M'Lord Narrator, please make more. There is not a lot coverage of these types for Battletech.

assaulting an overlord dropship in mechwarrior 4, protecting one during take off or going full rogue route getting that sweet final mission that gets you dropped with your lances from orbit as you assault a base defended by assault mechs. ah those were the days

That was my favorite to do in a Shadowcat, first pop their APU's the shoot right above the engine nozzles!

Spheroid Dropships are basically what happens if an engineer thinks "What if Drop Pods were re-usable AND could serve as a fortified Field Operations Base?" I mean, these things are often so heavily armed and armored they can hold off dedicated attacks on their own, and still bring heavy ground units to battle.

They are definitely no pushovers even for a couple of lances of mechs if they wanna assault one.

My favorite was trashing three Dropships with a Shadowcat. In the Mechwarrior 4 PC game. First was to smash their APU units to prevent their weapons and engines to start. Then a few Light Gauss hits, and some PPC hits, aimed at the spot above the engine nozzles.

Hello Grim. I have mentioned my 'play group' in other missives to your channel. This group met every weekend, for the most part, and played extensively from after working hours on Fridays to early evenings on Sundays. Fridays and Saturdays the playing time would extend to at least Midnight, and often until 2 am. From the beginning, the group used the primary three well known types of Drop Ships. The Leopard, Union, and Overlord Drop Ships. At some time during the first year of playing together, we explored with alternative Drop Ship Designs. And a few were generally accepted as alternates to the usual 3 types most commonly known and played with. I will mention here that most of the accepted alternates were merely re-designs of the 3 commonly used Drop Ships, rather than totally new designs. Although, there ended up being several of those in use by the Group. One such re-design was the Concord Class. A reworking of the Union Drop Ship. This particular type was mostly a cosmetic change to the Union, and featured Four ramp-ways for boarding and exiting BattleMechs. The Harmony Class was a similar reworking of the Overlord Class, and neither the Concord or Harmony's weapons load outs, or Mech Carry Capacity was altered all that much. Both classes saw some swapping of weaponry, and replacement of such systems, but neither were outrageously different from their 'parent' Class. The 'Panther' Class Drop Ship became the 'go to' ship for landing Mechs with Jump Jets, since it eliminated the side doors and had only 'top' mounted 'hatches' to allow Jump Jet Mechs to exit it. It also featured a crane that could fold down flat, that moved in a 'U' shaped slot on top of the Drop Ship, to retrieve damaged Mechs that could not 'jump' back into the Panther's bays. This Drop Ship became very much desired and used when available due to the Drop Ship never having to land, other than to retrieve it's Mechs. This allowed for fast deployment of jump capable Mechs from fairly high up, and reduced the chances that an enemy could fire on the Drop Ship and disable it. In some battles, several 'Panthers' could deploy an entire Company of Jump Capable Mechs to a battlefield, or near by, and allow the Mechs to clear the area for follow on larger Drop Ship loads of heavier Mech types. The Group, fairly early on, recognized that an attacker might not have complete knowledge of a foe's planet, and thus might land in what they saw as an 'empty' area, when in fact it might be something like a Mech Proving Ground, Mech Testing Area, Mech Mock Combat Field, Or even something as 'prosaic' as a Tank Testing or Live Firing Range. This lead to some 'interesting' contested landing scenarios, and to make things 'fair' the Group used a series of Dice Rolls to determine if the Landing Zone was truly empty, or one of the above locales. If memory serves me (it HAS been decades since that time), There were other 'mixed' types of Drop Ships used by the Play Group. Most of them were re-designs of the original 3 Drop Ships above, but their 'load outs' of military equipment varied. An example would be the Unity Class Drop Ship and resembled a Union Class. This carried 'only' half a Company of Mechs, with the remaining space devoted to over a dozen vehicles, and enough space for several 4-man Battle Suit units. The Lion Class Drop Ship was a re-modeling of the old Leopard Class, and carried only tanks, or Battle Suits. Limited to just over 400 tons of vehicles, or, no more than 36 Battle Suits. The Battle Suit version could remain 'in the field' and act as a Repair and Re-Supply Site for the BattleSuit units, since it had a lot of cargo space remaining for such supplies, parts, repair bays, Medical Bay, and so forth. Just a few memories for you to think on. Speaking, Frank-ly

As an addendum to previous postings. Drop Ships are very useful. Not just to get to and from a system's Jump Points. A drop ship can carry loads up into orbit, and from there, anywhere in the solar system. This allows the planetary government, or corporations, to establish mining sites upon asteroids, other planets in the system, or even upon some of those planet's moons. This alone can seriously 'upgrade' a system's ability to generate profits for itself, and access to vast amounts of resources that can be returned to the planet for processing and converting into useful goods that would either be used in the system, or shipped to other systems for profit. The mining and processing of 'rare earth' elements alone would enable a planetary system to afford 'luxury' goods, and items they cannot produce themselves. Shipping such materials would mostly be like filling a 'standard' cargo container of today's shipping system, with 'pelletized' ore nodules. Material that can be smelted, refined, and then used to create items. Most solar systems just don't have enough materials to make them profitable in, and of, themselves. A solar system with dry, arid conditions would find water to be a major hindrance to colonization. But, with drop ships, one has merely to lift off the planet, travel to some moon, and mine water ice for processing upon the planet into drinkable water. A solar system is usually a rather large place, with several other planets, many moons, and even asteroid belts. All of which are valuable if you can reach them to access their resources. The Drop Ship allows for just this access. So, unless your planet is constantly bombarded into the Stone Age, you should have Industry, and the ability to access those extraplanetary resources and use them to 'grow' your system's economy and industrial base. If you have a planet that can produce things like Power Satellites, and access to drop ships, you can 'seed' the inner solar system with such devices to 'beam' power back to the home planet. And with drop ships, retrieval of damaged, or aging satellites is not really a problem. Other than some really distant Periphery worlds, there is no real reason that ANY planetary system should be 'frontier world' in space. And with drop ships, and even if your planet resembles 'DUNE', you have access to extraplanetary sources of water that can be refined upon the planet, or even just dumped into a caldera to melt naturally, then pumped out as needed to be refined into drinking water.

Please do more on dropships! They are usually the overlooked but critically needed part of the universe. Just like the union class DS named “Phobos” of the grey death legion, like American Express, u cant leave home without it. :)

I always thought it would add a good element to running a Merc unit to add in a dropship as their base. Always had over 4 mechs, so I had to let them have a Union (as it was the only medium sized unit I had info on at the time). I realize years later that it would be quite obscene for an upstart unit to have such a lofty ship. The upkeep alone would be astounding. I feel HBS did a cool job with how they had you acquire a ship. A bit unrealistic that anyone would let you keep such a prize but still.

Depends how big you start i guess. If you can afford several lances, then you can probably afford one Union dropship.

This was more of an overview so I didn't mean to provide artwork for the individual designs. The pictures were more suggestive than anything else. When I talk about individual models, I'll definitely use more appropriate pictures.

11:38 ...wait WHAT? Engineers, earn LESS then the average crew member? HOW?! Their technical expertise ensures there even IS a drop ship to fly! Well, anyway, that gripe aside, great video! And I wouldn't worry about battlemech being cooler, drop ships are just as cool. At least in my book.
