Correct. Jourdan was like Milton’s Satan - at a war with God and taking his hatred out on everyone around him. A rough draft for the Nazis.

I agree completely. I saw the 1977 version for the first time a few years ago. It is tuly incredible. There is one scene where he is in his coffin and turns and looks at the camera, completely bielevably spooky. Great movie. I measure all other versions against that version. None are quite as good in my humble opinion.

Agreed. That 1977 BBC production with Jourdan is excellent and highly regarded by most experts as the most faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's original book.

Mike Mathews The character Dracula is based on WAS a hero. He single handedly saved Europe from the hordes of Turks. They were a better equipped and superior force in every right, but Vlad of Dracul kept them from overrunning much of Europe by a brilliant use of shock warfare against them. Although the Ottomans were able to later recover and mount some successes, they were never able to do the kind of damage they could have done if not for "Dracula's" initial resistance. Vlad Tepes was not a monster but a genius and is a hero to everyone of European descent.

"Shall we walk, Arthur?" "No." ..."Shall we walk?" (They walk) "I have a book of poems in my pocket." "PLEASE don't read a poem." (He reads the poem.) So shocking that this marriage wouldn't go so well. What with him utterly disregarding both the threat he represents to her life and health, AND her expressed wishes.

I very much liked this versiion of Dracula mainly because the person who plays Dracula plays someone who is psychopathically cold and manipulatve, without a trace of affection, common humanity or mercy. It's powerfully done. Lucy, also, is beautiful, alive, warm and sexual, the absolute opposite of the main character. All the characters are good and, contrary to another opinion I read here, I think the syphilis introduces interesting Freudianlike undertones that fit well into the Gothic feel of this version of the story.

Actually, there is a long established tradition of ghost stories at Christmas time in Britain, at least. I'm not sure when it started, but think Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and particularly MR James made a regular tradition of writing a ghost story to read to his students in his roaring log-fired, candle-lit, ancient tome-lined study before the 'Varsity broke up for the season... must've been a hell of an experience for those lucky scholars...

Jourdan was amazing. Suave, amazingly good looking, cultured, charming. But that unblinking killer wolf stare and rueful half-smile were frightening. He’d have made a great Gestapo interrogator. Basically Milton’s Satan - at war with God and determined to destroy everything around him.

OMG Marc! Even though I've already made one comment here, I am regretting the fact that i didn't know about this film sooner! Your role is DOING "things:" to me! Being a huge fan of the novel, and glad that YOUR ROLE stuck somewhat true to the text, with only a minor subrraction from the "old man" image, who is missing a mustache. Other than that, you didn't pull ANY punches doing this portrayal. You encapsulated the Count's TRUE character without all the sappy, unnecessary "love story" parts in other films. I mean sure at the end it looked like you were almost falling for Mina and perhaps in his own way, making her like himself, seeming to need companionship he could relate to, was his end goal. DAMN YOU DR. SEWARD! Although, at the end, when I saw you peer over your cloak with the other homeless, a nice maniacal giggle escaped my lips and I was still rooting for you all the way! Anyway, for the first time EVER, an actor accurately portrayed Dracula's TRUE nature and I want to not only applaud, but give you my ETERNAL thanks for your efforts! I've gotten to the point where I am skipping over parts that aren't yours. I have a deep and abiding appreciation for your portrayal. I apologize for my review being SO late, but again, I only found this film not long ago. NOW, I can't get enough. Also, I like your birthday. Mine is March 18, 1970. Glad we are both Gen X-ers, XOXOX Your Florida Fan, Aszneth

Bram Stoker wrote "Dracula" in 1897. Judging from the costumes, they filmed this to portray the story as taking place in the 1800s. The chemtrail at 7:29 looks out of place when the actors are wearing 19th Century clothing. Obviously, there weren't any chemtrails in the 1800s.

The eponymous character bears a striking resemblance to Mick Jagger. This certainly answers the mystery.

This portrayal of Dracula was a good one. Attractive and romantic to women, but nasty and brutal with the men. I like it when the vampires are portrayed for what they are supposed to be, monsters, walking corpses that feed off of the living to gain life by bringing death to others. Vampires are just supernatural serial killers.I also like that Dracula was shown as being totally for himself and his ends, and didn't fall in love with anyone in the story, they were just his victims and for his use.Death to the notion of the shiny, romantic vampire!

Wheelman Josh - I enjoy the romantic version and the more literal take on it. After reading Debra Harkness' novel, A Discovery of Witches, I fell in love with a vampire for the first time and so far the only time, but after watching the Velsing series, I came to appreciate your take on vampires - as parasites who trade in death for immortality. That said, if they really existed, I think I'd want to be turned. The world will go on to do exciting things which I will miss out on the moment I die.

I wouldn't call it a perfect adaptation, or tv film on its own, but I do like Warren's creepy interpretation of the character, as well as the brooding and gothic atmosphere.
