The mid 80s is where things start to feel "modern" - I don't know if that's just because TV was becoming a little more sophisticated or whether I was just a little older. I was 13 when this was shown and it feels like it was yesterday. And yet we can't go back to 1987 any more than we can go back to 1887, or 2007. All these moments are gone. But new moments have yet to come so I suppose we have to be grateful. But when you're 13, you don't wonder about time slipping away, the future feels like it'll never come. Then, suddenly you're 50, your kids are growing up and talking about their memories from the early 2000s. It's nice to have things like this preserved though.

I can’t believe how times have changed so much. I know it’s a cliche, but tv WAS so much better quality back then (apart from Les Dennis maybe 🤣) Even watching this now brings back those magical Christmas vibes from the past.

Great programme ❤ where though is Gloria’s rendition of a spoonful of sugar? I can’t see it anywhere on KZread? So many legends in Northern Ireland from Eammon Holmes to Gerry Kelly and of course Gloria herself. Not forgetting too Rose Neill and Paul Clark. And the legend that is Julian Simmons 😂 Wonderful people in a wonderful part of the UK 🇬🇧🤩

Telling your cable TV provider “I want my MTV” was normal in the USA. In Germany, the television broadcasters (including public ones) had to pay to feed into the cable television network. When the MTV satellite broadcast on ASTRA was encrypted in Eurocrypt II in 1995, THE Germany-wide cable provider paid for Pay MTV so that "young people" could "force their parents to connect to cable." When a brain dead Reporter (ZDF) makes a Video to 25 years (or 30 ?) of MTV, it can happen that he forget that MTV was pay TV from 1995 - 1999 because the reporter had cable television. I didn't like grunge music anyway. There was just a commercial on TV that said every tenant (he wants) should register with Vodfone themselves from July 1st, 2024, because then they can no longer be forced to pay (not watch) cable television through a community levy.

I was 6 in 1987. Is it just the fact that i was 6, or did Christmas feel different back then? Seemed more genuine back then with more meaning. Plus we only had 4 channels so everyone had to watch the same thing, more or less.

On September 13th 2010, analogue signals were cut off for good, as BRF Eins, BRF Zwei, RTL/RTL Drei, Kanal Vier, and Funf converted their analogue signals to digital. Satellite Television already went full digital on October 23rd 2004, while cable television already cut the cord on Analogue on July 5th 2001. This completed the "Digitales Fernsehen für alle" promise that was created on June 17th 1999 by the 5 channels with help from the Government.

He has been extremely lucky to keep being in the job this long considering the amount of times he brought up the RTE scandal in this his first season. It's not like he isn't costing RTE money with the flights in & out of Dublin from London weekly

Considering the way they shafted Dermot Morgan when it came to Scrap, footing the price of a weekly return flight to and from London, RTE suits can colour themselves being receipted leniently. So mildly, in fact it's practically Chirstian!

When BBC ONE was worth watching on Christmas Day. Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom pulled in an audience of 19 million alone. The rest of the festive schedule was far more diverse & entertaining too compared to the crap that masqueraded as a schedule in Christmas 2023. And the BBC wonders why an increasing number of people are cancelling their TV licence !

Wow, I didn’t know MTVEurope started so late, you would think it would have been at the height of the second British Invasion 82/83. MTV gave a lot of British groups a lot of exposure in America at that time

I prefer not to think that way myself. That said though, Patrick - Right man, right time. I'm in the UK and Gay and the late late will always talked and thought of together - can't have one without the other. I also heard the criticisms about late late was showing it's age. With Patrick at the helm on camera now he can make his time as host as indelible as Gay's. Good luck to you Paddy.👍🤞
