I'm so glad they chose an angle where you can really see the break.
Good video. what I liked is that he shows a nice systematic approach for throwing a specific type of pitch.
When John did these takes, it was last minute and single takes only... Nothing professional with no script if you will... John has always made it a point to help out upcoming youth with improving their abilities to reach their goal of MLB.. He too had a dream and captured that dream right out of High School... I've known John all our lives, he's a great guy and one helluva pitcher... Too bad he injured his arm young...
I do the same. I pitched that way since my little league coach taught me to throw it that way. He said it had less tension on the wrist and causes less damage. He also taught us a knucklecurve. my slider has the same velocity as my 4 seam and is basically the reason why i was picked up by FSU
Wow there are a lot of nuances behind throwing some of these different pitches.
thank you so much.i love these pitches.this guy is awesome
You are 100% right. Ball grib, fore-arm + wrist movements, that the only thing you have to change.
what a great vid. Wish I had these when I was a kid!
Yea, a good slider can be an "out pitch" and get a hurler out of a jam..spot your fastball and mix in maybe a straight change..& John shows you how to hold the ball & deliver it..I love baseball & like to mix tunes into my drills..Try ACE DIAMOND's "Playin' Baseball" -CD(12-songs) makes your workouts more fun!..great old & new tunes here!
i liked the video...clear and simple...we don't get much baseball related things shown on tv in the UK, i don't know much about baseball but i like it...his pitch seemed fast and broke quite late..don't if thats how to say it...but its what i think...
13 years being a pro. i think this guy knows what he's talking about :D
u are amazing u hav helped me on my pitching sooooooo much thanks
This is exactly the way to throw a slider..I used to hold mine the first way you showed but the tip of my middle finger was barely over the horseshoe..just my first first knuckle..Jack Lamabe taught me
I'm a right handed 17 year old and have a 4 seam and 2 seam that i throw overhanded and 3quarters at bout 87mph, a sidearm slider at 79mph and breaks bout 2 feet, 12-6 curve overtop which breaks 3 or more feet straight down at 73mph, a knuckle that goes left and right and down at same time sidearm at 69 mph, circle change at 3quarters that drops a foot at 70 mph, a Vulcan sidearm which moves left and down a foot at 70 mph...and no pain :))
As soon as you supinate, you change the plane the ball is traveling on. What makes the slider so good is its ability to come in on a fastball plane before breaking away. To quote Steve Carlton, "I hold it like this and throw the shit out of it." No supination, just throwing it like a fastball.
John Richard Riedling, born August 29, 1975 is a former Major League pitcher drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 22nd round of the 1994 draft. He debuted on August 30, 2000. During his Major League career he went 17-13 with a 4.41 era and 198 strikeouts through his last appearance on August 28, 2005 for the Florida Marlins. His post MLB career has included a stint with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League as well as baseball instruction. Google can be your friend.
@theSKATINGbananas yeah the way he taught it is perfect..i use the first grip..play catch with it and when u throw it right u will see a little dot on back of the ball.throw about 10 at the end every time u throw
i think this is the only video where he actually throws a strike
I pitch the slider a different way. I put my thumb and pointer finger on the seam that looks like a C, thumb on the bottom, pointer finger on the top, and my middle, ring, and pinkie fingers go on the side. I do my mechanics the same exact way as a fastball, its just my grip that is different, and i pitch a great slider.
@101blacklist that was what my coach said. i only throw fastballs. instead of learning breaking balls. i focus on my control and my speed.
Exactly; just ask Pat Neshek. He could be one of the better relievers in the majors right now, but he's been out for two straight years on the DL.
thanks this video really helped.
@jezzon2376 The rest is gravity, just because it falls doesnt mean it's breaking. The actual break and curve happens when the ball reaches a certain rpm and wind resistence alters the path it's taking, so when it's donme breaking gravity does the rest.
Great thank you I've one of the nastiest break now...
Yea, my circle changeup grip is almost the same, just the fingers are closer, and that goes slower, my slider goes faster than my changeup, but slower than my fastball, it is a good speed for a slider. But you are right, it is almost a circle changeup grip, but that is how I've always thrown it.
personally i throw a slider and a curve the same way but i come across sidearm for a slider the way i do it is put the horse show like a u and then put your middle finger on the inside but still touching the lac then dig your pointer finger into the lace and flip the wrist in the direction you want it to slide or curve
@yordano41 if your open to advise, then here you are. at 19 .. you can throw pretty much anything you want without worrying about your arm. when you throw a breaking ball at first start off slow and take your time with the mechanics. and its okay to start off with a lob. once you have the wrist movements down pick up the speed and then it will just come after a few tries. to get better velocity, you have to work on ur balance point and your follow through. well good luck with your pitching ! (:
thanks it really helped!
@oldsidearmer i learned it from jack lamabe and its all in the wrist,,played for 12yrs n throw a shoutout in the bigs n never felt a pain in my elbow
@spritedblue the best pitch in baseball is a low fastball with movement..if you get ahead of hitters and mix up your locations you will be suscessful
@ChubbyKola Cool I wasn't being a dick I was serious the mets are last in their division its hard to get to the majors and I actually wanted you to say I have a lot of respect for him.
ur right a slider is basically the same thing as a curveball but you turn ur wrist more sharply and later
i hold my slider on the 2seamer seam and the horse shoe seam my arm slot is 3/4 to get a little break and sidearm for a lot of break.
THANKS YOU!
so now i know how to pitch: 4 seam, 2 seam, cutter, slider, curveball, knuckle-curve, and Changeup :P
This guy should emphasize the pressure of the middle finger tip pushing through the outside of the ball. Maintaining pressure at the finger tip can make a big difference.
@bestwaffleg Agreed and well said!
@idontknow750 he might.. when i played middle school baseball there was a kid for the rival team in our region who was 14 years old that topped off at 82 mph.. but he also had to get tommy john before he was 16.
Hey John. Where did you get that portable mound? I looked online and couldn't find one. I'm looking for something that breaks down and packs easily.
I'm 14 and here are my pitches and speeds fastball: 97 mph (very fast, but my worst pitch) curveball: 86 mph (12-6, breaks about 3.9 inches since BradOMFG said its impossible to break more than 4 inches) change-up:85 mph (circle change, very effective) Eephus: 3-22 mph (very slow but has a huge arc and can be devastating to hitters) I play travel ball for the East Cobb Astros and I play with Ken Griffey Jr.'s son if anyone cares
i've only pitched 12 innings in my life, but i have 15k. I am only throwing 4fb and 2fb. If I started throwing sliders and curves , I could strike out a lot of batters. I'm only 14, and i throw about 60-65mph.
Is your opinion and advice the same for someone who is 19? I just started throwing curves and sliders and they move a lot. I just got caught up in the beginning because they moved so much that I would only throw that and it resulted in pain in my elbow. However I threw the same and with less aggressiveness on my arm, and I threw more fastballs and I mixed it up which resulted in me not having pain at all. Do you think I can keep doing what im doing with no teacher except youtube vids? lol
@Necrosythe2 what was the website that you told me that can help me to learn how to trow any kind of pitching
whats the best pitch to learn if youve only got a 4 seam and a 2 seam?
@marshalloo22 I've never thrown a slider, but I've tried to hit one LOL. In my opinion, the slider is probably the most dangerous pitch in baseball. What's your opinion?
@101blacklist i'm 19 years old, i don't really know how trow any ball, when i was 13 or 14 i use to play a lot of baseball but that was long time ago , you think that learning how to trow slider, curveballs, fastballs and others can be bad for my arm, and can you explain me a way to learn how to throw them, and how to get velocity
that was sickk. i saw it sink at this angle..
@101blacklist I found a way to throw a slider without doing any movement with the arm like supination or pronation. But to prove it I need a camera but I don't have one. :(
@101blacklist if you learn how to do it right at an early age its harder to hurt your arm that why i got taught to throw a curve when i was 10
i thought a slider was just a pitch with the exact opposite spin from a curve. So if I am right handed, than in theory, my slider should have the same spin as a lefties curve. However, usually a curve is easier to get power into the spin and easier to aim. I thought anyways. Like more insight on this from more pithers. Thanks.
guys if your lookin to throw a nasty slider, watching a youtube video isnt going to help. Makin your breaking pitch nasty is all about interpretting. In some cases if you dont even know the basics to gripping a slider, than yeah, you need to watch this, but if you want to make your slider truely nasty, you have to interpret, and mess around with variations of this grip, & slightly different throwing motions. Ur breaking ball and FB should have the same throwing motion, but u know what I mean
@oldsidearmer Thanks for the comment, I'll check out Steve Carlton's web site.
@Narranthus also knowing hes a pro at this, those trolls just have no purpose in life... at least hes trying to show you people how to do it... i actually learned how to do this from this vid...
@bestwaffleg Yeah, everyone on the internet is a critic, even if they know nothing about what they are talking bad about. I mean it is cool to get a real MLB pitcher to teach how to throw even if he isn't Roy Halladay or CC Sabathia, at least he is/was a real MLB Pitcher and knows what he is talking about.
@Narranthus true dat
thanks.
@chickererlol95, yes it is.
@marshalloo22 that's exactly what i'm practicing.. i dont have full control but i can only control 4 zones.
i'm pretty sure the tutorial on my channel actually shows how the pitch moves!
... It's supposed to break hard down and away to a righty once it raches the plate. It is uncommon until perhaps the Majors Leagues that pitchers have a great curveball and slider; they always have a tendency to develop one more then the other.
Aren't sliders more effective for pitchers that have a more horizontally-angled path in their throwing arm arc? If it's not dropping closer to the end you might as well throw a forkball for easier mechanics.
Fastball, Fastball, Fastball, Fastball, SLIDER.
there are millions of way to throw a slider, hold the seem just like he is but throw it like a football and snap ur wrist, it was worked for me for15 years
@mypresisblack619 Dont mind me asking, but how long were you in the majors? cuz i know he was...
@LakotaRaider Lol, I say good luck to you. I pitched from 10 years old to 17, Curve/Slider/4Seamer/2Seamer/Change. I never wen't to any doctors.. but my shoulder KILLS me now.. @26. Kinda wish my dad wouldn't have let me pitch ;x
you rock!!!!
he knows what hes doing he used to be a mlb pitcher
Cool video but I couldn't really c how to hold it up close! It still helped
I just followed the instructions and threw a 102 mph slider! yay! lol
@101blacklist hey man thanks for the advise but, i throw knuckle curve, change up,12-6 and 10-2curve, and the slider and im 13. i'v been doing this for about a year all year round and my arms fine.
Actually its Balk. Would you like to go for Double Jeaprody?
does anyone know where i can get a pitching mound like that?
@elFlakation or maybe you just cant throw it right bc its one of my best pitches and i learned it from this guy xP
expert village works for me!
I'm John Reidling, and I pitch good.
@jezzon2376 Arm angle is like if you have a higher release point the ball will appear to drop more (Obviously) , And for like a slider if you throw more to the side it will look like it "Slides" more to the left or right. And with speed and optical illusion. A human eye cannot percieve a 95 mile an hour fastball at 15 feet before the plate, meaning it is completely invisible to the human eye of the batter. Same goes for curve, the colieas effect,. Angle speed curve rpm it makes optical illusions
damn what accuracy -.- very bottom left corner at the boundary
ok ty.
A slider breaks away from a right handed batter and is a deadly strikeout pitch.
@yordano41 At 19 you shouldn't really have to worry about it damaging your arm You should definitely first get a good fastball and change up and once you are done getting those under control and feel good and comfortable when it comes to just how you throw the ball thats when you should really work on breaking pitches. If you are throwing wrong when you start throwing breaking pitches thats what is going to hurt your arm. There are vids that will help with proper way to throw and velocity drills
@420sublimesmoker Click the box in the lower right of the video that says "cc" It will turn off the captions.
when i was like 10 years i started playing basketball and my best friend started playing baseball as a pitcher now we are both 14 and he got the arms like a man lol baseball makes ur arms really strong now im joining baseball team :p
if u have a good fastball the slider is a good combo but if ur fastball is ok then the curball is better. dominacans start w/ curvs and sliders at a young age.but i think 13 n up is ok as long u dont over do it
Reactions: 1 Incredible. 1 Classic. 1 Ouch. 1... CUTE!?
Thats what I thought A slider was the opposite of a curve, plus I wish they would have filmed behind him or behind the plate so we could see how his slider looked.
@enochs3513 except for the fact that hes a former major league pitcher.
Hi, I'm Johnny Knoxville, and welcome to jackass
Does anyone know if this is is the same grip and mechanics when you throw submarine
@MrSparkles5017
8 жыл бұрын
+Matt Jane I think it would be the same but they throw it underhanded.
@wickedninja8599 Yeah exactly they act like they know more than the Reds pitching coaches who have been training pitchers for years.
The only thing that matters when throwing a pitch is the spin. You shouldn't turn your wrist at the end. Just keep your hand in the same position to achieve the spin without hurting your arm. The same is true for a curveball.
"Bam!" And josh hamilton just slammed it 450'!!
@austinschryer23 same here
thanks dude i want to get back at the kid for striking me out with that pitch :)
woww
he seems pretty young. did he retire?
@wickedninja8599 Thanks I mean its very annoying seeing people saying they know more than an MLB pitcher and all the coaches that taught him.
That is actually true. Way to teach those haters!
what i wanna know is where that place is so i can go train there :D
can u use three fingures instead of 2 because im in a 10 year old fed and have really smalll hand plz respond bak
i throw my slider side-arm is that bad??
