Battery Replacement for JBL FLIP 5 (How to DIY)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video explains in step-by-step instructions how to replace a defective battery on a JBL FLIP 5 wireless Bluetooth speaker.
The replacement process is relatively simple and can be done with only a prying tool and a Phillips screwdriver.
There are a couple of steps where care and attention is required to prevent damage to the speaker (for example when it comes to the wire between the mainboard and the Bluetooth antenna). We will step you through these obstacles, so you can enjoy your speaker again without a hassle.

Amazon says "out of stock (maybe forever?). I tried, but I can't wait.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a video. You help make some of us family heroes and thereby make the world a better place. For future comment readers: mine also had a few differences with the Flip5 in the video, like what was said in one comment. No screws on the caps , only on the speaker. The power inner connector did not need to be undone, it was glued anyway (one small part came out), the wire was long enough to push the motherboard out enough to get to the battery connector, albeit after lots of coaxing- maybe it had a bit of glue too. While pushing out the motherboard, a flat ribbon connector came undone, probably should not have come out this way, maybe the wrong end of a connector came out. Delicate job to replace. After reassemble it worked great.

That's because the flip 5 has variants... That's a tl version And you probably own the CCA
This helped me so much I thought something was wrong with my JBL but it was actually dead because of overpowering, I purchased my kit off of Amazon and it came with everything and his directions are straightforward I recommend
1:00 mine did not have any screws, just clips. 3:20 My speaker plug was located under the motherboard. I could have pulled it off but there would have been no way for me to put it back. So I left the speaker dangling. 3:33 the battery plug was facing inwards making it extremely difficult to unplug it. Your battery connector was at the end of the motherboard whereas mine was in the middle. There was one more connector attached to the motherboard that fed to the exterior control buttons also preventing me from pulling out the motherboard. Once I had irreparably damaged the speaker as the bluetooth antenna wires got ripped out of their socket, I discover that the speaker plug wasn't a plug at all. It is permanently connected to the motherboard. Your video was great but I believe JBL saw this and in their next iteration of the Flip 5 they specifically designed it to be more difficult or near impossible to replace the battery yourself. On the inside of the case there was a little sticker that read Flip 5- V3. Thank you JBL. You have joined the ranks of SONY. Another electronics company I will never buy another product from again.

Hey @Curtis Johnston I had the same problem, but solved it. My JBL Flip 5 works now. I can try to describe some things: 1. You have to make things different than in this video. So you should not try to force the material to behave like in this video. Otherwise you will break things. 2. The first cable with the white adapter, that is connected to the platine, will go off, if you just gently push it side to side, pull a little, again push side to side and so on. 3. Don't try to remove the speaker (as you experienced it in your attempt). Just pull it out and work around the cables having the speakers hang outside while still connected. 4. Pull off the sticky black foam in the back so you can work there. There is also foam on the platina. I removed a lot of it because it makes it easier to remove the platina afterwards. 5. There are several ribbon cables that connect the platine to the outer body of your JBL Flip 5. Open and disconnect all of them but take a picture to make sure you remember which one has to go back in which place (there are numbers on the ribbon cables that help you to identify them afterwards). Especially one ribbon cable is pretty hard to reach as it lays on the inside. Some ribbon cables can be taken off after pulling the little plastic barrier up. Others (the brown ones) are not working like that. You have to pull them up parallel to the cable. They will come off easy. Then you can pull the ribbon cable off. Sounds complicated but it isnt. 6. Yes, the bluetooth antenna is sensitive. But if you just gently solve it it shouldnt break. You have to be careful there. 7. there is another little cable with a golden knob. It is connected to the outer body of your Flip 5. You can just pull it off. It will be easy to reattach it. 8. At this moment all cables should be removed from the outer box of your Flip 5. If the cables are not removed, dont proceed! 9. The platina is very hard to move. Just pull off some of the black foam thats on the edges (but gently!!). That should make it easier. You really have to push your fingers against it. It will come into your direction. 10. Because you removed all the cables you can pull off the platina far more than in the video. 11. Replace the battery. 12. The rest is not easy but you will get there by yourself. Basically putting the cables back and so on. Kind regards
Without this video I wasn't able to replace my battery, thanks so much...

Glad to hear it was helpful! Thank you for your feedback 👍
Very Helpful! Was very easy to follow along. Thank You So Much!!!
Very well done. Clear and easy to see. Thank you
If yours doesn't have the 4 inward facing screws you can save yourself some frustration and throw the speaker in the trash can. It's not possible to replace those because it has 1 little ribbon cable that can be removed but not reinstalled. The inward facing screw model is newer they probably fixed the design due to struggling with their own warranty replacements. I'm on my third of these speakers at $100 each and I decided to start replacing the battery myself to save $80 each time the battery degrades. Another note, if your battery gets weak and you let it die, it won't let you charge it anymore so don't ever let it die if it is old if you don't want to be stuck with a broken speaker
Excellent tutorial . Thank you! Shout out to the Swiss Army knife!

