    That’s some fun stuff . I like the way you explain roofs . You should write a book, I would definitely buy it and read it.

    Nick , thanks again , at the end with the jack rafter you move 1” in from plumb line to measure for jack rafter , why is that , I would always add 1/2” or more depending on pitch of roof , just love to know , thanks again

    Because we want to get to the point on the outside of the boards where the king common rafter meets the hip rafter(lead edge). That is the point where the step-down math begins. From there the common difference is marked along the spine of the common rafter from the top down. Once completed, we measure up from the heal stand line to the marks to obtain the consecutive jack rafter lengths.

    Hi Nick, as always I greatly appreciate your time and efforts. Still waiting for those Instructional DVDs. Please don't take this wrong as I am just trying to learn and master roof cutting. Am I doing the math wrong for the H/VLL? I plug in 12^2 + 16.97^2 = 431.980. sq.rt = 20.784. divide by 12 = 1.732. Was I supposed to round off something before getting the 1.732. I noticed you calculated it as 1.734? Like I said please do not take this wrong, am I just trying to learn and get this under my belt. I can't find any books, or videos that break this down in simple terms as you do. Greatly appreciate your love for this dying trade and want to keep the master skilled workers going.

    I've viewed most of your videos. Just the knowledge I'm looking for. I'm in need of understanding how to connect a bastard roof 2.5/12 and 6/12 using the math as I'm attempting to do it without adjusting HAP (which I think yields different overhangs). I'm in need of figuring out the bevels cuts. Are you available for consultation?

    Roof Cutting and Stacking.. thank you. I have a question for you: what if you jumped in on a job to do a simple gable roof on an existing structure, whether a new build or just a new roof on an old building, and for whatever reason the span on one end was 4 inches different than the span on the other end. How would you handle that? Thank you

  • @roofcuttingandstacking7925

    @roofcuttingandstacking7925

    Tim Barry We’ve been in that situation many times. It’s a judgment call. Sometimes we parallel the ridge to one side and cut all those rafters the same length and sick frame the other side by making each consecutive rafter a little bit longer in turn. Sometimes if it’s not much we choose a side or the center and run them all the same length which makes the ridge out of level. Sometimes we treat the rafters like trusses and cut them all the same but lengthen the seat cuts on one side change, thereby not compromising the pitch of the roof. All three have drawbacks. The third is the most accurate as long as it is not a vaulted ceiling. When sheeting the third, the plywood must run parallel to the ridge.

    Roof Cutting and Stacking... that's awesome. Thank you. What about adding another plate that is parallel and square and try to hide any overhangs of that plate in the soffit?
