Watching people do videos like these encourages me to do my own reading more, which I’m grateful for. So far on my summer reading list which I didn’t have as that ambitious, I’ve finished Silas Marner and loved it, I’m almost done with Mrs. Dalloway (my second Virginia Woolf novel) and I’m going to start The Sound and The Fury with a month left to go. I’m really enjoying everything I’m reading. My first Virginia Woolf novel was actually Orlando so I did this in the reverse order, I found it’s prose to be the best I had ever read in my life. Orlando to my memory seemed more connected the electrifying love for life and art whereas Mrs. Dalloway is more in touch with the tepid and fear and dread of death as well as the progression towards it and how conformity and the social expectation to do so can be deceptively agonizing and destructive yet plain and lukewarm. I’m sure it was on purpose though, because conforming is contradictory in that way.

Jorge Amado is just one of the amazing writers of Brazilian literature, and I really loveee to see more people giving Brazil the attention it deserves ❤

Orlando was the last book I read last year and I passed the entires last week of 2022 thinking about this book and how woolf portrays life, memory, death, time, all those themes SO BEAUTIFULLY it almost hurts how beautiful everything is written. I love love love her writing, even though I had to read the translated text (my english is not fluent enough to really get her books on its original language hahaha). But still, such a great book, definitely one of the best I've read in recent years. ALSO Jorge Amado is a Brazilian author!!!! This book you received its also adapted to a "telenovela" and is very very famous here in brazil, I hope you'll love it as much as we do ! Lots of love from here 💕💕

Eu achei o canal dela por causa dos vídeos de "recomendações muito específicas de livros" q ela fazia uns anos atrás, aí descobri q ela fazia letras (??) e fiquei muito curiosa, e continuo acompanhando até hoje! Mas também foi um ótimo treino pro meu inglês, antes eu tinha q assistir os vídeos com legenda em inglês pelo menos, pra poder entender, mas hj eu coloco na velocidade 1.5x e entendo super de boa ! que bom encontrar mais brasileiros que gostam dela 🥺🥺🥺

I LOVED The Awakening too. I had a feeling I would hold it close to my heart. It's interesting how our age, stage of life and our circumstances influence how we read and experience a book. Reading it now, at age 44, I feel it means so much more to me than if I had read it 20 years ago. Same with my re-read of To The Ligthouse (Virginia Woolf) last year - that made me sob, like ugly cry, and I don't remember being as afflicted when I first read it in my early 20's.

I love Virgina Wolfe. She really writes beautifully💕

"her bisexual bestie" feels like the next level up from 'they were really close friends'... like the stages of grief but for accepting that historical figures were gay 😂

Yeah, totally. Vita and Virginia were friends and lovers. Though Vita did pump out a couple of sons in her marriage, she was a gay woman, and she was married to a gay man. The Orlando/Shel relationship explored in the book was very much a tribute to the Vita/Harold relationship and the freedom they had to be their authentic selves, together ♥💚💜

Virginia Woolf’s writing is just stunningly beautiful.

emma you're going to love "gabriela, cravo e canela"! one of my favorite works by jorge amado is "the double death of quincas water-bray" an amazing short story about the two lifes of a man, know to be one of the greatest short stories of our brazilian literature. and yes, he's the author of "captains of the sands". also, since you are always so respectful with every culture, i just thought you would like to know that's not the way we pronounce jorge in portuguese. thank you so much for spreading the brazilian culture for your subscribers, as a letras major (basically our version of an english major) makes me very happy!

I use eucalyptus oil. It removes sticky residue from price tags, dirt etc. Works a treat every time, and it smells nice.

Oooh I have a winter book recommendation! Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Høeg. I don't really remember much about the plot and such (should re-read), but it absolutely does have a cold, wintery vibe. “Reading snow is like listening to music. To describe what you've read is like explaining music in writing.”

I am so happy that you love Orlando!! I read this last year and absolutely fell in love with Virginia Woolfs writing and story telling. Orlando is my favourite book of all time now and hearing you like it too makes me want to reread it so badly- I might ignore my TBR and actually do so, haha

The only glacier book (in English) I've encountered recently is Do Glaciers Listen?: Local Knowledge, Colonial Encounters, and Social Imagination, don't know if you've heard of it. Though I'm interested to read it because it mentions that it also addresses oral history.

That’s a great comment on Orlando and more generally on the references to writing. Ever since I’ve started reading “good smart books” I’ve been seeing so much cross referencing between all kinds of authors! like Murakami referencing Rudin and The Red and the Black, or any number of references made by Nabokov, Erica Jong or John Fowles. It’s really fascinating how these well established folks seem to have a great time throwing (mostly) friendly nods at each other!

