I had my Basenji, Benji, for 15 years. It’s the only kind of dog I’d ever want to have again. He was very lovable and the cutest thing in the world......the best years of my life!

I have had 4, all lived past 13, one made it to 16, absolutely adore them! They're the best!

I have had 5 Basenjis over my life time. This video is a fair evaluation of the breed. Beware of Basenji desire to run free. I lost one gorges show Basenji when he ran loose and was sadly run over by a car. I still really miss him.

I had a besenji once. He was the best pet I ever had and a loyal and devoted friend. He loved to run with me and could run great distances. I would even enter him in road races with me. Benji❤

Our Odie is half Basenji and half German Shepherd! He's quite the combo of both. He baroos AND barks. Barely sheds and loves our warm temps but he's not a fan of the cold, we stay pretty warm here in New Mexico USA. Basenjis are really rare here, so the vet was as shocked as us. The pound had him listed as a "lab mix". He's awesome!

I had a basenji Aussie mix ......he could baroo and yodel and bark......that was the most amazing dog.........his face was so expressive..........our communication was extraordinary

I have lived with 3 Basenjis, all siblings from a reputable breeder, and could not imagine being with any other breed. My oldest boy got to be 15.5 years.

Being a kid in the 1960's and starting off around with our 1st Basenji female and the getting a male eventually having more than one litter was a great experience on the similarities and their independent personalities and behavior. I have been around at least one or more Basenji's throgh the decades and have gotten to love and realize how much fun they are and mischievous they can be. The fun part and it can be challenging is trying to outsmart them.

But the owner needs to be the Alpha.

I have been learning about the Basenji for a few weeks. I want to make sure that my wife & I could be the best parents as possible and make our future children very happy & healthy (like to get 2 brothers or 2 sisters). It will be my first time having Basenjis, we are retirees and we like to go for long walks & be active. I think our concern is that when we travel we have to plan for all of us, I don’t foresee living them for someone else to take care of them. Please, Experience owners and breeders of this magnificent breed, can you advise if we are on the right path . What else should we know to prepare ourselves or do you think, knowing what I described above, that we are good candidates? Your advice will be highly appreciated .. thank you

Best dog I ever had. Show wise, his wall of ribbons were 32 blue and only 1 red. Red came about when at a show, the judge did not wash is hands after lunch and a smoke,,,, Stafford-Ames Morse

H Mathias Etienne. You're right, that's why they rate 9/10. Ratings are from the owner's point of view. A barking all day dog will rate 1/10. Hope it helps!

Jayson J-Son Knight I have a basenji with two cats. Got her when she was a puppy. The cats are used to her although she does want to play with and chase them. Sometimes we have to stop her as she gets too excited. Other times they’ll drink and eat next to each other or just hang around. Basenjis love to chase and cats don’t like to be chased. Just have to supervise her when she’s in a playful mood with the cats.

Hi Jesper Bengtsson. Yes, because they don't bark they rate 9/10. For all negatives aspects like barking, sheding, drooling and so on, the less they do the higher the rating. If they bark too much, they will have 2/10... Hope it helps :)

Basenji are not one of the dog breeds that hate the most to stay alone (6/10). But you know that it is of course an average. All dogs are not the same.. It is also a question of training. It's hard to give you tips, but sometimes technology can help. A video of you talking to him that turns over and over on a screen can delude ;-))

@@jesperjesper955 leaving a Basenji alone inside your home is not a good idea. destructive. a secure back yard is okay. another dog helps alot. a bored Basenji is trouble.

Basenji 's can have an anxiety factor when left alone for more than six hours. Our boy likes to amuse himself by chewing on things. We solved the problem by getting him an extra large metal cage that sits in a corner of our livingroom. It's his bed, and his safe place so others (dogs, cats, or children that hit) cannot bother him. It has a table top so it blends in with the furniture. He loves his space!
