I haven't been able to draw the way l used to because of my hand tremors, but now you've inspired me to try this style of art, keep up the phenomenal work.

Ayy I’m your 100th like I hope you can find a style that works for you and I’m sure it’s hard to look at a positive in a situation that most would see as a negative but maybe your hand tremors will make you create beautiful art that you may not have created before
His drawings almost resemble out of focus photos that capture a small moment in the person's life..a fleeting moment..unbelievably awesome artist!!
"I don't erase mistakes" - true art🙌🏽💯

Italian masters of the Renaissance obliged their students not to erase their ‘ pentimenti ‘, ie their mistakes because they were their first impulse at depicting reality.
Honestly, I was mesmerized watching this piece take shape and it has inspired me to be less afraid of using charcoal which I have always found intimidating in my beginning to take up drawing. I have, so far, being trying for realism and avoiding drawing from inspiration; however, using the technique you demonstrated here, I can set myself free to just have fun and stop trying to be so tied to the reference. Thank you.

Same here. I got into charcoal because I felt limited by pencil sketching after many years. It was a disaster. There were many simple techniques that I simply wasn't aware of as presented here.
Face out of chaos. You help me discover a way to draw my daughter's face. A turbulent relationship. I now see how to capture all those emotions and still have the intimate connection with her through the drawing by using your technique. Thank you.
Absolute, sheer genius on so many levels! As an artist and as a teacher. I am an advanced abstract artist looking to delve into some realistic art. However, every time I try, I fail. And that’s fine, obviously, but it’s nice to finally see something that so clearly mixes the two, and so clearly explains with both academic and casual language what the goal is, what the process is, and the result. You have a gift as an instructor, motivator and artist and I thank you for sharing it with us.

I love how he points out that he doesn't want to recreate the reference piece and so long as its anatomically sound he's happy with that. He has a point because that image already exists in the world so what would be the point of reproducing a perfect copy of it.

I used to enjoy portraiture working with a more realistic approach but with the chemotherapy making me feel very sick and wears me out very often so after watching this I am very intrigued. I could create an expressive charcoal portrait within 20 minutes without wearing myself out. Thank you so much for sharing this, this may be just the thing to bring back my passion for drawing again. 😊
Although I digital paint, I kind of live by this. I like seeing the face come out of the mess instead of defining the lines so perfectly and painting into them.
wow !! THIS IS 1 OF THOSE VIDEOS THAT I WATCH COMPLETELY + U CHANGED MY PERSPECTIVE ON CHARCOAL AND TIME MANAGEMENT. WOW NEW REVELATIONS!!!👍👍
I love the way you walk through the process in an explanatory way that makes sense
This is So amazing! Like a sculptor finding the statue in the stone. You have married the kinetic energy with classic beauty. The texture, the line, the soft beauty of the image. This is a direction I have been wrestling with since I was young but I never understood how I might be able to marry the two until I saw this. You are a genius. I can't thank you enough for this demonstration.
Incredible. I love your philosophy when it comes to your art. I like charcoal art but I'm so stringent on the details and seeing you create this was freeing in a way. Makes me feel like I've been using the medium wrong.
It is interesting, inspiring, and very enjoyable watching these charcoal drawings come to life out of nothing. You are watching what looks like a brunch of scribbling and muddy dark spots but before you realize it an amazing abstract image appears. I want to start practicing this technique.
You are amazing!! I really enjoy watching the whole process and the end result is just breathtaking. Congrats!
The pace at which you work perfectly expresses your enthusiasm for your craft, it's infectious. Great work and vid!
Love love love this technique.Having such fun even though I have a long way to go Always loved semi abstract work.Thank you.
Outstanding!!! Love your technique. Awesome to hear your thought process as you draw. Thank you
I just ordered two of your wonderful master pieces and I want to know what is the best way to frame them so they can be hung up so everyone can enjoy them thanks in advance for your help

