Is it weird that the part with Gustave singing and playing that cadenza with Erik is what really made me love this musical even more? Possibly more so than the first musical. It’s just so powerful and adds to the story even more.

I had chills.

I actually quite prefer the changes they did to the show. It feels more like the first musical. Not like a fanfiction. Especially the changes in beauty underneath. It feels more like Erik is taking more time with Gustave and makes more sense why he thinks it’s his kid. The cadenza Gustave does is like the mirror reflecting Christine’s innocence all those years ago back when she didn’t fear Erik, or at least as much. It just makes more sense than just playing a couple notes on a piano, like they used to do in the original and the Australian version.

JulietteMarie I completely agree! It also justifies what Erik was thinking, because in the London version- well, a lot of kids can play the piano.

Finally got to see this show live after following everything from the Original London Cast album that came out 7 years ago. When I realized Gustave was playing Christine's cadenza from the end of Phantom of the Opera it hit me right in the feels

I'm right there with you! I was still pretty young when this show first came out, I had only been in the phantom about a year. And I'm a big music buff, so let me tell you I screamed internally when they added the leitmotifs to this new version of the show.

Yup, right there with you on the music buff thing too! I didn't recognize what Gustave was playing the very first time, but as he did it the second time I literally slapped my hand over my heart when it clicked. And then Erik recognized it and ahhh. AND THEN THEY STARTED SINGING TO IT AND AHHHHHHH!

Also I have the Melbourne DVD so I already knew 99% of what was in this version, BUT THAT BIT WITH THAT CADENZA TOOK ME TOTALLY BY SURPRISE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY

I wish I could have gotten the video for this scene, because the acting was tremendous. The way Gardar just freezes when the kid starts playing the cadenza, and he just snaps and gets this frenzied, desperate look and jerky movements. It was amazing to see and hear.

The way his voice breaks when he says "Sing for me!!!" He did that when I saw him, too, it's not only this recording.

I still like the old version of Beauty Underneath.

I agree but the new Beautiful is better but the old Beauty underneath with it's rock tone was awesome

Deanna I know! I just saw it last night with my friend, and I think we both almost started crying. I'm not sure why XD Maybe it was the nostalgia, but it's just... wow I think we saw it with Jake, though. Who sings it in this version?

You are very welcome! I too was disappointed with the lack of an understandable recording of the new version, so I wanted to try to get as good a one as I could!

This is the first time I heard this version... It's so damn beautiful! 😭💞 I love the UK cast, haven't listened to the Australian version yet but I'm gonna watch it when it's released today but this is STUNNING! 😍 So excited to see it professionally recorded!

Damn!!! This version is so more cool!!!! I need a cd cast!!

I've just spent about a half an hour enjoying your videos, so thank you so much for posting these, and for your future efforts. Love this show! Saw Gardar in Hamburg, and now 2x in Providence - and I certainly would pay for an official CD of the US show! Until they decide to make a CD available, uploads like yours are the only way for us who love the show, to have a permanent memento of what it actually sounds like here. Thank you!!!!!

There is an official CD. The tour is now selling a CD of the Australian production at all of their stops with all of the changes that the tour has from that included on the CD. They recorded the new stuff with Ben Lewis and Casey Lyons from the tour. (I can confirm this is accurate too bc I've gotten a copy of it)

Hi, I finally was able to log on to reply! I wonder how one can get the recording of the entire show that you described - I know that ALW is releasing a 4-CD "unmasked" set of recordings from all his shows in early March, and that will include a new Beauty Underneath sung by Ben Lewis and Casey Lyons. But I haven't heard of an ENTIRE new LND recording! That's what we have been asking for! I saw the show most recently in Boston and they were still selling the original London recording, so I'm very psyched about what you wrote.

It's not an entire new recording. It's basically the Australian audio from the DVD in CD form, but they re-recorded Beauty Underneath and added a few other things that were changed for the tour.

Sounds like I will have to get that CD, too. (I have pre-ordered the 4-CD 'unmasked' ALW set.) In 2012 I made myself a CD of the audio from the Australian version DVD, but of course the 'minor' changes (from Hamburg and USA tour) are excellent. Great! Thanks. Still not a CD of the tour show with Gardar, though, so they should understand why people look for bootleg recordings.

The night I saw this there was just something so flat and pretty about Gardars voice. He can emote!!!!!!!!

Who's the Gustave in this one? His voice is so angelic.

I'm confused. Has this been rearranged/rewritten again? This is different from the Australian Recording and the original. I found a few recordings from the German production and it seems this is similar. Did they revise for the national tour?

Joseph Portillo it has been revised again. There were some significant character/musical changes I felt really enhanced the story overall, and I’ve only seen a few clips from the German show, but I think you’re correct to say it’s more similar to that.

The parts they've taken out were much more suited to a rockier voice. Perhaps many Phantoms since Ramin don't really suit that "rock tenor" vocal. Just a theory

DistantCousin I had a similar thought, since it was changed first for Lewis with the Australian cast, and now very changed now with Gardar and the US tour.

That should still be “Gustave” at this point, but I did notice that you start also hearing notes from the chorus at about this point as part of the lead-in to the big number. (-:
