You should do a deeper dive into that tour of Japan that Babe Ruth went on. He went with a major league all-star team with guys like Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx among others, but the interesting player was their catcher, a relative unknown by the name of Moe Berg. Berg was planted there by the US government to get pictures and information on Japan's infrastructure which turned out to be very valuable during World War II.

Huh, I’d always assumed Japanese baseball started with the occupation after the war, but it totally makes sense that it goes back to the start of industrialization which also brought a large American influence.

After the dissolution of professional baseball in Cuba in 1961, it was replaced by the amateur Serie Nacional de Béisbol, which completed its 61st season this summer. It culminated with crowning the Alazanes de Granma as National champions over the Cocodrilos of Matanzas 4 games to 3.

In "Glory of Their TImes" (must read imo) - Lefty O'Doul describes how he was on an All Star team visit to Japan in 1931 (maybe same one as Ruth?). He liked it there, and in the '30's coached there at college level. He got involved with development of pro ball there & he is the one that named the Tokyo Giants. (he was with NY Giants at the time.)

There is an awesome and well-known sports bar in San Francisco called Lefty O'Doul's that's been there since the 1950's. Its a huge SF Giants bar with tons of photos of old baseball greats and memorabilia. I was lucky enough to have gone there more than once. Lefty O'Doul was born in San Francisco and I believe he died there as well. The bar was such a cool place to go especially if you are a baseball fan. Sadly, it closed down forever about 5 years ago I think. Heartbreaking!

Exhibition games (not during the regular season) occur periodically. For instance, the Baltimore Orioles went to Havana for a pair of games with Cuba's national team in 1999. The Brooklyn Dodgers played 20 exhibition games in Japan in 1956.
