Battle of Talas 751 - Abbasid - Tang War DOCUMENTARY

There are certain historical battles, which had very little influence immediately but changed things through the centuries. The battle of Talas between the Abbasid Caliphate and the Chinese Tang Empire in 751 is a good example of such a conflict. It changed the religious outlook of Central Asia as Buddhism was slowly pushed out and Islam took its place, was crucial in changing the faith of the Turkic tribes. Later on the Seljuk Turks moved to the West, and that was one of the reasons for the Crusades. Historians also think that this battle was important for the Renaissance, as the papermaking made its way to Europe after it.

I am from China. During this war, a Tang Dynasty soldier named Du Huan was taken prisoner and met many Chinese papermakers, carpenters, and painters in Arabia, and here is my English translation based on ancient Chinese documents. [Record of Chinese Tang Dynasty captives living in Arabia] The name of the king of Arabia was Mamun, and he was born here. Arab women were tall and plump, with beautiful clean clothes and moon-like beauty. The women went out and covered their faces. Silks and pearls from various countries are in abundance in the markets. Camels and donkeys walk through the streets. Vases of Chinese porcelain are offered by merchants to noblemen at festivals. Rice and wheat flour are available here, just like in China. Here grapes are the same size as eggs. There was a love of spices. Weavers, goldsmiths, painters, Fan Shu and Liu Hua from Shaanxi, China, and Lv Li from the east bank of the Yellow River. They also drove with camels. Their horses, said to be born from the mating of a dragon and a horse in the West Sea, have small bellies and long legs, and can run a thousand miles a day. There is also the ostrich, which is 3 meters high and has feet bigger than a camel's hoof, so that a man can ride an ostrich. There are also palm trees, the fruit is like Chinese dates, can be pressed to produce oil, eating dates can prevent disease. The climate in Arabia is warm, no snow and no ice. People often suffered from malaria, and within a year, half of those who got sick would die. Arabia conquered more than 50 countries and sent troops to defend them. The westernmost part of the Arabian territory reached the Black Sea.

Battle of Talas long-lasting effects: 1. Caused Buddhism to decline in the area and Islam to spread among the dominant Turk population, changing the religous and political demographics of a thousand square mile region. 2. The lack of land route for Buddhists leads to a divergence in the religion in India and China, leading to two very different branches being formed. 3. The Islamicist Turks lead to the Seljuk Empire, which took Jerusalem and triggered the crusades. 4. Another Turkic peoples, the Ottomans, conquered the Eastern Roman Empire and created one of the largest empires in the world across three different continents. 5. We are still feeling the effects of THAT empire collapsing down to the present day in the Middle East. But most importantly..... pApER sPReAd to eUrOPe.

I learned this battle in school in China. Arabian got the paper making technology from captured workers in Chinese army. There is one Chinese captive whose name is Du huan. He stayed in middle East for about 10 years and finally returned to China. He wrote a book about his experience but unfortunately the book was lost in history, but some of its contents were found in other books. It says he was captured in Talas and forced to join the Arabian army to fight in North Africa. He was allowed to return to home in 761, he then got on board a boat in Red sea and went back to Guangzhou, China via Srilanka.

One of the major reason of why the Chinese Tang Dynasty and Arabic empire were hostile towards each other was because the Arabs invaded the Persians which was allied with China, Tang and Persia had great relations. After the Persian empire was destroyed, the Persian prince fled to China for asylum.

Having looked it up, the reasons for the battle may have been far simpler with the Sassanid royalty living in Chang'an being a convenient excuse/propaganda. The Umayyads deposed a local ruler in the region which resulted in a Tang response. The Tang sent an army to reinstate their vassal and succeeded, keeping several garrisons nearby to keep an eye on things. The Abassids then overthrew the Umayyads and wanted to consolidate the formers territories, cue confrontation.

