I'm about to start an entry level IT Help Desk job. Admittedly, I don't know much aside from the very basics of computer functioning. The job plans to train me, but I wanted to look up some things on my own. I found this very helpful. Thank you so much.

Hey. Might be a bit late with this answer to your question, but I would suggest youtubing for Comptia a+ material. There are plenty of vids explaining and going through the stuff that's in the books for those certifications. Once you know what's in the books, Google is your free study.

There are a lot of "free" IT training education, but I suggest you invest in commercial education, as a lot of it is more organized, and it will teach you more effectively. If you are going to make it in IT, you will need to keep your education up to date. Make sure you can back up what is on the certifications, versus just "passing" them. Certifications are one of the best ways to stay up to date, and they help you progress in IT. Always keep getting them, and do not stop. One of the most important skills for any IT person, is to know how to troubleshoot properly, because there will be times, where you encounter issues, you have no experience with, and nobody is there to help you.

Great video man. A lot of stuff that really needed to be said, havent come across a video that spells it out so well though. As an inspiring IT person with not much hands on under my belt but a whole lot of school, it was nice to hear that we shouldn't be so intimidated by the dreaded "list" of job requirements. Thanks a lot.

I have my first entry level interview Monday morning after working as a Security guard for the past decade. I'm half way through a degree in IT with part time/distance learning and got the A+ a few months ago. To say I'm nervous is an understatement. Thank you for making this video it's been really helpful.

I started doing Helpdesk about a year and a half ago now. It's a fast growing medical device company that has a lot for IT to do but our team is small and there is no lack of critical project, tasks and issues. I am being called a level 3 but I see my skills still at level 2-2.5. This is mostly due to me being a slow typer and lacking on trancsribing my notes. I am so behind on tasks and projects but this is the nature of the beast where I work. I'm out of the frying-pan and into the fire but still hanging in there! What I would say to anyone wanting this position is "have good typing skills and take more notes than you need. - Like the video stated, DOCUMENTATION is the key. Documentation of known bugs/fixes will shortcut a lot of issue time and allow you more time for your bigger tasks and projects. - *Here is a response I left for another person from below that doesn't take good notes. "Bring a notepad and pen, a notepad and pen, a notepad and pen, take notes, notes, notes, notes and more notes! If you have a scan folder to use, scan your notes and then shred the paper versions. You don't want sticky notes & notepad papers with company info lying all around your desk, this will make your IT Dept. look trashy and make your boss unhappy!! Take short informative notes all the time. You can build on these as you go along. Create documents with added details about your notes that will have better context, structure and clarity. Eventually you will have a nice KB for yourself. Take notes as you fix things and create how to's then validate on a system that needs this same issue fixed.. Follow 'your' documented procedure and make final changes of steps you may have missed. When certain that your process is on point, add it to the iT knowledge base for other IT members to use. Good luck to you in your IT adventures!

Good stuff. Just like to add that there are usually some semi-recent used and cheap computers at second hand stores if you want to learn how to replace hardware, install new programs, test, play, etc. I did that alot back when it was still the x86 (like 286) times, but for anyone today.. :)

People should also think about learning Linux if they're thinking about working for a big company. I never worked with Linux until I got my current position. I'm glad the 902 A+ exam covers a little on Linux and Mac OS.

I have to agree with you and I didn't really figure that out until the last two interviews I did, both with Linux admins. There's alot to be said about that O/S and I encourage ppl to now look at it as a career path.

Thx for this and for keeping it here for a few years. At 60 am studying for my A+. Managed in retail for 30 years and dont want to die there :). Love computers so going to change careers. You've helped supply some direction so thank you also for that. Will see what other vids you have, take care.

I chose Poly mainly because of their scholarship they have going on, and their location. It's 30 minutes away from me, and Orlando is a pain in the butt to navigate. Lakeland is a city with lots of opportunity. culture, and nightlife. Also lots of places to study. They pay for $3500 of my tuition ($5000), so I'm basically only paying $750 a semester. I'll pay less than 10k including books and such for a bachelors in Computer Science with a focus on Cyber Security. Poly is definitely a challenge, and we just received our regional accreditation. At Poly, everyone is focused on technology and engineering, so it's a great environment for someone looking to enter the tech industry. I'd recommend taking a tour of both schools and deciding. Give it ten years or so, I think Poly will be well on its way to being THE engineering school in Florida.

This guy is a total professional. He's a natural teacher...I can say this as I've spent too much time in school. (ashamed to actually say). He's giving you information and insight that you probably wouldn't get get with hard core IT types. Notice how he even says guys and Gals, some people you have to hammer into their heads that there are some women in IT and technical fields. Just some little things that i pick up on.

I'm constantly receiving job offers for IT positions from my resume, but I email them back or call them, and there is no response, or I'm suddenly "not a good fit" for the position. Why reach out to me in the first place? A hiring manager gets bored at their desk and decides to try getting your hopes up for naught, I guess.

