The "danger of hope" is precisely why it's better to underpromise and overdeliver than vice versa. The pain of disappointment is far greater than the surprise of exceeding expectations.

Well said, I wonder if your can apply this equation to the opposite sphere of emotion, such as negativity. In a situation that'll likely cause you difficulty, with a little bit of anxiety and fear. Perhaps you should overestimate the challenge you're going into and then it'll turn out not as bad as you think. Therefore the pleasures of finding out it's not as bad is greater than the feeling of fear of the situation you expected.

You've misunderstood "hope". JP isn't referring hope as if one hopes for a magical outcome outside of our control. He meant it the correct way which is to undertake a task or a challenge in hopes of culminating the task set before you. Again dopamine is the pursuit, the appetite not "hopes for gratification". There is no danger to hope to better ourselves.

Oh, to have Jordan Peterson as a therapist! I am confident he could show me a path forward out of the depressive pit I know so well. His analysis of situations are always so dead on, or at least the ones that speak to my own experiences. I think he could fix me in one go. 😂 I sure love this man. Actually, both of these men are a delight to listen to. Now I just need to listen to this again, take notes, and figure out a game plan to become that better, future me. ❤

Definitely something ive had to acknowledge and work on. I would often visualise and anticipate how a social event would go to get the motivation to do it, only to feel depressed and underwhelmed during/after because it didnt go as i had expected. The overwhelm of putting mysepf out of my comfort zone and feeling that it was "for nothing" spiralled me mentally. Its extremely hard now to go into things "blindly" (needing control but accepting i dont actually have it) and be ok with whatever does/doesnt happen. There is an inherent need for that dopamine hit of "i actually enjoyed myself" -to often find it doesnt come to fruition, is one of the hardest tests/lessons of life im struggling to accept. Its hard to not feel that sense of "i cant enjoy anything in life - with or without hope attached".

So focusing on a specific situation where can improve, in looking at minimum issue of problem that you are facing. Point made in how to help make a case for yourself - even if you are making depressive reactions to setbacks that are creating problems in having the resilience to move forward. Really profound implications for moving forward in a constructive and healthy way.

Dopamine is supposed to be linked to pleasure, anticipation and addiction. I begin to think that it's nice, maybe somewhat necessary but also short acting. Serotonin gets my attention since it seems related to deeper changes like satisfaction, winning and status. I get a Dopamine spike if I eat sugar which I try to avoid, I don't want my life to be joyless but addiction is destructive. My serotonin rises after a heavy workout and I feel that I have achieved something. Success makes me happy but also esteem and self promotion. Does that make sense?

my whole wide entire life, it’s like, I go in “spurts”. Spurts of beating self doubt followed by spurts of depression and stuff. Adhd, addictions, albeit low level. But still debilitating. Maybe per my adhd, still haven’t found the silver bullet to overcoming spurts of depression and self doubt. But I also know I have overcome it at times. So, my nee strategy is telling myself over and over as often as possible..”catch myself. stop. start over again” it works some of time😅. I’ve basically concluded it will always be a struggle and maybe that’s not ok.. but it’s not not ok either😂. Stop! Start over again. And I pray in Jesus name more and more hopefully also. Also. I quit all my adhd Vyvanse and meds and stuff. I decided that, maybe adhd drugs weren’t helping my other addiction issues…

The part around 7:30 onwards is fascinating because I've been feeling a great deal of loneliness for the last 2 months. I've purposely cut myself off from friends, and I can see how every time I felt even slightly this way, I would reach out to them in an effort to feel better. Now I want to see what lies behind the pain. Here I am today, going headfirst into my existential dread and loneliness. It sucks, but it feels like the right thing to do for now!

JP IS BASICALLY MAKING THE CASE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PERSONA THAT REVOLVES AROUND ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR THAT WILL EVENTUALLY CONSUME AND hurt the physical body so the dopaminergic system itself is not to blame but rather the reinforcing psychosocial structures that reinforce the destructive behavior. One must learn to self observe the thread that goes far back to the very creation of that compulsive behavior to reposition yourself in a TODAY of working on yourself by using your dopaminergic system in a healthy way which Huberman and Lempke have ample information on the techniques to do so. That will help create the needed distance for you to help you observe the difference and help you disconnect from the old self destructive patterns more easily. All the best!

So essentially, the anticipation and the excitement of a goal for example is where your dopamine rises and your anatomical system subconsciously takes that goal as a reward so it’s sealed that if you don’t hit that Goal , there will be deep disappointment where as if you didn’t put so much emphasis on the goal , there wouldn’t be such a drastic drop in dopamine . I guess you could say it’s better to not over estimate your abilities, don’t give it power , and that can be said with anything.

So in order to beat self doubt, you must need to learn the proper way of handling failures and mistakes. You need to regain your sense of self. For me, the proper way is to trace back the roots of the problem and create future selves that corrects or avoid the roots that caused the failure or mistake in the first place. In simple explanation, learn from your failures.