No, they didin't, the Abbasids never extended that far, in fact the Tang and Abbadis quickly became allies afterwards. The current state of Tarim Basin was done by the Karakanid Turks who waged a jihad and took over the region then forcefully converted the locals to Islam. Google it

M Learn more history before making biased comments. Was China ruled by other ethnicities other than Han for the most part of the history? Come on, from Xia(夏) or Shang (商)to modern PRC. China was only partially ruled in the northern area by minorities in the period of five barbaric uprising(五胡乱华), then Liao(辽) and Jin(金) as well as defeated Japan. Only Mongols and Manchurian/Jurchens managed to take complete control of China in Yuan(元) and Qing dynasties(清). Xiongnu(匈奴), Gokturks(突厥汗国), Uyghur(畏兀儿;回鹘)Oirat(瓦剌), and Zungaria(准噶尔) were influential nomadic regimes at the border, but they never managed to establish a recognized dynasty in Chinese heartland. Thus, the combined history of China under non-Han Chinese rule only count for about 1000 years. What about the other 3000 to 4000 years? It's still under the control of Han Chinese. If you count total control of China, only Mongols and Jurchens succeeded once respectively, and they were all driven back by Han in their demises. The other major dynasties in Chinese history like Qin(秦), Han(汉), Jin(晋), Song(宋) and Ming(明) are completely ruled by Han Chinese. While Sui(隋) and Tang(唐)are paternally Han ethnicities and use pedigree of their fathers' families instead of their maternal lineages that contain Proto-Mongolic/Turkic/Caucasian genes. Just like you won't describe the kingdom of France is ruled by Austrian or Habsburg if they have mothers or queens from the House of Habsburg. Last but not the least, where's your so-called East Turkestan? It only managed to survive in a short period of time during the turmoil of late Qing dynasty or ROC and surrendered quickly as General Zuo Zongtang (Remember the taste/fear of General Tso's chicken? It's named after him) and General Wang Zhen marched back to Xinjiang. Today, there's only Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, but no such East Turkestan. Turkic ethnicities are living better and enjoy greater gender equality in modern China than under the rule of East Turkestan separatists.

The Tibetan Plateau stands over 4.5 kilometres above sea level and is surrounded by imposing mountain ranges that harbour the world's two highest summits, Mount Everest and K2. Marching an army of conquest in to this region with thoughts of victory is a fool's errand. The geography of the nation of Switzerland has much of the same defensive advantages, however not the same religious and political significance. The Tibetan Plateau is a natural fortress that any sane person would fear to attack. This video is an epic revelation to my former self. Great work KaG, Bravo.

Tibet was always destined to be a state influenced by one of their powerfull neighbours, China or India, just happened that the former was the winning side.

One empire after the next came into fruition; Seljuk Turks, Mamluk Empire, Khilji Dynasty etc. This battle almost breathed a new life into the tribal Turks of central asia. @@user-iv2dx9ps9y The Turkic people are a diverse bunch. There are those in central asia, there are also those from the caucuses region as you said, we've had them in medieval India as well. Mamluks were slave soldiers (not like americas idea of slaves doe lol), a lot of them were of turkic origins. Kazakstanis for example are of turkic descent and live in the Caucasus region. And you're right, the turks and arabs should have got a long but they allowed themselves to be played by the British. The British played old divide and conquer strategy; pit the Muslims against each other, destroyed the caliphate and walked off as the winner.

The Chinese emperor was married to Peroz’s sister and pledged to restore him to his throne. Peroz fight many battles as a commander of the Tang armies. However China withdrew from Central Asia after the An Lushan Rebellion of 755-763 wiped out a quarter of its population. On his death bed Peroz told his people they can never go home and they are to become Chinese. For centuries after his death Peroz’s fiefdom in China was known as The Realm of the Western King.

Hey I have a suggestion about the emblems for Chinese nations, but it’s just my opinion so u can disagree as much as u want. I understand that as China did not use national banners in the same way as the west, u use the name of the dynasty in an emblem, although sometimes there was never that exact emblem in use. Instead of using the kaishu 楷书calligraphy font for the characters, you could use the Seal Script (篆体字 zhuantizi)which we’re used on seals and stamps. Sometimes this font was used on banners. It could make the emblems/icons for Chinese armies or nations in your maps more authentic
