Battle of Zama, (202 BCE), victory of the Romans led by Scipio Africanus the Elder over the Carthaginians commanded by Hannibal. The last and decisive battle of the Second Punic War, it effectively ended both Hannibal’s command of Carthaginian forces and also Carthage’s chances to significantly oppose Rome.

This battle convinced me even more of the genious of Hannibal: with a much more tired army and most of his troops recruits, he was able to go so near to victory again. He was defeated only because his cavalry didnt follow the plan and allowed romans cavalry to come back from the chasing. But under tactical point of view, Hannibal outsmarted Scipio again: all Scipio lines were tired while Hannibal had 15 k veterans fresh for the final clash. His defeat isnt due to Scipio "genious" but rather luck and bad timing.

You’re wrong. Hannibal commanded the greatest strongest most experienced army at that time. Scipio however was only given the shamed and exiled survivors of Canae.. and raw recruits. Scipio was a genius.

@@RecoveringAhole no you have "studied" on garbage and I laugh for your lack of knowledge on the matter. Now, read carefully: only his third line were veterans of the italian war (33% were composed of foreign mercenary who werent trained by him on his tactics and the 33% were young recruits), he had elephants but untrained. Scipio had the veterans of Cannae who were trained soldiers and even trained them more in Sicily for a lot of time. The rest of his army where veterans of the war both in Spain and Africa. Where did you get those info? 😂 So in the end, Hannibal had more men but way more untrained. Plus more, if you stop being a fan you would notice that Scipio was tricked again, because none of his tactics played well in Zama. Without Lelius and Massinisa he would have been wiped out. This is something TONS of historians agree with.

Scipio knew how the animal instinct worked! The elephants would never charge on the Roman Walls if gaps are present and the velites luring them by running infront of the beasts can be compared to running in front of an angry dog charging at you, both the elephant and the dog will focus on the running object than anything stationary! We can however expect that some of the Romans in the lines may have shot a few of their javelins but it’s a question of army discipline! If Scipio had the lines ordered not to engage with the elephants they probably would not have engaged with them, considering the time they spent under Scipio’s lead! And multiple sources suggests that the Velites took the blunt of the Elephant charge and finally tacked the beading however incurring huge losses themselves ! Considering the social segregation of the time, Scipio would be more protective of the elite Romans! If the elephants can be lured away from the main lines then why waste the more elite Roman infantry, the Principes and Triarii ranks fighting the elephants?

It’s interesting how apathetic rome was to Carthage. Many years later after Hannibal’s defeat. The politicians in rome decided to invade Carthage even though it was wrecked economically from Hannibal’s blunder and was struggling. Rome invaded and killed / enslaved everyone there and destroyed the capital and thus ended Carthage.

If the Romans didn't win I don't think Carthage would have fallen in the Third Punic War and history as we know it would have been much different. Both sides were fighting for their survival and the future of the world and history itself.

I don't think Carthage would had prevailed even if it ended Winning at Zama. In general in the 2nd Punic war if Hannibal was not there the Romans used to prevail. Simply Hannibal genius could not be everywhere. And Romans would probably simply avoid Hannibal and hit any other Carthaginian army led by any lesser officer.

Certain factors come into play: 1. Loss of more experienced Carthaginian troops 2. Loss of allies 3. Inability of Hannibal to effectively use his military victories for political gains! 4. Internal political instability 5. Gradual decline of Carthaginian economy and military spending 6. Loss of good and trusted commanders in Hannibal’s Army 7. Romans have learnt from their mistakes and became more experienced than ever! With a thirst for revenge the Romans under Scipio gave all in! Ps. I call the Battle of Zama, the Waterloo of that era! Was Wellington much better than Napoleon- debatable, likewise Scipio had the favour of the Gods and it could have very easily been the other way round!
