BDK Gris Charnel Extrait - real world fragrance review

In this video, I review BDK Gris Charnel Extrait, an exquisite fragrance that takes the beloved Gris Charnel to unpredictable places. This should offer a deeper and richer scent profile, with notes of fig, black tea, and cardamom blending seamlessly with creamy sandalwood and tonka bean. The result is a mesmerizing and sensual experience that lingers on the skin but is very intimate. I'll share my thoughts on its longevity, sillage, and how it evolves over time, making it a must-watch for anyone considering adding this luxurious extrait to their collection.

I always appreciate reviewers who are true and authentic and not trying to be something, except that they are just simply trying to express themselves. Thats when magic happens I believe, love your unbiased, honest and experiential reviews while being aware of how things are working. Great insight on how a brand can be forced into created something which might not have been originally intended. Keep up the amazing work. Much love from India 🇮🇳

I’m an Amouage fanboy but I do think Amouage knows how to make extrait versions of their fragrances, they been at it for a long time and are also experienced with oils. It’s not that extraits are better or worse, it’s about knowing how to use that language.

Totally agree with you. I got a sample set from BDK and I wanted to try this and Pas Ce Soir extrait. I could barely smell the fragrance. No sillage. Pas Ce Soir extrait is much more projecting but I think it’s too sweet. The original Gris Charnal is better than the extrait in my opinion. I got Amouage interlude 53 yesterday and that is a beast. Not sure about BDK I’ll wear the sample of the original Gris Charnal and pas ce soir extrait, but I doubt I’ll get anything from this house.

Someone on Reddit said that it’s just BDK being intentionally old fashioned and going for a scent meant to be smelled when you greet someone with a kiss thing on the cheek. I’m not really buying this…

Very interesting assessment. Apparently there must be quality control issues, I bought mine in 2022, and there are no bubbles on the sticker and the bottle doesn’t have any dust or bubbles inside the glass.

I thankfully for me did not have any of the quality control issues you mentioned and I have 2 bottles of it as I love the scent. I do smell it through the fragrance development albeit it’s close to the skin. I do not think it’s meant for summer as this is more of a winter, fall scent and the younger brother has more of a spring, early summer vibe. After wearing it for a while I believe I have gotten more nose blind to it and tend to wear it a bit more scarcely but people close to me, girlfriend, friends always mention what I am wearing it smells so good and even have girlfriend asking me don’t wear something else wear the one I really like haha

As mentioned, I really like the scent itself. In this subjective sea of experiences I just found myself incompatible with this one. I might have been unlucky with the QC but I still find it unacceptable at this price point.

@@SeldomlyOften Yeah, i'm pretty sure thats all it is. I also had that same issue with Dolce & Gabbana's Velvet Incenso. There were mixed views about its performance but I took a chance anyway seeing as how it was being sold at a great price. Long story short, I tested it out & the performance was terrible. A fresh spray wouldnt even project from my hand. A few months later & now it projects just fine. By the way, If you're into Incense frags Dolce & Gabbana's Velvet Incenso is a great one. I'll say its almost identical to Tom Ford's Sahara Noir. Minus the boozy opening.

Had none of the mentioned quoality issues and quite like the fact, that the smell stays close to the skin. I wore it mostly in winter/early spring for the sake of my own joy; I did not want to bother everyone around me, especially in the office. It's a good scent for this purpose. However, it's true, if you intend to project it is not the most effective of scents. But also the scent profile does not really lend itself for projection, I think. It's a soothing, calming, intimate scent, not a loud and attention demanding one. Therefore, I would not even see a big use in making this scent project more.

This is interesting because I could definitely smell it on me personally, although yeah it doesn't project very much probably by nature of it being an extrait-- its heavier and will stay closer the skin. The original version definitely projects more but will last a bit less of course. But from all of the quality control issues you have and it being a little weak to you I'm inclined to think you might have just received a really bad batch and im sorry to hear that. @@SeldomlyOften they do make sets on their website that you can choose what samples you'd like from what I've seen, and I'm sure you can find pre-made ones online. I think I might go for that too to try the ones I haven't seen at the shop I visit in NYC. I also heard layering the original with the extrait does actually work really well since the original projects a bit more and is more top-note heavy, and the extrait helps with the trail and longevity -- but that would be something id personally only try from discovery samples/travel packs and if it ends up becoming a favorite I might hit up discounters for the original and keep reupping on travel sizes of the extrait to add body to the scent as needed. But thats just a thought I've been playing around with in my head

I bought a bottle of the extrait this year directly from BDK and it is the weakest, most disappointing perfume in my collection. While I like the smell, it became a skin scent almost instantly and I couldn’t smell it after 5 min. Overpriced and overhyped. Terrible shame about the presentation. Can't say that I'm surprised though. A lot of unacknowledged cutbacks in the luxury sector since the pandemic, and even then, most quality boundaries are illusory. Barring budget constraints, the people that make celeb scents or dupes get their materials and perfumers from the same place niche brands do. Bottled in the same factories too; although you may indeed have an anomaly on your hands. Haven't tried the extrait myself, but I had a sample of the OG and enjoyed it for a while. Not something I'd get a bottle of though.
