Bastau vs. Singer - "Daybreak" Dimash Kudaibergen Vocal Coach Reaction & Comparison

Grab some tissues, because this one is a tear-jerker. This song is based on a true story, about a cable car accident that took the lives of 14 people. 2 of those were a couple, who lifted their son to safety in their last moments. They did not survive.
The composer and original singer, Han Hong, later adopted the orphaned child.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Dimash Kudaibergen for the first time, performing "Daybreak” BOTH on Singer and at Bastau.

Best reaction/review/analysis of Daybreak that I've ever seen! Truly! I want to say thank you for being so thorough and complete, not only with the backstory but more specifically with giving both performances equal attention. Both performances are wonderful. You hit on everything I had noticed and seeing someone else pick up on all these nuances just is so fulfilling! I can't even begin tell you! But all of that aside, mostly I appreciate that as a vocal coach you clearly see his ability to sing and powerfully convey all that emotion to the listener. See, most vocal coaches are only focused on his technical ability. And, while technically he is astronomically great, his talent of telling a story and his unmatched ability to transfer all that emotion directly into your soul is arguably the best quality about Dimash. And when coaches neglect that quality, it is highly disappointing and practically a crime. All the technique and range in the world would only be a circus trick if not for his ability to connect his soul with yours. I am sooooo impressed that you as a vocal coach can clearly see this and value it. I think if I were to take vocal lessons, you would be the BEST person on line to take them from..... because you get it. You understand! And unfortunately that is very rare. Thank you so much for your video!!

I totally agree! Some vocal coaches are so conscious to the point that they keep pointing out all the technique that Dimash used and they forgot the emotional aspect of it or they are “ rock hard” to seem to be emotionless sometimes😅. I love and adore audiences and voice teachers who truly feel it and feel the connection from Dimash through the songs.Because at the end of the day, music is the connection. When you sing and make someone feels it and cries, you are successful!😇

The Charismatic Voice - I love the Singer version better just for the fact he sang this when he lost his voice went to the hospital came back from there after having injections in his throat and got on stage and sang this - he then lost his voice immediately after the song finished - for this i love this version and him. you can see the concern in their faces - they knew what was going on with Dimash but the audience and judges did not. In all honesty comparisons are a disservice to the uniqueness of songs sung no song can be sung the same each time plus Dimash usually changes bits here and there in his songs every time he sings them. It keeps them fresh for the listeners. Thank you very much. I come here regularly and enjoy every moment .

The original singer, Han Hong wrote this song after adopting a son who lost his parents tragically. A cable car fell and the father held his son up high until his dying breath in hopes of the toddler surviving and he did. Sadly both parents died. Han Hong was so moved she adopted the child and later wrote this song. She also became Dimash’s godmother during the filming of this competition.

They told him it was an ancient Chinese remedy, and he did take a few drops of it. I realized watching this time that he uses different registers to switch from being the boy somewhat grown up back to the time of the actual tragedy, even at the end after being taken back to the terrible happening in a cry of anguish, he follows that with a very sad but muted lower tone, representing the boy now, grown up and more sober

Look how awkwardly he gets back up from his knees in the Singer after the high part-I think he was exhausted with the effort of singing when he was sick. I think the physical pain in his throat added to the pain of the song. It doesn't have the same fireworks as the Bastau performance (those runs!!), but I can't listen to it without breaking up. I'm glad you listened to it too. I think if he had been able to perform this one at full strength during the Singer, he would have blown the competition wide open.

Not one person can perform his song exactly like he does... not yet. For now, U need 2-3 singers in coordination to sing almost every one of dimash’s songs😂😂😂 i mean,, ie: u need a male and female opera singer to cover ogni pietra. there are people who tried to cover his songs,, n they did so beautifully,, but they had to adjust some parts of the songs coz they just couldnt reach those notes or perform the sort of vocal acrobats he does. Note, the people who tried to cover his songs are professionally trained singer in their own rights,,

Fantastic reaction to both pieces. I love they way you looked at each on its own merit and then pointed out the salient differences. I agree that Bastau is the better performance. I also love the water effects going on in the background. However, as you mentioned, the performance he gave on the show, not even knowing if he would be able to sing...the doctor prescribing "no high notes" - and then he hits them anyway! Amazing. Thanks for going this comparison. Love your Dimash reactions!!

Dear Elizabeth, this song in any version always is very touching because of the story behind, I cry every time. Elizabeth, once again, thank you so much for this amazing reaction. Watching your reactions is like watching the song from the backstage, from the front row, from inside the singer's head, and in between his vocal cords. I know enough Chinese to understand the lyrics, but I did not understand how strong this song felt. I was actually not moved by the song, or had tears in my eyes, or was emotionally involved with the song until I watched your reaction. No other reaction videos online go through the depths of music and voice like you do. With so much love, thank you.

Like, I think, if he'd gotten his whistle note out in Unforgettable Day during Singer, like at Gakku, he might have taken first place in Singer. Things didn't always go his way but he was always totally amazing.

What a beautiful reaction to these two incredibly beautiful performances! Thank you so much Elizabeth - you made me cry all over again. PS I understand that just before the 'Singer' performance, Dimash was not even able to speak and that the specialist had told him not to attempt the high register stuff. Perhaps his going over the fine line towards the end of the song was also coloured by sheer relief and gratitude that his voice had stayed the course. And speaking of gratitude, I am deeply grateful to be living in the time of Dimash and also for having a musician of your calibre, experience and sensitivity to deepen and broaden our understanding of his artistry - mmmmmwah!

I can't even imagine what had to be going through Dimash's mind during his Singer performance. He'd lost his voice, gotten a shot in his neck, and his voice was raw. Yet, he still went out and hit all the high notes like everything was OK!!! To think he lost his voice immediately afterward. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he had to feel his voice starting to go and wondering if it was going to last until he was finished. Wow!! Such a touching song, but know this makes it even more touching.

I don’t know if you would be interested to see but on KZread there’s some backstage footage of him from that show that covers that day and what happened to his voice and in that footage you can totally see that he could not even speak. He tried to put together a sentence but his speaking voice was gone. So they took him to a doctor and there’s a cute moment where the doctor recognizes who he is, etc. Anyway, he got a shot on his throat on camera. And even though he couldn’t speak a few hours earlier, once on stage he sang it pretty damn well considering the condition he was in. If you can find it on KZread, I’d say watch it. It is basically an extended version of this Singer performance that includes behind the scenes footage. Also, on top of the vocal issues due to sickness he also had added pressure of singing this emotional song in Mandarin to a Chinese audience.. Just like how before his Autumn Strong performance he said when he sings a song in Mandarin , a song that is known and beloved by the Chinese audience, he tries his best to make sure to get the pronunciation as right as possible. That is what he said before Autumn Strong and I am sure the same sentiment applies here as well. So he had a lot of pressures on that day but he came through really well. True professional.
