1864 Tv Series - The Battle Sequence - Denmark vs Prussia (Edit)

This is a fan edit of the climatic battle in the danish tv series 1864. The sequence shows the battle between Denmark and Prussia. NOTE: This is just an edit, that I made by myself, which is a shortened version of the battle. The full length of the battle in the series is over 30 min. long.

Back in 2013, I, along with most of my friends in the Royal Danish Lifeguard, were offered roles in this series. Sadly, i had to decline the offer, since i couldn't find the time to take part in shooting the scenes. I'm sure it would have been an awesome experience though, regardless of the quality of the show.

You missed on quite a lot. It was a craziest half a year I have been through. Don't get me wrong, it was hell. Most of the production took place durring summer. The temperatures were over 30°C and we suffered in the trenches quite a lot. Yet, here I am, 7 years later, still remembering the most of the scenes we made.

This Danish movie is pretty + good honest What people dont realize the Danish Army was actually slightly bigger than Prussia's at the time and on top of this Denmark had a real Navy, which Prussia mostly lacked. At the time Denmark was considered one of the preeminent military powers of Northern Europe. And they (thought) they had England as an ally and so that it would all be a cakewalk. So they recklessly provoked a war with Pussia by breaking the Schleswig treaty ( which stipulated they could not abuse the german population of that province and forced them to not speak german etc) and sent provocative missives to the Prussia King. But the Prussians had made quite a few improvements to the firepower of thier Army and the effectiveness of theirs leadership, so they were quite confident and did not mind a Danish attack at all since they ere eager to use their expensive military to improve their standing in Europe and among the german states. Also, as the Prussians expected, England abandoned the Danes, since they were the ones who broke the treaty and on top of that the Austrians sent generous help to the Prussians. The Danish movie is quite honest about all these things. Ultimately the war was decided by Prussian artillery which was quite superior and so more than made up that Denmark's military was slightly larger. Prussian and Austrian "Special Forces" (for the time) the Deaths head Hussars also contributed out of proportion to their numbers. On top of that the Prussians had the better generalship and staffs and so in the end it was a crushing defeat for the Danes. Denmark would never again be considered a powerful country in Europe.

@Dave G You know the Danes have been known to be extraoridinairy soldier ever since the fall of the western Roman empire, right? Ever heard of some people called Vikings? The danes certainly aren't crybabies, and neither are the germans. Both sides fought with bravery and courage, but the Germans simply outnumbered the danes, and danish politicians didn't want to spend money on upgrading their weaponry, so the Germans had the upper hand in equipment and manpower... but not in courage and confidence.

The Danish military did want to build fortifications by our border towards germany but they were not allowed. Our politicians were afraid that Hitler would see it as an aggression and use it as a reason to attack us (Which he ended up doing anyways). Besides why would we anger the germans by fighting to send the rest of our troops to norway? That does not make any strategical sense. If we were to fight in norway we should have put the whole army up there before an invasion so germany wouldnt bomb the whole of denmark. The most logical thing to do had we chosen to stay and hold our grounds. We should have build trenches and bunkers along the whole border and fortify our biggest harbors incase of a naval invasion. Recruit more soldiers leading up to (We barely had an army at the time, again because we feared hitler would see it as an aggression). After this we should have had plans with the british and norwegians and hopefully sweden to heelp us defend and push into germany from the danish border which down the line could have shortened the whole war since were as close to berlin as we are. Hitler expected the naval invasion from america and britain to arrive in Jutland (Danish west coast) and ended up fortifying the whole coast, and we could have beaten him to it with the allies assistance, 50k or so troops pushing down from jutland could have made a world of difference

@@MadsenTheDane I Highly doubt the the British would help you Danes in WW2. The British did nothing to help the Pole when the Germans invaded Poland despite England and Poland having a Self-Defense Treaty where the British would fight along with the Poles but chose to do nothing at all. The British used Poland as bait for Hitler to declare war on Poland since Hitler sent multiple treaties to the Polish official to give up Port city of Danzig to Germany so Germany can unite with East Prussia since in East Prussia spoke German but the British Government was telling the Polish officials to reject anything Hitler was offering to them. The British didnt care if they get in time to support there allies or not since it wasnt effecting them then after WW2 Eastern Europe and Poland was given to Stalin by USA and England.

Too bad the director of the movie had to make it some weird fan-fic, with the Danes abusing gypsies for fun, two brothers from a conservative upbringing deciding to share a GF, jedi mind tricks and outright magic later in the series, not to mention the poor little Prussian soldiers who never wanted war and only wanted to read Karl Marx and preach peace and harmony (except for the hussars I guess). This had the budget, the know-how (several prominent Danish historians helped out) and outright manpower (tons of volunteers, reenachment groups, extras, etc.) to be absolutely fantastic... But then after the final episodes, everyone goes: What the actual fuck!? (Who didn't already) and the director just says "I wanted to do my own take on the events" Dude, you were fucking hired by national TV to make a historical TV-series about one of the most well-known battles in Danish history! Fuck me man, it still annoys me endlessly, especially because you can see so many sparks of greatness throughout, that are just destroyed later or diminished because of what came before.

Absolutely agree. It could have been an epic story and instead it's full of irrelevant nonsense. The whole modern side story should never have been included and when i saw the first episode and realized it was going to be some cliche story about a girl becoming "good" in the modern times, my heart just sank. Absolute shit this tv series..

Well in case it had slipped your mind. A lot of these young men grew up next door to one another. Thats why the prussian soldier is refering to the danes as his friends and he doesnt want to fight them. A lot of the danes felt the same way. But when you are called upon to fight for your motherland. Then you do so. Especially in the 19th..

A modernisation would have been lots of cost, and fourty years later, the fortifications would have been outdated. See fortresses Rastatt and Ulm, build/ modernized in 1840s, outdated ( progress in artillry) arround 1890. The knowledge was still there in theory and papers, but real practice was rare.