Virginia Woolf is my favourite writer and I love Orlando, have read it several times, including recently for the GOT bookclub. A few things that are important to realise when reading it, as well as it being experimental in form and being a a mock-biography of Virginia's friend and lover, fellow author Vita Sackville-West (don't worry, no spoilers ahead): Because Vita was a woman, she could never inherit Knole. Virginia immortalised Knole for her throughout the book (Knole is the inspiration for the 'castle' that was Orlando's home), and the romp through the centuries is also in part a tribute to the generations of history of that place. Vita was a masculine-presenting gay woman. The character of Marmaduke Bonthrop Shelmerdine, or "Shel", is a portrayal of Harold Nicholson, Vita's husband, who was also gay. Within their supportive marriage, they were both free to be their authentic selves and have love affairs of their preference. They had mutual acceptance and genuine respect for one another and it was a good arrangement. The relationship between Orlando and Shel was a nod to that relationship. The playing around with gender within the novel reflects the sexuality (though gender and sexuality aren't the same thing) and gender expression of both Vita/Orlando and Harold/Shel and the societal norms and expectations of the time. We of course have better awareness and terms for all things within queer culture these days and if Virginia was alive today she most likely would have written things a bit differently. But it was ahead of its time, at the time. Virginia turned a confronting event in real life (Vita going off with another woman) into art, by writing Orlando, escaping being overwhelmed by an experience where others were worried for her. She channelled loss into genius.

I have the same door handles and a cat who opens them all the time. Even though he gets in trouble he seems dirven to open all closed doors. Luckily the entrances doors are heavier and they stick so he cant' open those. Love your videos. You are the most unique person I watch. Keep it up.

I went to the Athabasca Glacier this summer and the guide talked about how he can mark important events of his life based off how the Glacier appeared at that time. It reminded me of that when you spoke of your thesis. Very interesting!!

Hot tip for cleaning gross things from book covers (if they're coated and not just straight-up paper/cardboard): you can use a very slightly damp white magic sponge and it will clean everything off. Black smudges, suspicious sticky stains, blood-covered fingerprints, what CAN'T it do. If the residue is very sticky, like glue from a sticker, and you're very, very sure the cover is not just paper, you can use goo-gone or some sort of oil to remove it, and then, after it's been wiped off, go over it with the magic sponge. Most of my books are thrifted, so I have a lot of first hand experience with dirty covers.

If I have a book that needs something cleaned from it, whether its sticky residue from a price tag, dirt, soot, other random stuff - that isn't, like you said, straight up paper/cardboard - I use eucalyptus oil. It does the trick every single time.

Gabriela Clove and Cinnamon were adapted to two soap operas here in Brazil and to a movie. If i'm not wrong the movie is very easy to find complete on youtube due to expired copyrights

I love the immortals after dark series and the one you have is one of my favorite ones. Hope you like it, you can totally read them out of order but they do interconnect with other events from other books but since that one is the fourth book you won't miss much plus Kresly Cole kinda does a recap of previous events so you get what's going on. If you stick to it I can't wait until Lothair makes his cameos in the other books. Chef's Kiss You should also try her game maker series

Emma, for your second thesis research I would recommend 'The library of ice' by Nancy Campbell. One line of the description says 'She examines the impact of ice on our lives at a time when it is itself under threat from climate change'. I thought that would be a good resource!

I have Orlando and The Awakening on eBook to read. I wanted so much to join the Tome but it got away from me, so I have the novels to read. Can't wait to get down to reading them all properly. I hope I'll be able to replay some of the Tome videos later as I read the books.

I studied art and antiquities maintenance and for one of the papers I had to write I found out that microorganisms can remain dormant within a glacier for thousands of years without dying. If the glacier melts, they could reawaken. This is similar to the pyramids, where visitors have been known to start having health problems after visiting the pyramids.

Hi Emma, I loved this vlog so much! I just wanted to say that "Jorge" in portuguese is not pronounced the same way as in spanish, so it's actually closer to the way you pronounce it in english (though it's kinda different, obviously hahah).

hi, emma! just a heads up: J in portuguese is pronounced like the J in "jewelry"! and G followed by E and I it's also the same pronunciation! So Jorge Amado is pronounced almost like you guys pronounce George LOL it's hard to explain this in written word, but it's like you pronounce George, without the first E! :) (if you try to speak like this, please, put it on a video lol) ANYWAY... The writing in Orlando, with the frost fair? I want to live in that prose. I overall gave the book a 3.75 and I can't remember why. Maybe because the plot itself isn't super strong? But the writing is beautiful and the premise intriguing!
