    Those who make fun of combat vehicles have never had to wait thirty minutes for an SRM carrier to stop firing in the Battletech video game.

    A lot of people both in and out of universe laughs at the vehicles in Battlemech compared with the mechs. Heck, I'll fairly admit I did the same back when I got introduced to the universe. ...Usually that stops the first time you get your shiny, pristine Atlas cockpit caved in by a full blast from a Schrek on the other side of the map firing all *three* of its PPCs right at you.

    Ignore vehicles in BT at your own risk. SRM/LRM carriers, Demolisher's and Assault tanks need to be high priority targets. They can put a world of hurt on you. Also, some of the VTOL's mount Guass rifles; if one of those get behind you, pray he's a bad shot.

    Weapon Carrier types might be a neat look. (Demolisher, Hetzer, Shrike, Alacorn and the LRM/SRM Carrier units being good examples of this type.) Alternatively catagorys like 'Cavalry' which primarily refer to VTOL or Hover units. I strongly recommend a look at something called a Regimental Combat Team. Hints of this formation style exist in the old SLDF era writing, but mostly its a much more modern unit theory first cropping up in the late 3050s and early 3060s in the Federated Commonwealth and Fed Suns.

    I don't know anything about battletech lore although it makes sense that factions would have super heavy tanks, medium tanks, aircraft etc but are these units for planet's that don't have access to battle mechs or at least many battle mechs or is it that they are used as fire support for mech strike forces or last of all are they used in guard dutys for civilian areas. As for what tanks and that to cover next I have no idea like I said at the start don't know anything about battletech until today I didn't even know they used tanks still though it makes sense that they would lol. Anyway great video grim unlike the 40k videos you cover which I myself know a lot about as I play the table top with these battletech lore videos I have to say I enjoy these more and that's only because I'm completely new to the battletech universe all I know of it is mech warrior online so these videos are really enjoyable for me so as always grim thanks for your upload. Cheers matey

    Good video, GDN. Galleon Tanks are my cheap go to combat vehicles asides Scorpion Tanks, SRM/LRM Carriers. Cheap, expendable and easily found. Even a swarm of jeeps loaded with MGs or SRM2s are an easy kill but it takes more time for a Mech to wipe them all out. Think piranhas swarming on a lone or trailing mech. Not a pretty sight but that's one less mech in an ambush.

    I think this is where the Battletech universe breaks down for me. These weapon systems have a lower profile, carry the same armament and armor, move quicker, and are cheaper to build. Any decent strategist would be able to use mass firepower (thanks to the lower cost) and various current combined arms tactics to overwhelm any invading battlemech force. I realize battlemechs are by fiat superior to most other ground vehicles, but it really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense if you think about it for too long. It seems like it would almost make more sense if they weren’t in the universe at all, except as troop and equipment transports.

    the only reason battle mechs are superior to vehicles are its logistical footprints. a 60 tons tank required 6 crews plus consumables to keep them going. a 60 tons mech got 1 pilot and food. means more tonnage in the dropship for ammunitions and spare parts (or loots). vehicles still are better for defensive side.

  • @LORDOFDORKNESS42

    @LORDOFDORKNESS42

    @@akiraguy The logistics bit is very true. There's simply not enough drop ships left to make moving entire armies practical on a system wide scale, but mechs pack a lot of fire-power per ton and c-bill. There's also the flexibility and durability angle. A say, Flea, can run recon on the Moon, Mars and Ghobi desert with about equal ease & safety, and still limp back to base for repairs if it's so a smoking torso with half it's head gone and only one functional leg. That jeep or hovercraft? Sure, it's way cheaper and has more weapons per ton... but one good hit by these high-tech weapons and it's smoking scrap, AND they usually have a more narrow range of terrain they can operate efficiently in. Honestly one of my favorite things about Battletech. The combined arms thing. Sure, the mechs are the Kings of the field, the stars... but they're not the untouchable gods of War you see in, say, anime, and can go down to even stuff like mines or even infantry if you're overconfident.

  • @GrimDarkNarrator

    In today's military doctrines, things like Mechs are indeed quite unfeasible simply because of the huge profile their height brings. However, when you factor in logistical issues mentioned by the other commenter, they make a bit more sense. Still, its a fantasy-scifi setting, and most of these, no matter how realistic they might feel, don't always make sense in real life.

    These are all good counterpoints. The breakdown for me isn’t complete. It’s more like an annoying crack in the windshield. It’s no different than when I watch Gundam or even Star Wars. (Seriously, how did the cash strapped Rebel alliance field and maintain so many FOUR-engines space fighters? The costs would’ve been exhorbitant!). It’s a weird balancing act for the creators. You want your stars to be the stars, but not overwhelmingly so. Oh and I forgot to say I would LOVE to see more videos about combat vehicles. Learning more about them can surely only help me better see how they fit into the universe.

    Well grimdark vehicles in the battletech universe are a couple of things depending on what they are. If they are a battle vehicle they are a steel coffin. If they are a troop transport they are a tin of sardines. >->
