BBC witnesses tragedy as 7-year-old and four adults die trying to cross English Channel | BBC News

A seven-year-old girl and four adults have died while attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat. They’re the latest migrants to have lost their lives while attempting to reach the UK by sea from France.
The BBC was filming on a beach south of the port of Calais at night when a group of 110 people boarded the heavily overloaded boat, as French police tried to stop them.
The boat quickly ran into trouble. The seven-year-old girl, a woman and three men died despite efforts to rescue them.
The incident took place one day after British members of parliament approved plans to send migrants seeking asylum to Rwanda to have their claims processed there, in a deal with the east African nation.
The UK government says this will deter migrants from crossing the Channel in small boats. UK opposition parties have opposed the plan saying it will be ineffective and inhumane.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Andrew Harding in France.

Sadly a 7 year old does not have a choice to cross or not. The adults have choice. Those adults who are brandishing sticks to deter the police from intervening at the smugglers. So many with enough money to pay these smugglers for illegal crossing. I mentioned to a carer here on a sod sponsored visa that I was buying a new mattress and would get the council to take the old one. Her English is poor but straight away she said 'Do the council give free mattresses?' No matter how they come here it is obvious why they are here. I explained I had to pay the council to take my old mattress away. Another asked me how much pension I got from the state. These are not illegal migrants and yet the topic is the same. How much can we get for free? I am a realist and this all cannot be allowed to continue. Illegal or legal. The legal work sponsored are not doctors, engineers. They are on minimum wage and cannot claim public funds. Their work sponsors are becoming very rich and when those they sponsor have worked for 5 years, they are given British Citizenship and access to all public funds!

In terms of the wider immigration debate, most people I know are pro legal immigration, but pro legal _controlled_ immigration, and not pro intaking 750,000 new people per year as if we were a landmass the size of America. The other elephant in the room here that needs to be openly discussed without fear or favour is Islam. As a secular agnostic, I mistrust _all_ organised religion, but the one I _most_ mistrust, in the world currently as it stands, is Islam. Wherever it goes and wherever it rubs up against antithetical cultures it seems there is trouble. If you drop a drip of red dye into a bath full of water it doesn’t show up. If you pour a bucket of red dye into the same bath, it changes it instantly forever. There’s a lot to be said for gradualism. (Edit: UK currently has 7% Muslim population. Current projections predict it will be 17% by 2050. By 2050 Sweden is predicted to have a 30% Muslim population; a third of Sweden will be Islamic. Interesting times.)