I have 3 flip5s and they are almost a year old .. how to know that when should i replace the battery ? The method you show was very good and i appreciate it. Kindly revert
*For all who struggle because it doesnt work like in the video* TRY THIS - #MegaSafetyFirst maybe you can pin this! As experienced and mentioned by others in the comments there seem to be other (newer?) versions of the JBL Flip 5 - where the inside looks different and you have to work it different than in this video. I repaired mine so I thought it would be cool for you if I made a little instruction: 1. You have to make things different than in this video. So you should not try to force the material to behave like in this video. Otherwise you will break things. 2. How are you getting the ends off?
Have 3 with same issue. No power, only power button lights up when plugged in. Battery gauge does flash. Also installed new battery. Nothing works... Yes I did resets. Any idea? Thanks...
Thank you so much mate. Perfect tutorial. It worked for me. Cheers!
looks like JBL changed the internal design a tiny bit in the last two years. From the looks and feels, i would guess to speed up the assembly process of those things. :D nevertheless, it was still easy to take appart, you only have to pay attention to the antenna and ribbon connectors, push out the motherboard a bit to reach the connectors so you can safely disconnect all three of them, otherwise you are screwed if those break... But still nice instructions, especially on how to open that thing. thanks a lot :)
My JBL is also a bit different. I had to remove the main cover, unscrew the speaker itself, remove it and there inside I found a cable that was not plugged in properly. No need to remove the side covers.
My little flip lock for the ribbon wire flew off, now it may be broke. So where can i find the tiny plastic retainer for the ribbon wire? Thanks. Great video by the way. :)
my flip 5 just died the other they when I plugged it in to the socket to charge. Is it probably the battery right? Is there a way to tell that the problem is the battery ?
Will the 21700 battery fit into the battery compartment?
Great video. I need to do this to my speaker. Can you please tell me exactly what model battery to order? I googled it but there was multiple batteries.
Super helpful, thank you!
I have 4 flip 5's 2 charge 5's and a boombox 2 which all link together and sound fantastic. Help video for when I need to replace the battery. I wonder if there is a battery upgrade?
Very good video! Thank you for making it.
Internally, my one year old JBL Flip 5 is different from the one shown in the video. My battery connector is in the middle of the mother board. It is virtually impossible to replace the battery.
I need jbl flip 5 original battery, how to find it
Thanks for your time
Thank you. Nicely done.
I have also a jbl flip 5 but yours is aother than mine. I have no screws for replace the cover. Your speaker has black and red cable, i have black, blue and red.
Does resetting the speaker turns off lfm?
I found a JBL Flip 5 6800 mAh battery. Can it go instead of 4800 mAh?
¿Dónde podre comdre comprar la batería?
dont know how old this flip5 is, but mine is like 5 years old and its totally different. this method doesnt work with recent versions, as thery are constructed differently
Ho seguito il tutorial, ma non serve smontare tutto : basta staccare il coperchio e la spinetta della batteria dal lato dove è alloggiata e sostituire.
Thanks for clip
Thank you man! :D
I looked this up to check the battery connector on my flip 5 and it was as I expected, the connector wasn’t fully plugged in
Very nice and neat way Very Good
I did something wrong. Followed the video exactly, put a new battery in (the straps around it are shorter than the original so it does wobble a tiny bit, then reassembled. But now whenever the volume goes over half, it shuts down for no reason

That sounds like the battery cannot provide enough Amps when the speaker needs more power due to higher audio volume. If you can I’d return the battery and get a different brand.
The foam pads on the replacement battery are not as wide as in this tutorial or what's on Amazon. The picture on Amazon look like they are the same size, but they are not. The original foam pads do not transfer to the new one (they don't come off the old battery in one piece.) Will the thinner bans make a difference?
@MegaSafetyFirst

The smaller pads should be fine. Their main purpose is to prevent rubbing, which they still should provide
Is there anyway you can do a video on water damage to the charging port
@MegaSafetyFirst
3 жыл бұрын
Did you have water come trough the seal by the port? I don’t have a video for that area of the speaker yet. But it is not that difficult to remove the charging port once the one end cap is removed. If I remember right, then the port itself is mounted on a small daughter board and is just glued into position. It can be pulled out of the plastic cover after removing the black rubber strips that surround the board.

@@MegaSafetyFirst no I took a shower and there mus have been water in the charging port and then I plugged it onto charge and it doesn't switch on anymore
Is it still water proof after you take it apart?
@MegaSafetyFirst

You should be able to get the speaker back together with it still being waterproof. The seals in the end caps are difficult to damage. Just the seal by the driver may be an issue if one is not careful enough.
Once I increase the volume of my flip 5, it trips off immediately, why is it so?

Me too , what the problem?
Save yourself the trouble. Newer models have a white (ground wire) that came off the casing, broke one of the ribbon cables because there was no flip connector. Battery costs about $20. Bought a new Walla speaker for $60 with shipping/tax.
Plz help me. I put it on charge and after 2 hours I see that it is not charged and when I open the charging, I see that the charging light goes up and down and the jbl speaker is not on.

Battery is worn out if it won't take a charge. You need to replace it.
No puede ser flip 5 tambien sufre del problema de bateria al igual que flip 4
WHY MINE IS SO DIFFERENT?
Good
All that just to change a battery, I would rather take it somewhere and get it done
you skipped some important steps i.e. the bluetooth wire should be removed first
Lol battery is $22. Speaker was $99. If the batt fails within the warranty period ill just exchange it. Afterwards ill just get a new speaker or upgrade. It's not meant to be user serviceable even though clearly it can be done. The second you open it up its no longer IPX7 CERTIFIED. It's like dive watches you can't replace those batteries yourself because they have to be pressurized and tested after they are opened up... more sense to buy a new one if it's outside of warranty
Very bad design
OR, just buy a new one.
Ha easier to buy a new one
