This was Slipknots most heavy album by a long shot AND they were heavy into drugs at this time while their record label was asking them to be more radio friendly so they made the least radio friendly album they could. To me, it is their best album after you acclimate to the heavy riffs and subject matter.

The only thing I will debate is this being their heaviest album. I can agree with over all sound, but I would definitely say The Grey Chapter is the Heaviest due to the nature of the content and atmosphere. Heavy on the subject and heart. Not to cause some hateful debate. I just feel it's one of those aspects we totally forget. There are 2 types of heavy in metal music. You have the heavy chaotic sound, and then you have the heavy topics and subjects. Just because there are no blast beats and screaming doesn't make a song less heavy. The song snuff in this aspect is easily the heaviest song played by Corey Taylor. It is heavy on the heart and touches the soul. Now back to the video.

I wouldn't say it's their heaviest album "by a long shot". Some of the songs are pretty "meh". Self-titled is just as heavy in places. Vol.3 has some heavies, as does AHIG. In fact the AHIG title track is one of their heaviest songs.

@@ThexCatmanx I grew up with the same understanding of the term. I'm 35 and grew up on the Big 4. 8:07 girl nailed it. This is the reason many people listen to metal. It allows you a healthy outlet to get some emotions out. If you ever go to a metal show, it’s on of the most loving experiences. There’s an instant brotherhood. Everyone knows and everyone takes care of each other, no matter how chaotic it seems, everyone is there doing the same thing and we understand. I can’t tell you the amount of people I’ve hugged after a show that I will never meet again because in those few hours, we understood each other

This song is about the uncontrollable rage that can come from bullied and abused people. Love that this song is so hard cause is a real release of all the murderous and suicidal tendencies anyone can have specially as a kid when you haven't learned how to fully control your rage. That's why I always say that teenagers should go at least once to a therapist before any pent-up angers boils over (a psych check-up like you do for a physical check-up to prevent diseases).

Yuuuup. There's a darkness that is born in you when you go through that shit, and yeah, that's why I love metal - I feel like I unwittingly channeled all the angst from the shit I went through into metal [and Eminem's early stuff] and it let me be a happy and more stable person. Still wound up having a psychotic break because I apparently inherited my dad's bipolar, and that was scary as hell to go through [though now I'm just fascinated by it], so now I just kinda feel even closer to darker music.

When Lexi said that listening to Slipknot seems to be like working out pent up negative energy and feelings and emotions, she nailed it. That is exactly what Slipknot has been to me since childhood. When you feel lost, alone, angry, depressed, and like everything is out of your control, this is the kind of music that lets you burn all of that rage and negativity out of you in a healthy way. People will say this kind of music is bad or makes people angry, but they're so so wrong. This is the music that keeps the anger from manifesting in much worse ways.

This song is about corey and his bully at school, he's releasing all his pent up rage, how he feels about the bully, what he would do to the bully... As a victim of bullying, this song resonates so strong within me

Lex is right. Slipknot does that for me. The lyrics help me release what’s bothering me inside. When I don’t want to talk to anyone. Slipknot has helped me through out my life. They claim me down and help me relax when I listen to them with the volume up very loud. I can block out my problems and just enjoy great music.

IOWA is the darkest album the band has ever created. The entire band hated each other at this point (2001) and it was the darkest time of their career. With the first album being such a great success they went none stop touring, doing press that they jumped right in on writing the 2nd album. My favorite Album of all time. You guys need to react to more songs from this album.

If I'm not mistaken, corey was singing about a bully of his and letting loose his aggression about what he went through. (Edit: you looked it up, I guess I was close enough) And if you're doing more off the Iowa album, I'd recommend 'I am hated' for Corey's rap-esque flow or 'heretic anthem' because the lyrics sound shocking but aren't about what you think they would be.

Lex is right about workin out the negativity and anger and depression. If you ever experienced a mosh pit in full swing you would understand it. That is what a lot of metal does and there was a study not too long ago that showed not only did metal heads have musical tastes in common with people who listen to classical music, but it also showed that they are much more emotionally secure and prepared to deal with things like death, depression, disappointment than non-metal heads because it is a constant subject matter of a favored past time of theirs. So metal heads tend to have a healthier relationship with negative aspects of life than most other people do.

You guys are a great couple! I really enjoy your videos. Lex, you nailed it. This music allows someone to release pent up energy, anger, anguish, etc. This is quintessential Iowa...I mean growing up in Iowa (where Slipknot is from). It is such a unique upbringing, with very little of the Coastal US influencing the population. I am the same age as these guys, and I am sure we were influenced by the same artists (albums our parents had, for sure). Punk shows used to come through the VFWs in the area (punk bands trying to generate enough cash to get to the next big show in a big city), and those little tidbits of heavy, deep, release-yourself kinda music permeated through a generation, or two. Long story short....Slipknot. Lex, you got a single sister? Brad, come hang out....love the depth of your analysis. You guys are awesome. Keep 'em coming!
