I am an American Civil War buff and I compete in target shooting with replicas of Civil War rifles and revolvers as part of the North-South Skirmish Ass'n. The main problem I have with this film is that the bullet hits do not splatter nearly enough blood. The Danish Tapriffel rifle was, to the best of my research efforts, a .66 caliber muzzle loading rifle and the Prussian Dreyse needle-gun was .61 caliber. The Dreyse needle-gun fired an acorn-shaped bullet at 1000 ft/sec, pushed by 75 grains of black powder. So if anything it hit harder than the American and British muzzle-loaders that were used in the Civil War (.577 caliber pushed by 60 grains of black powder). And it is documented that the wounds from Springfield and Enfield rifles were horrendous.

In Denmark we learn we learn that the German rifle was better because it was faster to relaod, and the Danish forces just got slaughtered, about the blood i have no idea. but was the Danish officers whom meant the slower reload would result in much better aim.

@@Jager_jaafoure One of the reason why Denmark lost was because they used muskets, which was frontloaded. In most cases it also meant you had to stand to load the gun. The prussian breachhload could be loaded twice as fast and be done in cover. Another reason was also the prussians use of breach loaded long range artillery, which the dane sufflered heavily against. Only against the Austrians could the danish fight om even terms.

What really happened is that the danish army was unprepared for war due to a collection of incompetent politicians making it possible for Prussia to set up a war of liberation to kick off its ambitions. Even so Danish forces due to a competent commander, De Meza, realized the danger it was in at the defensive "Dannevirke line" where it skillfully retreated before becoming a victim of Prussian maneuver warfare (encirclement). The position it retreated to was at Dybbøl and not suited for what was to come. While the initial phase of the siege did not cause much concern from the danes perspective this all changed when the Prussian state of the art rifled artililery howtizers had been deployed putting the position under intense and sustained bombardement. In fact in the history of war it was perhaps the most intense bombardment the world had seen, ground breaking like what had been seen from the British during the battle of Copenhagen of 1810. Slowly but surely the danish positions where reduced, some to the point that they were nothing but unstructured dirt. While the Prussians dug their trenches as close as 200-300 meters the artillery pounded eventually leading to the bulk of the danish forces sheltering 200m behind the main position which itself was mainly manned by artillerymen. Denmark had no weapons that could retaliate the Prussian artillery and just had to sit there and take it - the town, and the area, was reduced to rubble. After the most intense bombardement an eerie quite calm came to pass only to be replaced by the sound of cannon, this time Danish, being shot at the first wave of 10.000 Prussian infantery storming towards the positions. Immediately, the danish forces ran forward as well and a race to the main position was on. Meanwhile, few were in the main position from where they were able to fire cannon with grapeshot at the advancing forces for a brief time wrecking havoc on the attacker. There was nothing that could be done to hold the main positions which fell one after the other in 3-10 minutes of fighting. They had been pounded into submission and could hardly be manned, the few danes that made it into position before the Prussians overran them where negligable. What you see in the clip here, is a brigade of danish troops (around 3000) trying to push up from a position 1000 meters behind the main lines only to encounter the Prussians forming firing chains after taking the positions which will not be broken as we are talking a first wave of 10000 men taking less that 10% casualties against a 3000 man counter attack advancing in the open which only succeeded in blunting the most eager Prussians who had run to far ahead of their main force probably thinking noone would be crazy enough to counterattack. Dybbøl is a story about how Denmark becomes a true minor nation in Europe. It is an example of inept politicians being tricked into a war they cannot win while still insisting to fight it. It is the story of a commander removed from his position, in spite of saving the entire Danish army from encirclement and a story of his replacement following orders blindly not doing the same when it had been prudent at Dybbøl. Also, it is the beginning of the German nation that would eventually be formed out of the actions of Prussia and Bismarck, culminating in the invasion of France in 1870-71 which solidified its claim to exist. So no - it was not the needle gun that won the battle. It has just become a symbol of it. A convenient excuse perhaps. The battle was lost the moment politicians took charge of the military without understanding its complexities. They stupidly refused an otherwise gracious offering of peace from Bismarck, leading to even stricter terms being imposed after another devastating battle on the island of Als later in the war. The danish military strategy had been, to fight a series of retreating battles up along the length ofJutland, using its superior navy to harass the enemy hinterland by attacking supply lines and protecting Funen and Zealand from naval invasions. This was never succesfully executed, while some attempts where made it was a complex strategy that might have done better had there been more time to prepare. Also, do keep in mind, Denmark is fighting not just Prussia, but also Austria. Perhaps Denmark could have won this or at least had peace on more favorite terms if it was not for all the political mistakes. Had that happened, the world might have looked completely different today.

