The APM is a great flight controller because it can be set up easily, supports many external sensors such as GPS, and is easy to get help on from online forums and youTube videos like this one!     I delved into this arena for a short time and purchased all of the old junk to build one of these dinosaurs! I have many long range quads that fly so easy and smooth, but I have always been fascinated with these old buzzards. Big mistake, I dropped around $300.00 to build one of these using the APM 2.8 FC. It flew ok for a large, under powered, way out of date, piece of old garbage! The undoing of it, was when I attempted to use auto calibrate! That sucker went waco and began to sway left and right and finally crashed into the ground. Due to the fact that it was plastic and not carbon, and weighed a ton caused it to shed many many parts on impact. It now lives in the city dump, lesson learned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How far we have come! I have two 60mm quads that are not toy grade and will fly circles around this. I also have 6 GPS quads including DJI products that bring a smile to my face every time. These are best remembered in the past tense and left to posterity!

    Nice vid. Actually u need to install the props upside down in each motor in the compass motor calibration. This is to let the electronics 'emit' the actual interference during flight received by the compass. Running compassmot calibration without the props doesnt give any interference at all. Hope this helps

    You should upgrade to a pixhawk 2.1. It is much better than the apm and has more ports. P.S I am mentioning the pixhawk 2.1 after experience. I have full obstacle avoidance and automatic landing gears on it.

    Really great video! One thing that I didn't really understand is how do you power the ESC's. I saw that you connected the lipo battery to something but I'm not sure what. Do you use a power distribution board? I hope it doesn't sound dumb, I'm a beginner and want to build a quadcopter. Everything was clear except that part. So the ESC's power the APM with 5V and make the motors spin, but how do ESC's receive power?

    The bottom plate of the frame has a built-in power distribution board. If your model does not have one, you could just solder all of your wires together in a clump or spend the $1 and just get a cheap distribution board. ;) The ESCs power the flight controller and all other low-current hardware through the three wires that come off of it. If your ESCs only have two wires, they don't have a built-in BEC which supplies 5v power through that third wire.     You can use just about any flight controller you want which supports up to 8 motor outputs.

    Not necessarily. A lower KV would be able to turn a larger propeller or a propeller with a higher pitch.

    I have an HMF U580 quadcopter running 380kv motors with 1545 propellers, would I be able to run smaller propellers, if so, what pitch would be most suitable for those size motors, and by the way, great tutorial.

    Is that light on your receiver or APM? It sounds like you have a binding error. Double check that your receiver and transmitter are compatible and that they are bound.

    The APM 2.6 goes through some "pre-arm checks" before it arms. Here is a list of them in order: ardupilot.org/copter/docs/prearm_safety_check.html We can now be sure that your problem is listed there. Most of those problems are very uncommon, so check all of these: 1) Your APM 2.6 is level. 2) You are outside and have a GPS lock. 3) Your transmitter's throttle value is trimmed to the very minimum (this is what happened to me).

    Sorry, I just noticed that the last part of my last comment failed to post, so here it is: I would check that: 1) You are outside and have a solid GPS lock 2) Your APM 2.6 is at least semi-level and on flat ground 3) Your transmitter's throttle channel is tuned to it's very minimum. If your throttle is too high, the APM won't arm. Sorry for the delayed response.

    I didn't do any PID tuning. The stock PIDs are usually pretty acceptable and since I'm not going to be doing any racing with this thing, I just let them be.

    The accelerometer measures lateral acceleration which can tell the FC which direction the copter is moving relative to itself, but a not relative to the world as a whole. The compass tells the copter which direction it's traveling in relative to the entire planet (N, S, E, or W).

    Yes as your flight controller still has a built in accelerometer and gyroscope.

    The kit came with some cheap plastic ones, but I would suggest some 1045R carbon fiber ones.

    How much does the type of battery matter as far as voltage? (what can i get away with?)

    I wouldn’t go any lower than 3s (12v) for something like this. If you want to go above 4s (16v) you’re gonna need to upgrade your motors and speed controllers. I think that 4s is a perfect middle ground.

    There is not exactly a maximum voltage that you can attach to your flight controller, it is mainly about what voltage your motors and ESCs can handle. Your ESCs, if they have built in BECs, will output 5v to your flight controller no matter what voltage is put into them. For the S550, I would suggest a 3-4s lipo.

    my controller wont arm the drone... i have it connected and have calibrated it but it still wont arm. the blue light is solid and the reed light on the apm is giving a single flash... do you know what the issue could be? only the rightmost green LED on transmitter is lit.

    Sorry for the late reply, we have been out of cell service and internet the past week and are just catching up on stuff. Just to confirm, all of your channels are working properly and show up appropriately right?(eg: roll isn't inverted or accidentally swapped with yaw)

    Im not completely sure. i have bound the transmitter to the reciever and the did everything else the same,as you did in the video... Also while your thinking about that question do you know how to fix the bad compass health issue.

    What has been your average flight time with this build? I have been using some online calculators, and getting some sad numbers. Most are saying that I will only get about 6 minutes of flight time.

    Without any additional weight, I remember getting over 10 mins of non agressive flight. I have since sold this copter so I can't run a proper test for you though. Also, it has a HUGE lifting capacity and if you aren't satisfied with the flight time you get with the 5,000mah, I have no doubt that it could easily lift an 8,000mah with extra lift capacity to spare.

