They weren't just trusting on their own strength, but calling out to their Lord and Saviour for His strength in this battle. It's something I need to do more of in this battle we call Life.

👑King Baldwin IV and the Battle of Montgisard 1177⚔🛡🏇 is One of my most fav battles of the ✠ Crusades ✠

Baldwin was able to defeat a larger force in detail, like Napoleon

I approve of this podcast. I love the account of William of Tyre, it is impressive! The differences in the Muslim accounts seems to indicate the SOP of excuse making and pulling the "will if Allah" excuse card instead of criticism of poor tactics, mistakes, or bad discipline.

@@knightmare216, several, based on translational standards (verbatim or conceptual), canonical book lists (deuterocanon, Pharisee canon, or other), and remember that the Bible is a COLLECTION OF BOOKS, not a succinct single text. The Bible's authority tests on the authority of the Catholic Church.

To give justice to William of Tyre - in his description, as contrary to what Malcolm Barber said in his "The Crusader States", William does NOT claim that Baldwin actually faced 26 thousand Muslims with his meagre Christian force at Montgisard. William only states that: (9:27) "the forces were very unequal" he later investigated the numbers of troops that Saladin crossed the borders with and very clearly says: (9:50) "26 thousand light-armed cavalry , in addition to others mounted on camels and other beasts of burden, entered our territory." and then William proceeds to give more detailed description of the exact make-up of that force. Mr Barber says: (21:35) "Baldwin's army was heavily outnumbered, even though William's figure of 375 knights opposed to 26 thousand light cavalry, a 1000 of whom were Saladin's personal Mamluks, cannot be taken seriously". Well, no one takes this seriously because this is NOT what William of Tyre said. This is a very serious misreading of William's account by Mr Barber and I must say that it is most disappointing and makes me question the validity of his whole book. I would be very reluctant now to purchase a copy of "The Crusader States" knowing that Mr Barber fails so spectacularly at actually understanding what he reads in his sources. As to the number of wounded treated by the Hospitaliers and later on in Jerusalem itself we must remember that these were not necessarily only the casualties of Montgisard but possibly of the campaign of plunder and raiding envisaged on Jerusalem by Saladin. Those Muslim troops that were busy pillaging and burning and were too late to join the battle itself were still to be accounted for and fought. They were most likely disorganised but they were not defenceless at least not in the first hours or possibly even days from the battle.

Like what happened in the red sea in Moses time, Montgisard reminded us that nothing is impossible to God. In my years of existence, I have seen "very few" 16 year olds who had minds and spirit of an experienced adult. So it would not be surprising if the tactics in the Montgisard battle could have been also Baldwin's idea. Even his tutor William of Tyre wrote in his memoirs about the teenage leper king's intelligence. With consultations with his knight templar leaders of course. He was still the king after all

One topic I believe would be very good is trying to explain the greatest differences in military tactics and fighting style between Christians and muslims (Not that all of the same religion fight the same) Also, what were the advantages of muslims that helped them conquer so much and how did the christians managed to gain strength to reconquer

Were the Byzantines allies or enemies on the Crusaders?

AT0M 80M8 in different crusades they’ve been both. One of the reasons the first crusade was called was because the Byzantines were under attack I believe from the Seljuk Turks. But in the fourth crusade while the crusaders we’re supposed to try and recapture Jerusalem, they ended up going to Constantinople. I can’t remember the full reason as to why, but the crusaders had sacked the Byzantine capital. So the Byzantines in a sense have been both.