@@historycollector1533 Probably yes but it was just a mistake in a string of them. Wars are generally lost or won before they are fought and that credit goes to the politicians - and while the army could have performed better it is difficult to imagine a winning strategy here. The Prussians and Austrians were technologically superior to Denmark on land and within just a few decades would be it at sea as well. If you ever get the chance to visit Vienna you must go see the Museum of Military history to get an idea of how massive just the Austrian military complex was (and the Austrians were bested by the Prussians/Germans eventually). This was all pre WW1 consolidation of the major European powers seting up the arms race for the first world war.

Over 700 danish death and over 987 wounded plus 103 missing and over 2000 captured, prussian losses. 263 kill and less 900 wounded and sick. Besides half prussian were militia poorly trained,so let's say that prussian perform far better and kick ass on Danish. Funny movie portray as if was all the way around. Danish been in defensive position could use their type musket far better than attacking prussian as it give not much advantage to prussian on the move and less accurate ,specially been a fact half or more were militia.

@@theregulator9207 "Nothing to be proud of" Do you know anything about Prussia's rise to power in the 17th and 18th century? I would like to see Denmark 1v3 Austria, France and Russia. Now let's tackle that 1864 to 1945. As a result of the illegal annexation of Schleswig, the war began so Danish agression. Next France declared war ON Prussia in 1870. Then Germany was at (relative) peace until 1914 and milions died on every side and yes Germany (not Prussia anymore) did commit war crimes, just as in ww2. But the most fun part is, even after all the territorial loss, Germany is the economic powerhouse of Europe. I also like how you blame an entire nation for war crimes that were commited after the nation ceased to exist, perfect logic/10. Nothing wrong with liking your country go right ahead, but try to be more nuanced when you start throwing around terms such as killing millions etc. If you want to take this back further, Danish vikings slaughtered and robbed so many people all over Europe, and that happened for 250+ years straight. We can all play the game where we acuse others of atrocities. I'm from the Netherlands and we have a dark colonial history involving slave trade and exploitation and massacaring of innocent civilians, which I condemn but I acknowledge it. Just as Germany acknowledges what they did, which continues to baffles me since many other governments like to refrain from shedding light on their dark pages. TL:DR Germany has a lot to be proud of and every country, including yours, has done evil stuff only Germany seems to embrace it and move on.

@@maxvanas32 "As a result of the illegal annexation of Schleswig, the war began so Danish agression" Your lack of historical knowledge is huge ! Slesvig has been danish for centuries … It was under the Danish king and laws. And you totally forget that Bismarck used manipulation and lies, to force the wars. In 1863 he told the danish goverment that Preussen did not have any interventions, against the "November" law around Selsvig. He set up a devious trap, he knew wut secure a quick war, against an easy prey. In reality where the war of 1864 just another Bismarck trick. He needed the war, to turn the populations ever louder demand for democracy, away. In the war with france he altered the content of the kings telegram to France, into some thing he knew wut provoke the french into war …. Germany shut have been disovled, as a nation after WW2. I dont see Germany as a economic powerhouse, i see a Germany who continues to seek the power over Europe, inside the EU. Fortunately many Danes wants to leave the EU, as England did. And many danes sure like to see the border being pushed back, to its original place at the river outside Hamburg again. What your type is another "Preussian" attempt to justifie the warmonger attitude, at the cost of millions of life's in Europe.
