One of the reasons BSG felt so real is that the FX team kept every scar Galactica accumulated, every piece of damage to her hull, throughout the series. From the damage from the nuke hit in the miniseries to the missing dorsal main battery turret from the end of season 3 on, Galactica accumulated damage that didn't magically disappear at the end of the episode. It lead to a growing sense of dread, especially in the last episodes as it became clear she was well past her service life and was on the verge of failing catastrophically.

I love how Tyrol says they cut corners building her but that she's also endured hits that've felled other battlestars, showcasing exactly how right the designers got it when they built the ship. Just makes me wonder what that Battlestar would've been like if she'd had all her armor plating. I'd wager she'd still be in rough shape, but not about to split in two. That said, Galactica was always the flagship of the colonial fleet in my eyes. Her sheer resilience should be proof enough why she used to be just that.

one thing I wasn't convinced with was their viper/raptor replacement rate. they must've lost at least a few dozen before even meeting pegasus, but in season 2 ep 9 they manage to launch what looks like an entire wing including the modern vipers. it doesn't add up.
@imglidinhere

@@SmokeyBCN They showed a lot of the same recycled scenes of vipers getting wasted/destroyed, but in reality it's best to not pay attention to those scenes, given they don't seem to count those. IIRC a wing is 40 vipers, which is... essentially all that Galactica had.

BEST SHIP IN THE FLEET, SO SAY WE ALL.
As much as I love the Enterprise, I've seen her blown up multiple times and it doesn't get me emotional. It's quick and relatively painless. But Galactica, oh boy. She doesn't get a painless death. She suffers. We see every single injury. We know exactly what she's been through, and survived. She's a tough old girl, but she's still old. Age wears everything down. Towards the end, she could no longer keep quiet. The creaks were her cries of pain. But she sucked it up and gave us one final victory. She broke her back in the process, but she still did it. Shame they didn't save her, and turn her into a museum ship. It had such a colourful history. I know that it was not safe, specifically because it had nuclear reactors, and it would cost way too much to clean it up. In fact, removing the reactors in themselves requires cutting away 1/4 of the ship, which makes a lot of sense why they're not saving the rest. Granted, if they DID turn her into a museum ship, you'd have to wonder whether the ceremony of turning CV-65 would take place just as World War III starts... or Cylons...

One of the best scenes in the show. We all knew (even if we didn't want to accept it) that it would happen. The whole scene is also a metaphor for the show ending. IF I were human." Kirk: "Second star on the right, and straight on till morning." Decommissioning does not necessarily mean scrapping; it's often for a crew change and Kirk notes that in his log. "This ship and her history will soon become the responsibility of another crew."

Don’t forget to set the self-destruct, James Kirk-style! “000-destruct-0” (but lure as many Cylons on board as you can, first! There being a distinct lack of Klingons available, Cylons will have to do.)
Food shortages, water shortages, eating algae to stay alive, pitched space battles and mutiny….and there’s still plenty of booze to have a toast.
Saul didn't understood what Adama meant: "We will send her with style." His original Plan was always to ram Cylon's Colony with Galactica, and when everyone evacuates with Hera in Raptors, Commander would stay on board and manually armed nukes and detonate them, destroying both Galactica and Colony. That was always his plan but mere presence of Laura changed entire plan as they had to improvise along the way using Raptors to launch nukes and use Galactica to escape.

The lore for the Mk II Jupiters (according to BSG: Deadlock) is that they cut corners due to scarce resources, which also left some of the drawbacks of the original frames present in the newer version. Not to mention they had to repair her as fast as possible after surviving atmospheric reentry and slamming into the Caprican Ocean during the First Cylon War.
