Jack's checklist to enjoy a piece of literature: - sadness - appreciation of ordinary things - suffering - heartbreak - a unique perspective on life - depression Hence, if there were a video named "reading YOUR favorite book recommendations", I would humbly recommend mine in advance: "Madonna in a Fur Coat" by Sabahattin Ali. I'm fortunate enough to read it in its original language (Turkish) but I'm sure the translation will also present its naive story in a captivating way. All the love!

whenever i in a reading slump or I don't wanna read. I come to this channel, because it is rare to see a love for books so pure like jack shows sincerely on his channel. Literlly, this man NEEDS to be protected at all costs.
I love that the majority of these quotes are about being alone! And figuring out your individual, singular experience, environment, etc. As a Ralph Waldo Emerson stan, I'm all for this lovely selection!
This is perhaps my most favourite video of yours. It just felt like a love letter from a book lover to another book lover
Someone tell me why I always feel so much comfort with Jack's videos. I put them on in the background just because it is so calming lol
Please do a part two!!! The way you read the quotes makes the quotes even more beautiful
"a word that seemed to force something undefinable into the prison of letters"...GOSH that's so good!
I swear you're like the Bob Ross of reading. I love what you said about physical books containing two stories, that's why I buy most of my books used... I mean sure, it's nice that they're cheaper, but I more just love stumbling across someone else's (or multiple someones') old underlines, margin scribblings, or even just the random things they used as bookmarks--old receipts, play tickets... I even once found someone's pink slip between a book's pages, which was fascinating and depressing all at once. It's like taking a small peek into a stranger's soul, and maybe finding a small reflection of yourself in their notes as well.
This pure, unadulterated celebration of literature you love was lovely!
I love how Jack's love for books and reading just shines through in this video 🥰
Just a very practical thought: thank you for writing down the quotes while you were reading them. I have a hard time focusing when people are reading aloud and because here I could read along, I could fully enjoy the whole experience. Thank you also for the brilliant idea of reading your favorite passages to make us discover your favorite books, it was so agreeable :)
it's so beautiful watching someone be passionate about the thing they are passionate about. every time jack recommends a book, i immediately add it to my list in the hopes that i will be half as passionate about it as he is. these videos warm my heart every time without fail.
THANK YOU, for pouring your love for books, pages, words with us… Is amazing how literature can take us to feel so vividly so many emotions, each of them so personal to each one of us. Keep sharing what you love! 💗👏
these videos are so great because not only do we get to hear some beautiful, profound, thought-provoking words, but it also gives us an insight to the writing style in the books. for example I've always wondered about Toni Morrison's writing style, as I've never read her before, and now I now more about it it only intrigues me more.
About a quarter of the way into Song of Achilles and it is phenominal... The storyline, the writing also.. Just Patroclus, his view of Achilles makes me wanna cry everytime. Thank you for recommending this novel, i cannot wait to see how the story goes (which seems strange to say about a Greek Tragedy)
Yes!! I’m always astounded by how creative your video ideas are. You deserve all your success. Your video reminded me of a creative piece I once wrote about how ‘books are the archive of my thoughts’. I absolutely love re-reading my old annotations and comparing them to my thought processes now.
11:37 “A word that seemed to force something undefinable into the prison of letters” is quite possibly the best way I’ve ever heard love described
Every time you upload a video I get so excited 😭 Thanks for the great content and for inspiring me to start reading again 😼💖

Hands down my favorite video of youtube 🥺 You reading such quotes and the pace of your voice taking us through them. Let me go pick up my jaw ❤ thanks 😊
What a compliment "Toni Morrison and James Baldwin are the gold standard for me..." There is something to say about authors who are able to create a certain rhythm with their words!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing these extracts Jack. I struggle to have the energy to read a whole book at times so this is really helpful to hear a little extract of brilliant writing so I can still be inspired by it. You've shown me the perfect book for a surprise gift for my brother, he loves Bojack Horseman. His birthday has just passed but I'll put it on my wishlist so I remember it for next time or just surprise him with it sometime in case I forget. Was that book mix-up a Freudian slip? It seems like books are that important to you! (I can't find it now to check what it said but I think it was something beautiful that I thought would fit you and books.)

I feel the same! Some books don’t sound so interesting to me, but to hear and see him so happy, is making me happy hahah
I underline quotes in my books, too! Instead of dogearring it on the bottom, I write the page number on the inside of the front cover. It makes it super easy to find them in the book, and your pages aren't wrinkled. I write notes there too, sometimes. (I eventually write them on 3x5 index cards, separate them by subject matter, and use them on art pieces. But, this bit is probably more than you want to know.🤷🏻♀️)
Holy moly Jack!!! That quote from In The Dream House really hit me hard after recently leaving an abusive relationship. I would love a part 2🫶🏼 (Also as a random side note I am so excited for the new Taylor’s version album like can we just take a moment😭)
I'm so happy you included 'Almond". I'm Korean and it's one of the recommended youth books!! I remember reading it in primary school

You’ve rekindled my interest for reading ❤ thank you so much ❤
“It ocurred to her that she loved the idea of being in a relationship more than she loved any person she’d actually been in a relationship with”. So relatable for me; I am usually in love with the idea of having that bond and not that much in the people.

well put. The way you explained that there are 2 stories to a book. I've never thought of it that way. I do use post its and sometimes pen directly onto the page if something is intriguing to me.

Jack, you seem grateful, appreciative, rested and happy. The trip seemed to rejuvenate you. Oh, and the way you read the lines of the books was mesmerizing.
I love all your videos but this one will be one of my favourites!❤
I recently read Sula this year, too! It felt like opening my eyes for the first time. I have never encountered stories like Sula where the depravity of women, friendships, and romance were written ambiguously but so clearly haunting as well. You're right that she's one of those gold standards. With just one book, you can really see that.
Hey, I really like this format of sharing Book recs.