    BananaScience There is so much to learn. And just when I feel like I have a grasp on it; I figure out that I am lost again lol. I will let you know what my results are when I finally get her in the air. Working on getting the mimosd and telemetry wires hooked up to the flight controller. I was actually thinking about running two 5000mah 10C's in parallel.

    About the gps stick... Mine didnt come with one. Is there anywhere else to mount it directly to the hexacopter that wont interfere with the ESC's.

    The stick is the best method as it keeps it furthest from the ESCs but you might be able to get away with just sticking it to the direct center of the middle plate.

    Is your compass connected correctly? I haven't used the APM planner in a few years so they could have also updated the compass calibration sequence. Do you get any errors?

    i had the same problem. you cannot use an apm 2.6 anymore is what ive heard you must use and apm 2.8. also when using the apm 2.8 you don want to use the 12c port. use the gps port and the one right under that. let me know if this works!

    Did you have any trouble connecting your APM to Mission Planner. I am not able to connect them. No COM port shows up under the drop down menu. I have the APM 2.6 and have downloaded all the right drivers. Thanks in advance!

    Does the APM power up when connected to USB? Are you using a micro USB cable designed for data? Could the USB port be damaged in any way?

    Yes, it has a solid green light and a blinking red light. I don't think the USB port is damaged, but I have wondered if it could be the USB cable. I have tried three different ones. Are there any you recommend? Also just curious, when the computer is able to read the APM board will it appear under ports in Device Manager?

    I don't use Windows so I'm not sure. I am sure though that the APM configurator should recognise it and pull up the proper port if it is detecting your APM. If you aren't 100% sure of your micro USB cables, you could try syncing your phone with one to test or just get this one which I'm 100% sure works: amzn.to/2DQIRCo

    I have a similar hexacopter (much larger lol) but it flies a little weird. Will putting stronger motors increase stability?

    How does it fly weird? It's probably either due to unbalanced props, bad stock PIDs/bad PID tune, sensor issues, or flight controller voodoo magic beyond our control. What size are your motors? Either way, increasing motor size probably won't help.

    BananaScience gartt ML 2212 920kv brushless motors with 40a simonk ESC and 2.5apm with External gps. Props are 10x4.5 and are cheap plastic kind. It flies ok but it could do much much better

    What frame are you running? Those motors seem pretty powerful already, but those fat 40a ESCs could probably take a larger motor if you wanted...

    It's up to you if you want to get better/larger motors but I don't think it's the cause of your strange flight performance.

    Arming is a safety precaution feature in almost all multirotors so you don't accidentally turn your props on when your holding the copter. Arming the multirotor allows the motors to spin when you increase throttle. Here's a good article: ardupilot.org/copter/docs/arming_the_motors.html

    No problem! The APM 2.8 is very similar to the 2.6 and setup should be pretty similar.

    I am not the expert on long range FPV, but with the 10km range you're talking about, you probably would want to start looking into some lower frequency stuff. I would suggest starting by searching "1.2ghz FPV" on google. Just an FYI, you're probably looking at least a few hundred dollars of gear.

    It really depends on the load you're carrying. Without any load, you should expect 10-15 mins using the power system I used.

    Are you receiving signals from all of your channels? There are some pre-arm checks that APM goes through before allowing you to arm. Check this out: ardupilot.org/copter/docs/prearm_safety_check.html

    So I did a little research and think that you are supposed to say that it isn't a linux board. Is the right port selected and the FC is being recognised by the computer? Have you tried putting into bootloader mode or powering it from a 5V BEC as well as the USB? I haven't used my APM in a few years so my APM knowledge is a bit rusty...

    It definitely won't burn out your ESC's as it is only a 3s LiPo. My only concern would be that those batteries would be too heavy. If you could lift them though, you would get some epic flight time! One of them is probably sufficient.

    My APM 2.8 when powered on either through USB or bat. The led by the gps is always red. Sometimes a yellow led will flash in same area. I have never had a green light so does that mean my APM 2.8 isn't working correctly? I hope not. I purchased my S500 kit off eBay and right from the start I had 4 bad ESC's and 2 bad motors! The seller (said) he will send out 2 new motors and 4 new ESC's and a Gps until/M8N gps-compass. I've been seeing other APM 2.8 f.c's out there on the KZread and they have the green light on right next to gps when they power the APM. I hope I don't also have a bad APM

    BananaScience yeah I agree, I'm not holding my breath in him sending out new ones. He had the guts to ask me if I'd remove my negative feedback I left on his product. I said you are crazy if you think I'm going to remove any my feedback. I said I'll remove it when I receive my unbroken new things. Also I found out later that he isn't even from the U.S like he states on his products page. He is from some small town in china. I also put a stop payment on my credit card until he fixes this which really got him moving! Like I said though I'm not holding me breath I'm sure I've been had.

    That should work as long as it has PWM outputs if you want to use a similar configuration to the one I use in this video. 4 channels is pretty limited though since you can't have any auxiliary switches to enable RTH or any other modes just as a side note.

    What wires of the ESC are you talking about? The power wires are fine to disconnect and the motor wires can be disconnected to be rearranged. Their order doesn't matter. The only way that I could see a short circuit happening is if you intentionally shorted two of the motor wires and turned up your throttle.
