This was the final video (at least in chronological order) of our collaboration mini-series about "Caesar's civil war", for me personally it was a great trip and of course my initiation into making videos for a really wide audience and it was all because of my good friend Mago and his channel "HistoryMarche". Side notes: 1) The recreation of this campaign was probably my most difficult task to date, the main source that I used to piece everything together was "De Bello Hispanico" and in terms of clarity it leaves much to be desired, the position of the cities are probably not exactly on point and for some cities specifically, for eg Munda, the locations are uncertain and still debated. So I really had little to work with and I really tried my best to reconcile the description with the map, I even had to consult some really old maps that I managed to find in order to recreate the positioning of each city, so slight miss-placements are to be expected. To my knowledge, it is the most extensive recreation of the campaign. 2) After the Pompeians broke there are some mentions of atrocities that were committed by the Caesarians, with dead Pompeians being used to fill ditches and heads stuck on pikes outside the walls of Munda. 3) Munda was indeed the largest battle in terms of scale, even though on paper Thapsus was equally large, a larger portion of Caesarians and Optimates were occupied in their respective fortifications during the battle of Thapsus

@@anderstopansson Thats such a great idea, it is like within my top priorities, the MAIN problem with the Dacian campaigns of Trajan is that they are so poorly recorded, for eg Trajan wrote an account of his campaign in the same style with Caesars commentaries, it was called "De Bello Dacico", but unfortunately for us history lovers it is LOST... i always wished that it could somehow miraculously be recovered or found, maybe somewhere in the Vatican libraries, well who knows. But as the things are, there is not much to work with, despite the sourcing problems though i DO have an ambitious plan, i will at some point try to recreate the campaign using Trajans column and translate it into a series or a detailed animated video, we can certainly collaborate with my friend Mago and make something in depth about it. It wont be an exact and historically accurate recreation of what exactly happened, but it is going to be based on our most extensive source for the campaign, that is the column.

Credit must be given to Pompeii on paper he had it won, he had bigger army and he played Caesars game of getting a good position and he stuck to his game plan. Unfortunately for him he was Pompeii and not Caesar.

Yeah, I was surprised they didn't talk about his decorated Caesarean past. Historia Civilis highlights his Gallic military history in his vids about Caesar. Absolutely love that Labienus was as challenging an opponent as he was a good ally to Caesar.

Caeser: You was the Second in comand! It was said you would destroy the optimates, not join them. You were to bring reforms to Rome, not throw It into chaos.

They were more than employees. They weren't only prepared to fight they couldn't wait. It's crazy to think about men knowing they're about to be in the middle of carnage being so eager.

I've read Caesar's commentaries many many times, but this video series really makes them come alive, really well done. Love it

with everything going on, this is the best distraction that can happen.

The 10th Legion should have been brushed aside very easily but when you face a battle hardened legion like this one, it's much easier said than done. If someone would do a list of the most hardcore units of all time, the 10th Legion should be included there without a shadow of a doubt.

@@opperturk124 You almost right but ... Labienus remembered very well what happened at Pharsalus with the cavalry. Secondly, he knew well the Tenth and veterans of some other understrength hardened veterans legions of that side (If my memory goes well, also Eight and Ninth) and he suspected bad things could happen his cavalry troops.

The 10th Legion were so freaking amazing. The only other military force i love more then the 10th are the Silver Shields from Alexanders legendary 10 year campaign.

that guy who shouted "BE QUIET!" sure loves walking in the fog for relaxation. no wars, no sieges, nothing. just chillin' with his caesarian homies.

I remember Caesar quote something like this in his account: "I had fought many times for victory, but at Munda, I fought for my life"

"Halt! Identify yourself!" Caeserian: "Oh be quiet, we're trying to capture the walls." "Oh okay." Caesarian: "...f*** me, I can't believe that worked. That's for the record."

I really appreciate the way you guys take time to lay out the strategic background to any given battle. Looking at the skirmishes and maneuvers leading up to the battle gives so much context to the way things play out in the actual battle itself, and educates us all the more fully for it. I really love the graphic and animations on these videos, imagine playing a strategy simulation game with these humble and charming graphics, one that is more focussed on strategical and tactical mechanics than graphics.

