Become Authentic - A Guided Photography Composition Walk - Canon R5

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

During this video I capture some of my best photographs, and the secret is surprisingly simple. I let go of all pressure and expectations. Free your creative energy from judgement and restrictions. We often box ourselves in without even realizing it. Over the past 12 months, I've been vlogging on KZread more consistently, but there's a catch. Every trip feels like it must be filmed. Filming consumes time and energy, eating into the precious free moments I have in the evenings. Don't get me wrong, I love creating, but where do you draw the line when creation invades the limited time meant for yourself? When planning videos I feel the pressure to nail every shot and produce favorable images. I frequently cut out b-roll and hide compositions that might make me seem less skilled. But what do people truly learn if you overly control your content? Being open and authentic has unlocked new perspectives and improved my photography without me even realizing it. I am now more conscious and deliberate in the field, thinking more deeply about each shot because it's all being captured in one take. Join me next week for my next first-person vlog as I explore the enchanting Bluebells in Wales.

    What I like is that you show what your thought process is when scoping out compositions...what I really loved is when you pointed out why a certain composition would not work instead just showing what did work. It's important to see why something may not work...I appreciate that.

    A good ramble through the woods is a way to rejuvenate the soul. I have walking issues and have to use a rollator for long walks and a hiking staff for shorter ones but I still feel the call of the woods and enjoy every minute I can spend there. ‼ THANKS ‼for your wonderful channel that is so positive and delightful. You encourage me to get out there and find those wonderful present images in the woods. Take care! Peace be with you! Earl J.

    OH thank you so much for you kind comment and encouragement! It really does make the difference, yes this style has been made up on this walk in sheer desperation to keep doing photography and to keep filming and stay consistent for you guys and I am so glad it's been well received, I was slightly worried everyone would unsubscribe from me! But it seems people get it, the b-roll style videos will be back again soon. Not to worry about the donation, its the thought that counts. Thank you for the support :)

    I think you are on to something with this honest walking conversation thru your thoughts and what you're seeing. I always thought myself that KZread videos were suppose to be highly edited with B-rolls and angles for it to work, or at least that is what it seems to be the way to do it which kept me from making videos, but this walk-and-talk to the camera is remenicent to my experiences growing up learning photography as I with my friends or siblings would wonder in parks with our cameras having honest conversations and sharing what we are seeing and how we would shoot certain compositions we come by, only difference we could share our results until we hit the darkroom. I thoroughly enjoyed this video for it's realism and honesty and bringing me back to those moments just like this as a young student of photography. As far as photo ruts, it is time and energy for me but even then I tend to be picky which is not a good thing. I need to just let lose and let the chips fall where they may, just as I did years before. When I do that I find I surprise myself with the images I stumble upon and make. Wonderful video Suzannah, and cheers to your little one for being a fun walking companion.

    Yes me too, it's actually quite a lot of work, pressure and mental strain. Especially when you have a little one which is teething at the moment! I think this approach will enable me to keep getting out to do photography and keep sharing the experience with others in a more open and positive way. I have seen so many more compositions watching the footage back and reading the comments. What you said about it relating to your own memories with your siblings and friends is exactly why I create videos such as this. I too have fallen into that trap and I think it happens the older you get and the more experienced you become with your photography. The novelty of images wears off, you see things and the initial excitements of capturing your first flower or your first butterfly pass and then it takes a little more effort and attention to the keep the interest and the spark alive. Thanks for watching and commenting, its really appreciated

    What a lovely forest .Nice vlog as always with some nice pictures. I did miss your way with creative stories which has helped me in a little way on a book I'm writing. I love how you take your son out I used to do that when my daughter was young many years ago now but it will be of major benefit to him. 5 or 6 months ago I was sitting on a bench on a hill overlooking the trees for life visitor centre near loch Ness with my daughter having a catch up enjoying the scenery and she turned to me and said that all the times we spent in nature when she was young was so much appreciated and beneficial to making her the person she is today. This touched my heart so much in many ways....I suppose this vlog reminded me how quickly children grow so treasure every moment....bb

    Interesting but really nice one Suzannah! And glad you recovered. The words at the end are really meaningful. I must say while it's more 'obvious' to follow the well-known photographers on YT (and I do follow some of them), for me your channel brings balance with an always down-to-earth approach and authenticity, I really appreciate that. Regarding the compositions/photos: I noticed that the photos you are showing in this video seem to have a different white balance from the video footage, much more yellowish. I wonder if that a deliberate choice you made? For me I always strive for getting the colors separated as much as possible (yellow, orange, different greens) in my shots and when processing (of course that is personal...!). For me woodland walks are a way to be with my own thoughts and enjoy nature in all the grand and little things. Beinga able to photograph it is also my way to enjoy it and appreciate everything. If fitness would allow I would walk all day but that's not doable for me. Some extra compositions I noticed: 3:09/3:17 - 5:16 (behind you) - 8:14 (probably my favorite). Keep up the nice work (-;

