I'm 14 and I throw like 50-60 MPH fastball, and the best pitcher on my team ._. (I know more pitches).
I`m reading all these post and all i see is, I throw this fast and I throw this this fast. Thats good and dandy, but if you can`t hit the strike zone with your fastball or even throw strikes . I can care less if its 90 or 100 MPH
@firecat3613
7 жыл бұрын
Then again, if the only thing you throw is a fastball... I don't care if it is accurate and crossing the plate at 105. Sooner or later, a batter will get the timing and clock the hell out of your pitches! So, someone can claim a 95 mph fastball, to this, I'll usually say, "okay... what else you got?"
@TheMitmit03

Trouta Holic you can teach accuracy you can't teach velocity
@firecat3613
7 жыл бұрын
TheMitmit03 Contrary to popular opinion, you CAN teach velocity. One of the best pitching coaches of all time, Johnny Sain, often told pitchers that they had a decent change-up, but they didn't have a fastball. Pitching mechanics, understanding body motion, understanding inertia and the source of power; training and extensive work on these techniques, via practice and weight and resistance training can all increase velocity. But ultimately, understanding the physics of motion vs. resistance can make the biggest difference. I have seen pitchers, after receiving the right training and gaining the right knowledge, improve upwards of 10 mph on their fastballs - in one day! Accuracy is often a MUCH bigger problem.

Do NOT have 7-10 year olds throw anything but a fastball and changeup. Maybe a cutter if they are very advanced, but certainly not a curveball, slider or forkball/splitter. They will ruin their arms and not be able to throw by age 16.

Control and break will master your velocity learn control, break, then speed I can care less about throwing 97-104 mph fastball if your gonna be walking and hitting batters all day I rather throw 86-60 and have control over the whole plate and a combination with my off speed.

You give Mike Scott credit for "mastering' the Split Finger fastball, but give no mention to Hall of Fame reliever Bruce Sutter who won the 1979 NL Cy Young award based on the SFFB. 1979 was Scott's first year in the majors. While Scott was a master ... Sutter blazed the trail.

@@shtb_films5360 I threw a knuckleball growing up. If you can develop it while also having a good fastball, you can be deadly

I'm almost 15 now and already throwing the split-finger fastball (it's my second most used pitch, after the 4 seam of course) and for me it stays low until the zone, where it drops a bit making it hard to hit. Still, this guy said most professionals use it, so am I too young for it? (I'm also practicing slider/changeup, though don't plan to use them until I'm 16/17)
@DozaSlayer
8 жыл бұрын
It's just a hard pitch to master. Since you're supposed to throw it like a fastball, hence the name, you're not supposed to drag your arm like you see kids doing with the curve or changeup. The other issue is that young pitchers can't control it, so they end up floating it into the zone or it's consistently sailed away from the zone. Any changeup in my mind is welcomed much before the development of the curve happens. Mastering a curveball is easy, but getting the control of any changeup is time intensive
@monjessenstein
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I was thinking the same that I should prioritize the changeup, since aside from being off-speed it also breaks, whilst a slider just breaks.
@DozaSlayer
8 жыл бұрын
Don't throw a slider until you're much older. Curveballs are much easier on your arm whereas sliders are only for the developed arm, which also goes for cutters. if you have a moving fastball and a good changeup, you'll dominate
@DozaSlayer

The way my coach explained a change up to me, is it's sorta like a jump shot in basketball, it's about how it feels. If you find a way to throw it for strikes and it's comfortable, remember how it feels, you may also want to try throwing a 2-Seam if you want to have a pitch with arm side movement, I'm a lefty with a lower arm slot, so it works better with me, than it may for you.
