Bathtub in Shower FAILURE --- Bad Waterproofing Design

Ойын-сауық

Freestanding bathtubs in shower are a trendy design that can save space. But it can be very difficult to waterproof the drain connection properly as it goes through the tile floor.

    I'm a C-54 in Marin since '91. I've repaired dozens of leaking showers. Love your content but for the first time I have to disagree with your approach on this one. I always try to find the least expensive fix. Once the tub was out I would have exposed the funky tub drain, then isolated it with a temporary pan material "patch" and then water tested the whole pan. It would have passed, saved the H.O. thousands. Secondly, I confess to have used the spot bond (dollop) technique in a few problem areas. If you back butter the porcelain, upon removal the Hardibacker comes with it (Prolite T-set). Of course open space behind the tile is always bad. Third, Placerville to Novato can be traversed in 1.5 hours if you have a helicopter. It once took me 5 hrs with traffic. I know you are closer but I worked for a short while in S.F. when I lived in Sac years ago, nightmare! Keep em coming, you are a natural on camera! Looking forward to you helping out that lady up north. We breathed those poor people's ashes for weeks down here. I like to think they are part of us now. My two cents...

    I just used that tub drain assembly. It works great if you use the 1-1/4 " brass tailpiece that comes with the kit. The assembly is actually meant to be installed underneath the tile. Shame the design had a built in flaw (tub filler penetrating a wet floor) that guaranteed future trouble.

    Thank you for posting these videos! You have saved me from certain failure! I'm currently redoing my master bathroom with a tub in the shower. I'm using the brass tailpiece that inserts into the gasketed drain. The way I am sealing this penetration is by installing a 3 piece 2" shower drain upside down over/around the tub drain (it does fit). This way water would have to build up a few inches before it would be able to go over into the hole the tub tailpiece goes into. Will be using silicone caulk where intended on that unit to properly seal to the liner. Thoughts?

People just can't seem to wrap their minds around what's behind the tile, being so so important. It's hard to get people to pay for what they don't see. I see it too, decent tile work but the prep is an abomination.

    If you waterproof the lower third of the walls, the water that gets into the upper 2/3 seeps down and gets stuck between the water proofing and the tar paper behind the float. Then it goes down further and behind the waterproofing you use on the pan. Goes directly onto the plywood.

  • @tofuroshi

    @tofuroshi

    True, but not likely, as there is usually very little water penetration in the vertical surfaces. Not sure how long the shower has been sitting unused, but the mud looks bone-dry. If he was concerned, he could cut a joint all the way around and tie back into the tar paper for extra piece of mind.

    My comment is not related to this video & its actually more a question. Do you have any videos where you touch on mounting handheld shower head with sliding pole mount in a kerdi shower/steam room? Its a simple mounting process consisting of 2 screws/Anchors at top of pole & 2 screw/anchors at bottom. Im not sure what the process would be penetrating the kerdi membrane to mount this without loosing the waterproofing. Do you have a forum or email where it would be better to contact you? Thanks for attention to this & for all the videos you put out that have been Very Helpful for me as a DIYer designing & Laying out my master bath renovation. Ive learned alot just watching you show us what Not to Do & hope your able to help me with this final piece to my bathroom renovatio Puzzle.! Dan

    Been following you for a while and have learned quite alot however I've hit a snag, I have a customer that wants to keep their shower glass door and fixed glass panel. How do I remove the fixed glass panel from the U channel holding it. It is siliconed into the track but I cut the screws holding the track to the tile. I need to remove the glass so I can re-hang the U channel with new screws. Any tips or recommendations. Maybe a video on this as I've not found any but found lots of people on reddit that have had the same situation.

    QUESTION from a non-plumber/tile person. If the room itself is already water tight and ready for a shower, when they add a bath tub like that, why bother having it connected to the drain at all? Can't they just install the stopper and ignore the piping? That would allow it to just drain into the already finished water tight shower area..... or am I totally missing something (or likely, a few things)

    What is there to hold contractors responsible for clear incompetence and poor worksmanship? Seems like the customers are always out of luck and faced to deal with numerous contractors to resolve this. There should be some type of organization that oversees this and offer some kind of warranty that is actually enforceable or your license gets revoked. Customers having to jump through loopholes to get a contractor to honor their warranty is a ton of hassle and back-and-forth that ends up going nowhere. Get these bad contractors outta here....

    Hmm...I think I would have made the bottom plane of the tub sit level at the same height as the low point, then built the slope around the tub so it sat recessed below the tile and then join the plumbing under subfloor so the tub had its own drain. It would look better to see a sloping tile against the side of the tub rather than a gap between the tub and the floor.