    Yes slowly getting there, I haven't mentioned my back issues so much as I thought people wouldn't really want to know but actually I think people appreciate content they can relate to. Oh that's super kind of you, I do try to be myself as best I can without coming across to robotic! That is very useful to know, the OSMO pocket has a more blue white balance and on top of that I tend to add more warmth through choice but its very good to hear your perspective. Yes I agree, its the same for me too. Fitness and mobility is a huge factor in opening up photography. I think this is why I stay local on shorter walks now as I can't go as far at the moment. Thanks for the feedback, I checked the times you stamped and yes there were some interesting shots to be had there! Thank you, cheers for you continued support

    Hi Ash, Yes it was rather muddy. No that would be a challenge, but places like this have some good access on the main pathways which are level and have easy access. I guess for you its the challenge of getting to places sun as this which must take a lot of research and planning which I can imagine being a huge blocker in creative flow. Keep getting out where you can, even if it's a challenge most days 🙏

    A nice watch... lovely woodland and although I am not a lover of vergreens as asuch there was a nice mixture in this woodland of desiduous also... I was keeping my fingers crossed for you carrying the toddler as that muddy can (especially downhill) can be a bit harzardous - I slipped a little while aho and put my hand down to stop my fall and my wrist took the full weight of my me as I went down. As you was talking abut not getting out I am currently restricted from driving after a mini stroke so have not managed to do any real photography for a while. Cinematic B Roll is not always the story - I watch quite a few hikers who do the "1st person view" and it works fine I say. Just keep doing what your doing. atb Alan

    Yes it is a beautiful woodland with a lot of variety, I really enjoy shooting here as it gets a variety of conditions. Yes I was very carful when walking, I have some decent walking boots with good grip! Looking forwards to the warmer months when sludge is less of a navigation risk. Your experience of slipping is super useful to know, I shall go careful from now on. I think you'r not alone and a lot of people here have different restrictions which affect them in various ways, hopefully someone will see your comment and relate. Have you tried to get around the restriction of driving? I find a blocker like that can really affect ease of trip and focus. I'm glad you like it, I think for the short term is it is a style I will adopt until things settle with my son's sleep pattern. The full videos will be back soon :)

    I think you may have missed an alignment rather than a composition at 1:07, the far Y tree sat perfectly to fill the gap between the connected trees from the osmo footage and gives you a nice group of 3 Y trees in frame. I have difficulties with photography currently, I'm suffering with severe anhedonia and emotional numbness which affects my motivation and enjoyment a lot as well as the processing too, which I basically have stopped because how I was feeling as I took the shot would influence how I processed it and now I can't feel it makes it difficult to connect with the shot as I used to. I still take photos as I can't help but see them as we photographers have trained ourselves, it's almost a compulsion to capture it as I don't want to miss something and hopefully when my head is in a better place I can come back to them. Don't know how the processing will go as I won't have a feeling to work from when I took it but I just want any sort of feeling and passion to return, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

  • @SuzannahMary

    Wonderful spot, I only saw this looking back to the time stamp you mentioned. This is why I think it's so good to share the raw footage of the walk from my perspective because you will see things in a different way or catch a glimpse of a composition I might not have considered. It will really help me and others fine tune their composition eye for sure. I can relate, it can be really challenging finding the right headspace to capture images or even process them. I have periods of taking lots of photos through sheer fear of missing a shot, only for it to sit on the SD card for weeks at a time so you are not alone there. Hang in there, your flare will return and take the pressure off yourself. Can you image a time you enjoyed seeing your images to the end result? If you had that passion before you can find it again, sometimes we take a mental break to rest and it might make all the difference in the long run.

    @SuzannahMary Sometimes, you can't help but spot compositions in the videos you watch, even in b-roll sometimes. You think I wonder if they saw it too, I'm sure you've seen some great shots get noticed during editing, but it's too late then. 😅 But what you spot is going to be personal to your style and taste so a missed composition to one person is not even contemplated by another. I think it's a nice idea to have your viewers tell you what they saw as a composition during your video, as it allows both you and your subscribers to contribute as a community and everyone learns. I have about 500 photos sitting on my X100V and about 1000 on my Z6ii cards, a couple of times in the last few years I've had to dump them on the SSD and make clear the card without even thinking of editing. In times I've been better a small amount of editing has been done but the time to burnout is much shorter when your head isn't there. One of the genres of photography I do is rail and I know I haven't really touched that since 2017 even though I still take rail photos from time to time. One of the things my psychiatrist said to me was to push myself out of my comfort zone and he commented about how I became more enthusiastic when I was talking about photography (and my dogs) so my brainstorm was pushing myself + photography + talking = KZread channel , so hopefully I'll start (a new) one soon and overcome the motivation and enjoyment issues and push my introvert self into it.
