Be Beautiful, Be Yourself | TWOII podcast | Episode #50

In episode 50, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach and journalist Jo Confino contemplate how to find compassion for ourselves - even when we feel stuck and unable to move forward, and know what to do but enter self-loathing rather than self-compassion. Together, they discuss what it is to love ourselves and what a difference it can make. Plus, why is it so difficult to change? What should we be mindful of? And what is love to us?
Brother Phap Huu further considers how helpful insights can blossom; attaining new views of growth in spirituality; unconditional love; what it is to be stuck and how to unstick ourselves; ‘striving’ energy, perceptions, and aspirations; creating new stories; and acceptance.
Jo starts with a confession before sharing about epiphanies; times when one’s story is more important than one’s happiness; self-worth; cultivating change at the edges; and mindful reminders.
The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.
Enjoy!

I see much of myself as a young woman and fairly recently as driving others away as too needy. I’m also seeing myself in regurgitating a particular story rather than letting it go and being happy. Old habits die hard. Part of the process for me is an ebook of Suttas interpreted by Steve Weissman. Just read the first he chose, a lecture given by the Buddha to his son, admonishing him to reflect on whether physical, verbal and mental actions were harmful or beneficial to oneself or others before, during or after the actions.

Love to me is forgiving and accepting ourselves and others and also showing them love as in a labor of love. That’s means taking care of the children and elderly ourselves and each other in different ways. Sometimes we just have to put our feelings aside and take action

I don't think the buddha would approve of pushing people to the ground as a compassionate way of dealing with suffering. And Buddha himself emphasized the practical nature of his ideas, favoring philosophical enquiry over religious dogma. I am seeing the Buddhism is in someway competing with religion using some of the same words. I have a lot of religion trauma so when you use the same words it creates suffering in me. I am working on that. There are so many other words that can be used. You touch on the teachings of the Buddha that gives me true insight. I appreciate those so much.

Thank you for the heartfelt insights and teachings of your journey. I feel it is always a blessing of core truth and love of life to speak openly to the humbling fallibilities that come with walking our own days. It is one of my best ways to heal and grow myself. So when I am gifted to hear another sharing so openly and sincerely of their numbs and divots along a path considered as noble and honorable, my heart warms and expands in gratitude in an even greater understanding that - I am not alone; we are all kindred hearts and the more I remain present to this in my beingness, the more it blossoms in the world around me. Thank you friends for your sharing of time, heart, and devotion to your selves.

Actually…there is something I experience listening to this podcast and I would like to express this in case some other listeners feel like me. I would like to hear more of Brother Phap Huu. He is becoming a quite mature soul in his path and what he shared in this particular podcast was so deep. Is so deep, because it still resonates in me. Mr Joe is a different soul, that of a teenager. That’s how it feels to me. I appreciate his short questions, energy and humor…but when he talks too much, I am sorry, but it sincerely doesn’t nourish me. It sort of feels like advertisement time. Like sort of “lost time” when he rambles on and on about personal life and for example how “he taught” a lesson to the young monastic. It is just my point of view and I could be wrong. Also, maybe I am not seeing other things. Mr Joe is nice, as an interviewer, not as a dharma teacher. Not his place. Not his gift. I am sorry Joe but, in my opinion, if you could make your commentaries short and sweet that would be nicer. Your strong suit are the questions. Dharma teaching: let Brother Phap Huu talk more. Thank you for reading