Really enjoyed this. I’ve recently started drawing again after 31 years and I’ve stumbled upon a similar approach to your good self. Excellent work and very inspiring, thank you.
I love this, and this is my absolute favorite way to draw… Beautiful expressive messy and impulsive! Wonderful inspiration
I love the way you work! When I don't know what I want to draw I often just create some chaos and something always shows up out of it. Great video thanks for sharing
I have been working for years with oil and acrylics, and after some discussion with a fellow artist, we have been doing a great deal of graphite drawings and I have once again been reminded of the importance of drawing. Recently I began playing around with charcoal on canvas as a lay in sketch before painting, only to realize that I love the idea of simply doing the entire work in charcoal. This video has reaffirmed that, and I want to thank you for this tutorial. Love the way you approach a drawing with reckless abandon, something that I have always tried to do as it gives way to such freedom and discovery. I look forward to more of your content, and have subscribed to your channel. Cheers.
Absolutely brilliant. Inspiring, gripping imagery. This is how it’s done!
Loved the drawing, it came out amazing. Makes me miss charcoal. It's such a fun medium. I think the word you were looking for was implied. You did a fantastic job and watching her come to life was super enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
You’ve just completely blown my mind with this. Absolutely stunning
I love the feel of this piece, you’ve got a great style of drawing, needless to say I love it.
Thank you for your ease of communicating your approach. I feel like this style of drawing was a large amount of technique I was missing from the images I've created in the past. Let the light pick areas to expose or emphasize...and as you said the brain fills in the rest. I like the thought of raising audience participation while raising your own skill level. Thank you.
I've only recently discovered your work, and I'm completely fascinated by your technique, I absolutely love it.
Your sketching/drawing in itself is Art. It's like you are making visible what was already there ... Beauty out of Chaos. Awesome!
Th8s is the magic u so often try to describe to people!! I'm SO GLAD that someone captured the process on video
The chaos part at the beginning is better than anything I've ever attempted to draw.
This is beautiful. The explanation, process everything. Thank you for your generosity
I love how physical this medium is. This looks very fun.
Thanks for sharing what you do, I haven't drawn since I was a teen because of crippling perfectionism in my drawings making it more stressful than fun to do art for me. But here in my 30s after watching your work I've been making a chaotic mess on my digital canvases and then playing around with the eraser and brush back and forth, and it's been so cathartic, truly. I actually enjoy doing these, and just for myself really which is something I couldn't say with my art before. There's something emotionally healing and meditative with this process, can't thank you enough for sharing because the end product alone looks hard to reach but watching you do it gave me confidence to try
this was so breathtaking to watch. the process itself is art itself
Thank you very much for that great tutorial! I am a beginner, but this way is a very good one for me to start my journey in drawing. No frustations, but fun and experience step by step, piece by piece. Thank you also for your good explanations!
Great style, concept, design,,,one of the best presentation videos…well articulated…wonderful results…authentic art…thank you…

Pretty stunning. The balance between chaos and order is strong.
I drew with charcoal for the first time in my class a month ago, and didn’t enjoy it at all. my teacher said charcoal should be more experimental, but i’m not very good at smudging and didn’t go far. this really has inspired me to try again! loved watching and listening to the process. thanks so much for the video
So far the most precise and the most useful tutorial on this topic. Awesome artwork!

I've just come across your channel, Beautiful charcoal portrait Josh! I Love your methodology and your style, very talented!
What a genius ! Cultivating his own competition !
Love the artwork entirely. I am amazed how charcoal was used in this very beautiful artwork. At first you will not notice the uniqueness from the start but as it continues while maintaining the strokes you will really see the difference.
You have inspired me ordered my charcoal supplies yesterday and I’ll be here tomorrow
Very impressive, nuanced work.
Absolutely, stunning.
12:52 It's crazy how just two chaotic yet calculated strokes of the eraser added back the exaggeratedness and dynamic nature that you were talking about towards the beginning.
Fantastic! I'm inspired to give it a go, so thanks for that!
I need to show this to my art teacher. He is going to love the way you work.
Thank you for sharing, i really love it!
Beautiful artwork, very inspiring. Good for you , thanks for sharing.
Stunning. Im amazed at your technique. Absolutely beautiful. I especially liked that you were explaing the things you were doing and why. I have been drawing, since grade school. (Im in my 60's) My high school art teacher would fail my work repeatedly as I didnt do an assignment the way she was seeing it.
Wow! I am in awe of this guy!
Wow. Incredible talent. You have a gift.
Instant fan, love your work..
So glad that I stumbled across this video. This work is so beautiful, and so is your process. I found myself watching and thinking that you were showing great restraint by not getting your fingers right into it and interacting that way, and then sure enough there comes the fingers. What I love about this process is the way it permits so much in terms of intuitive decisions about movement and intensity. Sometimes the best thing we could do is get out of our own way as artists and let the piece of work become. I am more drawn to Abstract landscapes than portraiture, but this technique could translate into a variety of subject, and even of media. I am on a tight budget until I get through tax season, but I look forward to Visiting your shop when things loosen up a bit. Thank you for sharing this.
That was amazing! I can so often see detailed faces in abstracts, like they’re windows for spirits to gaze upon our world. You created such a window with such a beautiful blend of abstract & suggestion that the face & emotion are portrayed.