Biased Historia Civilis said this battle was a brute force victory by Caesar. They went into no detail on the tactics involved. Hats off again, my friend. Keep making these amazing documentaries :')

For Historia Civilis, Labienus died in the battle field and then the army routed. Caesar even buried him in that field. For History Marche, the army thought labienus had retreated and then they routed.

@@cassiofficial Yep. Caesar's decision to split up the cavalry to let one contingent attack the camp was genius. Not only did it prevent Labienus from being able to assist the pompeiian left flank, it also gave him no option but to pursue the cavalry to make it appear as though he's withdrawing. Labienus sadly took the bait

@@cassiofficial According to "De bello Hispanico" the army thought the cavalry was retreating (the cavalry was led by Labienus) and this caused the final rout. Labienus was probably killed at some point during the pursuit.

I really like the way this channel covers history and battles. It's not just event x y z. The thought process, the decision-making, is explained too.

Have to say that was a gloriously brilliant and fantastically enjoyable in-depth look at the major battles of Caesar's civil war, show-casing exactly how and why, Caeser became master of the roman republic and nearly its first king/emperor if not for his assassination. Only quip I have is that a video on the Battle of Ilerda from the first Spanish campaign of 49BC is missing from this great series, which was the first major military campaign and confrontation of said war.

This was a fun n interesting series on Caesar's battle's fought during the Roman Civil War. And I enjoyed it immensely. Nice job to whoever made this possible.

I like how Caesar do alot of fortification which is sadly lost alot in the medieval era. Caesar is realy a Fortification Master.

Little known fact: the Optimates followed the religion of Optimism, with their god Optimist Prime. Priests of Optimism were known as Optimistics or simply, Optimists.

You should definitely make a shorts about munda. When the Legio X starts pushing back the pompeians back uphill. I always get goosebumps when i rewatch that moment ! :D

Gnaeus's brother Sextus managed to escape this battle while his older brother was killed during the retreat. Sextus would live on for another decade and be a thorn to Caesar's successors Octavian and Anthony. He managed to outlast even Brutus and Cassius by keeping the island of Sicily independent for a time protected by his navy. Although he would eventually be captured and executed by Anthony.

It's like they had something against poopin in the same camp twice...

While Caesar's decision to attack frontally Pompey's high ground seemed foolhardy initially, I think it demonstrated his ability to open up and exploit new opportunities created by his determined push. In the midst of the chaos of the fight, Caesar saw an opportunity (opened by his battle-hardened veterans) and seized it by ordering an attack on Pompey's right flank.

Somebody didn't do their homework because they just completely left out Caesar's old second in command. He actually controlled a good chunk of the army and yet only once is he mentioned.

Historia civilis makes labienus appear much more significant than he actually was in the sources

There is an author named Stephen Dando-Collins who has written a series of books based on the history of Roman Legions. They are all a great read. He has one named Caesars Legion which is a history of the Tenth. These were some extremely tough men who’s loyalty to Caesar was unwavering.

Men of the Tenth were actually all between 33-36 yrs old, they had all been conscripted at the ages of 17-20, already serving for almost 17 yrs at the battle of Munda.

How come you didn't mention what happened after the battle of Munda? The remnants of the losing army retreated to the city but what then? Did they surrender? Did they kill their leader the Pompean? No info what so ever. But in general a good video never the less! Just a little more on the aftermath of the battle next time please.

Well that's because the video was already around 25minutes long, which is already quite large for an animated video that has to be release within a specific time-frame, of course we can consider making a video that will specifically cover the aftermath and the mop up operations. One thing that i could have included indeed is a call out with some brief description of what happened after the battle of Munda besides Caesar winning.

In the aftermath, Caesar continued his campaign in order to subdue the remaining hotspots of resistance; the city of Munda fell after a brief siege. Titus Labienus was killed during the battle, Gnaeus Pompeius perished in April 45 BC fighting Caesarian detachments and his brother Sextus Pompeius escaped to the island of Sicily, turning to piracy and raiding the coastal regions and cities before being vanquished by Marcus Agrippa in the 30s BC.

