    Here's a thought. Bugbears have a PC racial ability that allows them to make melee attacks from 10 ft. away. Combine that with the stretch attack you could, in theory, melee attack from 15 ft. Plus if you use a whip, that can naturally attack from 10ft away, add the previous information and your Bugbear Battle Master Fighter can whip someone from 20ft away.

    So I've always had a different head canon for why superiority dice are limited resource (other than game balance): - Opportunity. You need to find an opening before you can take advantage of it. So being able to use it is a mixture of luck and skill. Gaining more superiority dice means both honing your mind to spot openings that are more easily missed, and honing your body to take advantage of more fleeting openings that might close before a less skilled warrior could act on them.

    The Unearthed Arcana Class Features from a while back also added a few extra Maneuvers for the Battle Master, such as: AMBUSH: be sneakier or speedier to get the drop on your foes. BAIT AND SWITCH: when you're standing next to a friend, do a little shuffle-dance and switch places with them, also making them harder to hit. BRACE: When someone tries to run around near you, smack 'em. RESTRAINING STRIKE: When you hit someone, you also bear hug them into submission. SILVER TONGUE: You also combat trained your tongue, making you extra convincing in conversation. SNIPE: Shoot someone as a bonus action. STUDIOUS EYE: You also combat trained your eyes, letting you examine someone extra powerfully.

    I like to imagine the Riposte like when you parry in Dark Souls (yes, the terminology is confusing), knocking their weapon away and stunning them long enough to get an attack in. You can do that because they failed to hit your Armor Class, because AC is abstract and means a lot of different things.

    The best use of Commander's Strike I've seen was in an early Matt Coville streamed game. The party consisted of a Rogue, a Wizard, a Monk whose lowest rolled star was a 15 in INT, and a Battlemaster who joined the campaign late and was 4 to 6 levels lower than everyone else. He learned really quick that his best possible contribution in battle was to sit back and let the monk do all his flurry of blows nonsense each round, and then on his turn order the monk to do all that nonsense again.

  • @SteveMan92

    @SteveMan92

    Were they playing a house rule on Commander's Strike? By RAW, it only allows the person you "command" to make one attack as a reaction, so the monk wouldn't be able to use flurry of blows. It would be statistically be better to use on the rogue because of all the extra d6 they would get from sneak attack damage

  • @CitanulsPumpkin

    @CitanulsPumpkin

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@SteveMan92 I think he was just attacking, but when I say this monk's lowest stat was a 15 I really mean Colville said several times that the monk player rolled about 3 18's during chatacter creation. His one extra attack with all his bonuses and the superiority die was more than the underleveled average stated battlemaster could do with his own attacks. Also I was pretty sure rogues can only sneak attack once a round. The rogue was already doing that on his turn.

    Commander's Strike is great if and only if you have a Rogue. Since Sneak Attack applies by turn rather than by round, Commander's Strike allows your Rogue to get another sneak attack a round since the Strike is on your turn. If you don't have a Rogue in the group, then go with something else.

    A Battle Master Fighter with any kind of Rogue is a nightmare on the battlefield. You can make a sneak attack any time you have advantage against an opponent, you can also make a sneak attack on any opponent who has one ally of yours within 5 ft. of them. Maneuvering attack to get an ally within range, or trip attack to make the enemy prone, after that you go to town on them.

    Commander's Strike allows them to take it as an immediate reaction on your turn - so if you see someone in trouble with the enemy they're fighting, you can sacrifice your attack and bonus to help them deal with their enemy quicker. This combos well with characters that don't have a high "reaction economy" (i.e. casters with counterspell, or melees with sentinel), Rogue Sneak Attacks, Paladin Smites, Monk Stunning Strikes, and a handful of other things. It can be very nasty when the fighter is willing to admit that their attack isn't the most important thing on the board.
