🚩 On a late November morning in the year 1095, the rousing sermon of Pope Urban II reverberated across Europe. Thousands of knights and ordinary people took the cross and marched East. Over the next two hundred years the Christian armies attempted to recover Palestine from Islamic rule. But conquering these lands was easier than keeping them. What were the strategic methods employed by the Crusader states to keep hold of the Holy Land?

Lol crusaders got destroyed by Saladin no Turks he was Arab. Until they Turk killed the Arab and took it from themselves off course until the British came along and took all the whole for themselves and gave it to the Jewish population now today the holy land is ours for now until forever. Just try to get it if you can 🤣 we gonna bomb you all The crusades was finish when Churchill of England said today the crusade is over and declared Israel a country and the Rothschild were supporting this!

Question to HistoryMarche: Will you be doing a video on the strategy of the Mamluk sultan Baybars? It was Baybars who simultaneously both stopped the Mongol invasion of the western half of the middle east whilst wiping out the last remnants of the Crusader states through the astute construction of road networks, bridges and placement of spies. Amtai's book ('Mongol and Mamlukes'?) is an excellent reference for this period.

I believe the goal of the 2nd Crusade was Damascus which would have closed of the Syrian landbridge to the Muslims had it succeeded. The crusaders would only have to worry about attacks from the North(Iraq) and south(Egypt) if they took Damascus. Richard Lionheart also believed that taking Cairo was a far better goal than Jerusalem since taking Cairo would cripple the Mamluk's powerbase whereas Jerusalem was just inconsequential to the war, but he never got the support for it.

Damascus was and still one of the most strategic cities geographically. who controls damascus can control all routes trad and militaristically around the whole region. their strategy to take damascus was the correct one but it was too late for them to implement in that situation when Muslims started to unifay. their attack of damascus made muslims unifay more.

Had the battle of Manzikert 1071 not been disastrous there would have been no need for the crusades and the domino's of the collapse of the Byzantine empire wouldn't be set up.