@@hocestbellumchannel if the purpose of the video is to educate, then who cares how long it is? All of us who watch it want to be educated. If animating is a chore, then just put up an image and have the narration tell the story. It wouldn't take that much effort and anyone who's watched the first 25 minutes will watch the final bit so that they know the entire story.

Yes, Munda was sieged and easily taken the same day as the Pompeians had suffered severe losses and handled it over. Labienus had died previously in the rout but the Pompeian Army offered little to no resistance as they now acknowledged their defeat. Gnaeus and Sextus managed to escape to Cordova but now hardly anyone would help their cause and they failed to ignite a new revolt. Gnaeus was eventually captured and killed not even a month after the battle. Sextus, on the other hand, had a brilliant career. He managed to escape Caesar’s power for a year by retreating to Sicily (not that Caesar was so keen on hunting him down) and benefitted hugely from Caesar’s murder just 1 year after the Battle of Munda. In the first stages after Caesar’s death, the pro Republican faction took over the politics in the city and inspired by Cicero, they moved back to the Status Quo. In this contest Sextus negotiated with Lepidus (who received the Spanish province following this new arrangement) that he would forever turn down every ambition on Spain in change for refunding of the goods taken from his father Pompey. His friendly attitude towards the Senate and the new power distribution resulted in him being appointed by the Senate as the Prefect of the Fleet in the Western Mediterranean in 43 BC. In the same year though, the political situation changed as the 2nd triumvirate (Octavian, Mark Anthony and Lepidus) took over more and more power. A persecution began towards the ones who had killed Caesar (to which the Senate had given the Amnesty following Cicero’s advices) and the sustainers of the Republic and the Senate in general. Among them Cicero himself, who was killed in his own villa in December of 43 BC. Among the enemies of the Triumvirate was Sextus too. He managed to evade the persecution by gathering his powerful fleet and taking over Sicily, Corse and Sardinia in 42 BC. From there he started raiding Octavian and Anthony’s lands. His activity didn’t stop neither when Octavian and Anthony succeeded in eliminating Brutus and Cassius, the last remaining Caesar’s murderers in 42 BC. They eventually tried to crash him after the Battle of Philippi, but failed, and his co-operation with Lepidus (together with Lepidus not taking part in the Philippi battle) was actually the reason for Lepidus’s marginalization from the Triumvirate which resulting in him getting the smallest share of the Empire (just Northern Africa). Sextus’ grip over the seas, strengthened by his Lepidus’s support, was actually so powerful that Anthony and Octavian had to offer terms to him and sign a peace treaty (39 BC) in order to secure the sea front before the preparation of Anthony’s campaign on the Eastern front against the Parthians. Said treaty provided that Sextus would be recognized as the ruler of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and the Greek Peloponnese, that his followers (mainly persecuted by the Octavian and Anthony who had seeked shelter in safe Pompey’s Army) would be given amnesty and that he would become a Consul after 35 BC. In turn he had to stop raiding the coasts of Octavian’s dominion and handle half of his fleet. None of these conditions were respected from either side, resulting in a new all out war between Sextus and Octavian while Anthony campaigned and the East and still gave Octavian some support. After inflicting major losses to Octavian’s fleet in the battle of the Strait of Messina in 38 BC, Sextus suffered a tremendous and decisive blow in the Battle of Naulochus in 36 BC which resulted in his fleet being completely wiped out. Sextus escaped to the East where he was captured and killed by Anthony’s officers. Octavian annexed the Isles and proceeded to annex Lepidus’s Northern Africa the following year with the excuse of him having supported Sextus, thus resulting in the end of the Triumvirate and the division of the whole Empire into a Western side to Octavian, and an Eastern side to Anthony. Sextus actually managed to outlive Caesar of 8 years while gathering all the Republicans that were gradually being defeated elsewhere in the Empire by Octavian and Anthony and making a Stand to Octavian’s power, the last stand of the Pompeian Party, being the last civil war Octavian faced before shutting down the other 2 Triumvirates and taking over the whole Empire.
