Basque Country: French Culture - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite

More info about travel to French Basque Country: www.ricksteves.com/europe/fra... French Basque Country is dotted with unique small towns throughout its varied terrain. Espelette, famous for its peppers, is worth a short stop. High in the Pyrenees, St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port has an endearing energy, with its mix of day-tripping families and hikers starting their trek to Santiago de Compostela. Bayonne on the coast has a more urban feel. #ricksteveseurope #ricksteves #basquecountry

@@nicodemonapolitano5074not really, the French basques are practically French. The Spanish basques are an autonomous region which were allowed to keep their cultural traditions intact including their language. That’s why over 70% of native speakers are on the a Spanish side of Navarre

Relatively yes. Basque Country is in western piryneos (cantabric sea) and Catalonia in eastern piryneos (mediterranean sea). Both of two nations have a part in spanish state and another one in french state. Both they are between Spain and France.

@@allande1977 yes, the point is that basque cutlure today is also mixed with french culture , taht's why it said french culture in the title. The basque region of france is different from the basque region of spain today. People that want an independant basque country don't seem to understand that apart from a dozen people in the whole region nobody wants an independant basque region since they feel french. Fun fact: The basque and gascon are renowed for their patriotism to france in the last century and especially in ww1

@@danemon8423 I appreciate your condescension. It's always fun to have others explain your life, your history, your culture. I'm just going to point out the arrogance with which you put your knowledge forward. Your words are peremptory. You say them with a lot of self-satisfaction. The Basque Country is what it is because it has managed to keep its language alive. A living Basque language allowed an extremely strong culture. A culture that has appropriated external influences, which has mixed them with local ones. But make no mistake, it's still Basque culture. Regarding the fact that the North and the South of the Basque Country are "different", that the Basques and the Gascons were the most patriotic soldiers... I do not wish to comment on these approximations. Political subjects are not the purpose of my remark. In the Basque country, the Basques live, think and develop their culture in Basque, while drawing influences from the world, as always with us.