I found some of these requirements are just overwhelming, and I get scared even applying cuz of the requirements. I feel like I'm suppose to know everything...like I mean EVERYTHING. +yyeppesz This made me chuckle a bit because it's a great observation. It's the same reason all the my sentences are on a slant when I write on the whiteboard :) The truth is...I have shitty penmanship(you should see me write on paper...even worse). That's the problem in today's world where 99.9% of our writing in on a keyboard. Employers have no clue what your penmanship looks like so it shouldn't matter. Resumes are typed, emails are typed, everything is typed. So I wouldn't worry about it..I'm not. The key is that my grammar is proper and THAT, I AM great at. So I don't know if your question was a serious one or not, but I gave you the honest answer.

flash26573 If you're aspiring to follow the Cisco route, I'd start with the CCNA. It's a tough exam so you'll have to study your ass off! But Cisco work is fun if you like working with routers, switches, firewalls, etc. The Network + will also help for admin stuff and will always look good on a resume because it's such a widely known cert. You can always start with the Network + , get your feet wet and then move on to the CCNA.

I know this is really late, but What part of IT were you under. Networking, System Admin, Programming, Cyber Security, etc. The other question was if you had a chance to co-op, I know co-ops help you get experience while in school, and it's what I'm going through now

you know what amazes me is how often i can call my ISP and the T1's literally have zero knowledge on some real basic networking stuff...one operator literally asked me "what's a ping?"

Kewl Beans I can tell you that just by making the assumption in your head that you're not getting the job is the dominating factor. You need to change that mindset or else you'll keep getting what you put out. The universe responds quite nicely to the energy you provide it. Ya this all sounds like a bunch of bullshit (as some would say), but I promise you and anyone else that reads this, it's 100% fact. So next time you go for an interview, tell yourself the story that you will nail it, crush it, and do great things. Even if you don't get the job, just having a better attitude will make the entire experience better. Trust me on that.

Information Technology Q & A Show you missed my point. i've heard more stupid excuses from HR's not wanting to hire me. i was told by a bank i was over qualified for a data entry position. fine whatever...but turned down at a video store for not having cash handling experience? it's not my mindset that's the problem. even tho it's 2015 the world still sees a guy in a wheelchair as a useless cripple. that pretty much cancels out any and all credentials i happen to have. i've gone through MCSE and A+ certification courses at an actual microsoft/compTIA sanctioned training center. there's a reason 60% of disabled americans are unemployed and it's not because we're all incapable of performing any job function. i do on occasion provide technical support to my friends and neighbors but even a lot of them have issues paying me for it. apparently $30 flat rate for a house call is "too expensive" for some. and a while a few extra bucks once in a while is nice it's definitely not "steady income." the only tech job i actually had was a shop run by a guy selling illegal copies of windows xp. i quit that job like a bad habbit soon as i figured out how he liked to do business...plus he wasn't really paying me either...

Kewl Beans I guess I didn't have the whole story before my last comment. I can understand your situation; it's a difficult one for sure and I don't really understand the hang up with companies who are reluctant to hire folks that are physically disabled. I'm sure you're more than capable to perform the job functions. I don't have alot of suggestions for you other than to try and find a remote gig or start your own gig online. Sounds like you've got some great knowledge. I'd say that when you interview in person, you've got to really make an impact on them to consider you. It's all about how you present yourself with your knowledge, personality, willingness, and how much value you can provide to the company.

Thanks a lot for taking time to make these inspirational/informational videos! This is actually the first one that I have come across. I am in school right now CIS. I started wanting to build pc's and repair them but this was before I actually got in school last semester. Now I am very much more interested in coding and software or networking than the pc shop. The thing that scares me is that the more I learn the more I learn that there is more that I know nothing about. I feel like I have started bouncing all over and now I am kind of down and I don't even know why. I attend a small community college and do very well. I get along great with my teachers and classmates but sometimes I doubt myself. I can tell that everyone has more confidence in me than I have in myself. I have only completed the first few classes and have acquired a Microsoft Certification (MTA Web and App Development with HTML5) but sometimes just don't know what will happen in the end. I guess I'm saying all of this to ask you what advice would you have for a young man who has a hard time sticking to one thing? I Always see something I think I like more and branch out so I master nothing but I get pretty good at a lot of areas. Also my best friend is currently a Mechanical Engineer, he does a lot of AUTO CAD and emergency plans for buildings. His degree is actually in Architecture with Construction Management. We want to teach each other what we learn and work together to create something nice. Do you have any ideas for us?

Not knocking those jobs because someone has to do it, but it's not lucrative at all and not much opportunity to grow. Listen, we will always learn more about anything in life, it's never ending. I.T. can be overwhelming because of the vastness of areas to focus on. Good video but the truth is, this is the tip of the iceburg. I have all of this including Security+ and 5 years enterprise work history. Getting a job in this economy is hard. More important is not giving up.

Information Technology Q & A Show I'm really happy you mentioned the unrealisticness of these job postings. Makes me feel a bit better about going out there and trying. I know I'll never learn everything out there but just enough that I'll still be well rounded in the tech world.

Thanks Brandon for watching! If you're in high school, and your parents expect you to go to college/university, then appease them. I'm not here to tell ppl not to go to college. It's a decision you have to make based on your future career. Note that while you are in college, you can still pursue IT certs.

Interviews always suck but the best advice I can give is to just be honest and don't bullshit your way through them. Authenticity goes a long way, arguably more than the technical skills you might have.
