic and for a moment i almost thought it would be for the betterment of humanity but nope, we went straight back to our survival behaviours.

So sad, but unfortunately true. There were some hero's amongst us, but as you say most of us went back to the comfortable Systems 1 thinking.
I have never heard of a cultural strategist, I think the USA needs a few of these.
Great talk Tanya and couldn't agree more about perspective - it is everything and that's why it's so important to actually spend time immersing yourself in different cultures to truly understand, not just observe them like a curiosity.

the suggestion that the western world is more individualistic is true, I think, and it also might help explain why the western world has experienced so much conflict during the pandemic

The ideal - as soon as we started going into lock downs I was curious what the shift would be, would be become more understanding or more segregated? I'm not entirely hopeful but I did find comfort in seeing two opposing sides of the political spectrum come together in agreeance, even if what they were agreeing on was detrimental to the majority. .
@redheadcommunicationstanya9678

Interesting thought. Do you think we became more segregated or understanding as a direct result of COVID?

This is true for many, however, there are some who travel and actually decrease their Cultural intelligence. These are the people who still go about their own way and don't try the new food, explore the new language and customs etc.
Very surprised to see her reference Maslows hierarchy of human needs - keep in mind that was established nearly 80 years ago. We've come a long way.

We certainly have Lucas! I hope to have given a more modern spin on this well-known, but old hierarchy as you quite rightly pointed out.
It must be nice to experience a new country that welcomes you openly instead of discriminating.
Not all of us have the resources to pick up stakes and go walkabout in the name of adventure and expanding our perspective. Most have mortgages, energy and household bills to pay and children to feed, but that's for the idea.

The beauty of technology is that you can go walk about anywhere in the worls, right from your lounge room or local library.

I'm really curious as to how the eucalyptus trees represent freedom for gold mine workers. I get the association between the trees and the mines but it's not like they could just take the gold out and keep it for themselves is it?
@redheadcommunicationstanya9678
Жыл бұрын
The eucalyptus trees were by far the safest wood to keep the dangerous mine shafts up, due to the way they wind to the top when growing and are stronger. The opportunity to work in mines and earn to provide gave them hope and thus a sense of freedom.
The story of the Uber driver at the 11:22 mark made me angry at his racism.
Who knew Eucalyptus trees were used in mine shafts?

A great question to ponder @Jon Rhome. I have no doubts you could be a global citizen from your armchair, yet there are also those who have no interest or motivation to explore other places and culture, whether it is in person or form their armchairs.

Thank Delilah. Good point. It was actually quite a buzz. More peaceful and busy than I imagined. I slept on someone's floor on a mattress and often went to the local shebeen (bar) for a social, drink and feed. The people were incredibly hospitable and very protective of me. Many families shared a public tap for their only drinking/washing water.
What a twisting winding story. A bit like life.
It's okay, our universe has a funny way of balancing things I think. Soon enough the only choice we will have is to be a global citizen, anything less and you won't survive!
Maybe it's her accent but I'm finding it really difficult to differentiate the tones? I'm so interested in what she's saying but I can't tell what's a question or the end of one sentence and the start of the other. Feels like her pacing is off or something. Just me?
I could not agree more with what Tanya is saying, There's no excuse in this day and age to not be cultured and embrace multi-culturalism

Thanks, @ekimo. It was not as scary as many may imagine. The people I stayed with were incredible and I mostly felt safe. There was an incident one night with some shooting going on, but even then there was a sense of community between everyone in the house.

The beuty of being a global citizen is you do not need to leave your street! The world and other cultures can be explored form your lounge through various differtn ways. Being a gloabl citizen is not as much about travel as it is about, having respect for others through an understadnign of different viewpoints.
