    It truly boggles my mind why none of the main actors in this show ever won an Emmy. The ensemble cast of this show was absolutely amazing. The writing was second to none. It deserved a far greater audience than it got. I really hope the planned Sam Esmail continuation planned for Peacock streaming can carry the ball.

    It would have been so easy for them to do that stereotypical 'everyone moves to the volunteer side of the deck' move that so many other movies and shows use. Instead, they did something more believable and nuanced by actually having some people say "No, I'm not volunteering for this suicide mission, sorry" and go to the other side of the deck. Much as I love a sappy 'We're all in this together' moment, it's scenes like this that really help BSG stand apart from the crowd.

    in all fairness, if everyone had volunteered there would be nobody to crew the Galactica, as Adama pointed out. He would then be forced to handpick a group of people to accompany him on the Raptor. In the end, there was sufficient personnel for both.

    @@jeffburnham6611 You misheard the beginning of this clip; Adama was saying that if he wasn't able to get enough volunteers to crew *Galactica*, he would lead a Raptor assault with the volunteers he has. In other words, he is trying to get enough volunteers to take the Galactica on a suicide mission, along with enough crews to man the fighters and Raptors. In the end, he got his wish. Also keep in mind that the Galactica has a massive crew, and even with everyone shown in the clip, this wasn't the full complement. He likely repeated the speech a couple of times.

Olmos was there and at the end, he rose up and told all to do so. So commanding was his tone, we all did, no questions. He then gave us a pep talk on being honourable, good to one another and all. And ended it with "So Say We All" and when the crowd didn't answer with enough conviction, he bellowed it out again: SO SAY WE ALL!. And everyone followed suite. For a fleeting moment, we were all on Galactica with Adama addressing us. It was a beautiful moment. The man embodies Adama in mind, spirit and body!

    I miss these people. To me, the one and only thing that can draw me into a story be that a book, film or a TV show is the characters. I don't care whether they're in outer space, a fantasy world or travelling through time... but if I genuinely care and become invested in the characters, then I'll follow them anywhere. Battlestar Galactica was many wonderful things and quite unique for a TV show at that time, but the thing about it I loved the most were the characters, each and every one of them fully inhabited and realized by the many wonderful actors who portrayed them. And after four seasons and 5 years, you can grow to love them like old friends. And it's scenes like this with that subtle yet hauntingly familiar anthem playing in the background makes me miss them all and want to watch the whole Frakkin thing again. So say we all.

    This is motivating. I've only watched clips of the show but I'm going to get the Battlestar Galactica series on DVD. In real life, 'Chaos' General James Mattis, has this respect and loyalty from me, along with tens of thousands of Marines. I was an armored vehicle gunner in Iraq 2003. I saw General Mattis's vehicle convoy three seperate times during the push to Baghdad and it was motivating to see General Mattis riding in an open hatch of his LAV, wearing the hot, bulky MOPP suit, and face grimy and dark from the road grit; same as the rest of us. I'll add that the battalion and company commanders had charge of the fights once we were engaged, but General Mattis stayed close behind the leading elements of an attack so he could see with his own eyes the shape of the battle. That's my assumption at least. In the April 2003 attack on Al Kut, my vehicle convoy was rolling out to our position when up ahead of me, I saw an LAV and three humvees mounting the roadway and start to intermingle with our vehicles. I intercommed my driver and yelled "what the hell are they doing? cut him off!" My driver accelerated to cut off the LAV from merging in front of my vehicle, and as we passed him my driver called back to me " I think that was General Mattis! " , and we started laughing. We cut off Chaos Actual. A few miles later, Chaos convoy peeled off, my rifle company continued to our blocking position and I have a funny anecdote in the middle of armored vehicles racing towards a fight. I love General Mattis, I love the character Admiral Adama. Hoorah to Admiral Adama that he would fly a Viper along with his pilots. Thanks to all the actors of the show and especially to Edward James Olmos for bringing a living legend leader to life.

    Did you get the DVDs yet? If not, you can watch the show on Hulu. At least, I think it's still there. It had been on Netflix previously. It's a GREAT show, possibly the best show I've ever seen, though not perfect. I could list a dozen flaws off the top of my head, but they don't detract from what makes the show great. What makes it great is that one one level, it's a grand, mind-blowing high concept ... on another level, it's a fairly realistic portrayal of characters who all ring true. Very rarely does someone do something simply because the plot needs them to do it. Every major character is well-fleshed-out, and you can judge them to be good or bad, but they aren't cardboard cutouts. In this show, we see the strongest characters crumble and we see the weakest characters find their strength. We see all hope lost, but the need to continue anyway; we see the full spectrum of human behavior tested in extreme situations. If you haven't watched it yet, you should. It's too bad you've been watching clips first, though, because there are HUGE spoilers in these clips, and it's a show that's best to experience unspoiled if you can.

    Adama's accomplishments as Commander/Admiral since the Fall of the Colonies is nothing short of amazing. From escaping with one ancient ship he rode his luck and used every last play possible to get to this moment, to be in a position to defeat the Cylons who had every thing in their favour at the start of the war. It's been awhile since I watched it but I know the Colony mission was about getting Hera back but it must have been sold to the volunteers that it was a chance to squish the Cylons for good as they wouldn't have had that nuclear Raptor waiting to knock it into the black hole...

    One of the greatest lies of the modern age is our belief that we can do nothing purposeful outside of heroic acts of violence. We can have meaning, purpose, a cause without flashy explosions and self sacrifice. Speak the truth, stand for integrity, be empathetic, have the courage to push back against corruption in your own life. These are things we are told to avoid but they are the very essence of what it means to be a hero in the real world. Fuck capes; be virtuous.

  • @matreyia

    @matreyia

    6 жыл бұрын

    Virtue means nothing if there are no more people to appreciate it. Therefore, the idea/principle of virtue or any valued concept is dependent upon the existence of humanity. So no humans, no life, no virtue. If you manage to be the only survivor in the Universe, no concept of morals, ethics, heroics, sacrifice...literally nothing relating to virtue is of value. Empathy, truth, integrity...etc... they are completely useless without anyone else to apply to. And this is the Truth that is the reason for those people to chose to sacrifice themselves for humanity. Each one is aware, that human values are pointless if they managed to survive alone in the Universe. Literally - Death is better than living alone in the Universe with no values.

The idea of leaving their friends and comrades to go into harms way alone would never even occur to them.
