I got the Whitetail Maxx a few days ago, and I got it tuned perfectly. However, I did have to shift the cams over to the left so that the total shim thickness on the left side of the cams were 7/32". This did two things - it took out the bottom cam leaning away from the cable; and it put the arrow exactly at 7/8" perfectly parallel to the riser. When I got the bow out of the box, the bottom cam was leaning away from the cable so much, the drawstop peg was sliding past the cable and making a click. Moving the cams to the left fixed that. The $600 Whitetail Maxx tuned up even better than my Bowtech Solution SS, whish is a $1200 bow. I've got the Whitetail Maxx set at 64# and 27", and it shoots a 385 grain arrow at 271 fps, whereas my Solution SS is set at 71# on the Comfort setting and 27", and it shoots a 360 grain arrow at 275 fps. By my estimates, the Whitetail Maxx shooting the 360 grain arrow would probably push the speed to 285/290 fps. I'll take the Whitetail Maxx for the faster speeds at lower poundage all day, every day. I think Bear Archery has come a long way in the past 2 decades, and I'm really liking the current offerings, a lot, with a lot of winners in the line-up.

I recently got a Kuma 30. Shot a doe with it on Sunday - season opener. Not my target deer, but the wind wasn't right for that stand. Maybe this coming Sunday!!!

Just for the record....my wife is here letting you all know that some people can't afford a $1000+ bow. In fact, she reminded me that my Alaskan XT for $660 is a LOT of money. Lol. But I am extremely pleased with the quality, weight, balance, technology and performance at this price point. I chose the Alaskan XT over the Maxx primarily because the draw cycle is noticeably smoother. And the Alaskan is a bit "softer" shooting and quieter. It also was more balanced and held better for me with a 29.5" or 30" draw. But I had a tough time deciding between the 2. This journey started a couple years ago with the Species, Legit and Adapt. Then the Adapt Plus last year. Now this year these 2 bows brought me to my final decision. Well done gents. Thank you.

I've got a LH Kuma 33 and it's my first real bow. I think it's been very good to me so far, and I'll keep using it until it's time to upgrade. I think the Surpass looks very similar to the Kuma appearance and spec-wise but it sounds like Bear has been doing a great job improving year after year. Kudos to the Bear Archery team for keeping the tradition and name alive!

I agree with the idea that bear has to shake its budget bow image and the Bear of today is vastly different than bear was 10 years ago. I also hear Bear and those sponsored by Bear say that their bows compete with any on the market but then year after year the very test that P.J. is a part of (the Bow of the year Outdoor Life test) ranks Bear near the bottom each and every year. P.J. is on this podcast and I respect his opinion and tests but it will be very interesting to see him talk about the new Persist and then see where it shakes out in next year's bow of the year tests. If it continues to rank near or at the bottom of flagship bows then there needs to be some serious inlooking at Bear.

if Bear wants to compete with high dollar flagships they need to develop some truly unique tech... ...or pay to license patented tech from other companies. When you are talking $1200 price range and your bow doesn't have any fancy tuning technology, and doesn't have the name recognition of Bowtech, Mathews, or Hoyt, what exactly is making it worth $1200? If you don't have any unique tech at $1200, why not just buy the $600 bear? The truth is that Bear's high end offerings don't really offer a tangible advantage over their lower cost bows. To their credit, they have some of the best options in the market in that lower price range, but yo don't see the bigger name higher cost brands offering great mid and low cost bows becasue it eats away at their flagship bows credibility.
