Like yesterday. I get flashes of how I felt then watching this. That excitement and optimism about life. Everything seemed possible. I had loads of friends ..part of a family ..clever with great exam results..great health ......... Sadly didn't turn out that way. 54 childless and not married. Lonely lonely lonely

I'm sorry for your situation. I'm 10 years younger and in a similar situation. Even if you're unmarried and childless, I hope you have stuff in your life to sustain you and give you some joy.

My dear fellow. I am so sorry. We are the same age. I was 54 this Oct 2023. I am divorced and have been single for the past ten years through choice. So many nutters. They either want you for your money, or are so fat and overweight they are desperate and or have so much baggage and issues of their own in tow. I never had kids either. And yes it can be lonely. BUT its also liberating, freedom, time to do what you want, with your cash and no one else telling you what you can and cant do and when to do it. Its almost like being a child again, with less restrictions, and the cash to get whatever treats you wish. Stay strong. I was 18 when this Christmas from 87 trailers were on tv. I was also working for a nasty vindictive bully of a boss in a job I hated and doing forty hours a week for only £60. Things improved and I got out of there, but it was many years later so all these happy xmas memories of past tv etc just remind me of the brief highs, the fun parts of Christmas, but looming over it all, was the knowledge that in a few days I would be back in that horrible job again. Getting used and abused for almost nine hours a day, every day, till I wanted to kill myself. Or the bully boss...it was a miracle I did not snap. Anyhoo, that was years ago. Enjoy and make the most of your time, your freedom and dont stress on the fact your on your own. Own it instead. Be you, and enjoy life and make the most of your health and time on earth....

I would go back to these days in a heart beat. I was home with my parents, brothers and great aunt. Now my dad isn’t here and we no longer have our family home. I’m now 40 and I miss my childhood more than ever.

The Two Ronnies, Only Fools and Horses and Joan Hickson's Miss Marple all in one evening, what a great lineup. BBC 1 christmas day schedules have certainly declined. Nowadays it's Call the Midwife and Mrs Brown's boys.

Apart from Jim'll Fix It, that's quite a great line-up. Admittedly, a lot of the humour has dated since then, but a lot of it will have been funny at the time, and there are some particularly great movie premieres. Plus, I love that back in the day, you still had big shows and films late at night (i.e. Terms of Endearment on Christmas Day, and Fry and Laurie at five to midnight on Boxing Day!)

The mid 80s is where things start to feel "modern" - I don't know if that's just because TV was becoming a little more sophisticated or whether I was just a little older. I was 13 when this was shown and it feels like it was yesterday. And yet we can't go back to 1987 any more than we can go back to 1887, or 2007. All these moments are gone. But new moments have yet to come so I suppose we have to be grateful. But when you're 13, you don't wonder about time slipping away, the future feels like it'll never come. Then, suddenly you're 50, your kids are growing up and talking about their memories from the early 2000s. It's nice to have things like this preserved though.

The BBC got record complaints after Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was broadcast on Xmas day - because of the violent and gory content. Points of View had them all on.

When BBC ONE was worth watching on Christmas Day. Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom pulled in an audience of 19 million alone. The rest of the festive schedule was far more diverse & entertaining too compared to the crap that masqueraded as a schedule in Christmas 2023. And the BBC wonders why an increasing number of people are cancelling their TV licence !

I was 6 in 1987. Is it just the fact that i was 6, or did Christmas feel different back then? Seemed more genuine back then with more meaning. Plus we only had 4 channels so everyone had to watch the same thing, more or less.
