    I would love to see more focus on the timeline experience in video editing. Davinci shows the number of frames that are displayed during playback - which could help bring the numbers to support the test. Exports are usually a "set and walk away" for most users, so render differences are not that important. Timeline experience is by far the most interesting one. It's great that you've touched briefly on it, but many of us would love to see even more on the topic. Also coming back to your other videos it would be great to see which config you'd pick as the optimal one for the 14". Personally, I like that form factor so much more than the chunky 16, but I wouldn't want to waste my money by getting a spec that is choked by the temps. Is there anything in particular that you could recommend to get the most performance out of the 14"?

    I would agree that working on timelines, playback etc for various codec’s would be great. That by far is more important than render times. I would suggest video codecs such as Arri Raw, RED Raw 8K and 6K, canon raw - basically a number of raw codecs on timelines with and without effects etc. timeline playback would be more interesting for these two 16” as well as the 14” for these video timeline tests. Keep up the great work guys!!!

First I was a bit worried because I heard that the M3 Max 14" gets hot and loud pretty quickly. Now I'm really happy and really looking forward to my new machine! Especially after seeing that its compile speeds are a huge upgrade compared to the M2 Max and M3 Pro, but only marginally slower than the maxed-out M3 Max. This will be a massive upgrade from my current 16" i9!

    Another helpful video to weed through Apple's consumer chicanery lol. Also, glad to see the Canon 8K playback test again. It's sad more reviewers don't touch on this. Scrubbing through the timeline, moving clips around, stopping and starting clips to mark intro and exit points - that's real life editing. Exporting is good to know, but I feel like computer have made significant enough strides in this regard that it's not as big a deal as it was on the Intel Macs.

    328 vs 275 is quite a difference. Most electronic music production sessions are around a 100-to-130 tracks but extra cores will help with running more plugins so long as they're instantiated on their own respective tracks. That's why I ordered the full fat Max with 16 cores. CPU is most important for my workflow with RAM being second.

    Performance is an interesting subject. Sometimes it really matters and sometimes not really. It all comes down to time and if that time means money. What I mean is when working with video one has to really balance how much of a benefit saving a few minutes really is per project. We spend most of our time importing, organizing, cutting, grading and telling a story when we edit. Exporting typically represents a small portion of the overall time spent on a project. If a video takes 30 minutes to export vs 25 minutes that isn't really going to make or break the project. It's rare to need to save those extra couple of minutes. Obviously a tight deadline situation is a factor like putting together an edit at 4:00 for the 5:00 news. Thats not a common situation however and saving a minute isn't likely going to matter much for that deadline or a short form piece like that. Same for 3D rendering. If a long project is going to take 8 hours to render then only taking 7 hours isn't likely going to have a huge impact on the delivery of that project. In both cases one just lets it run overnight. More speed is always welcome of course but 3D impact darts to be measured more by 2x, 3x, 4x performance for real world benefits and not small incremental differences of 5% to 20%. I rarely max out the Mac computers anymore because they cost a premium and rarely have much real world impact on earning money and getting tasks done. It's more for bragging rights. Each new generation will end up being faster anyway. Thats why I get a more mid tier Mac and trade them in every 2-3 years while they still have decent trade in value.

Being media composer on a budget it may seem the best option would be binned version and to spend the extra money on 96gb memory (useful for those orchestral behemoth VSTis). Yet since I don't know anything about what is on those tracks, the test is not as useful as it could be.

  • @jonathannelson5899

    @jonathannelson5899

    @Frankie_G_ so any apple silicon chip is going to be great for strictly audio files only, but if you're also using multiple CPU hungry plugins eg synths like Diva or Synplant, or multiple instances of granular or convolution reverbs or advanced EQs, best to go with something Iike M2 pro or greater. If work a lot with large sample based libraries like say spitfire audio, you're going to need much more RAM as well, and at least a 'pro' chip. If you do all of the above like I do, at least a 'max' or 'ultra type chip is a must, a base 'M' chip will struggle with heavy workloads though it certainly can be done with some workarounds. Audio production is one of the things that demands a LOT of speed in the CPU, and higher single core speeds is better than slower multi-threaded ones - so M3 chips are absolute Godsends, as you can do TONS on the base chip alone. If you look at one of Max Tech's M3 videos you'll see that when they did the logic test it was the only time that they had heard the fans come on up to that point - audio processing needs a fast CPU, M3 and above are the answers to every producer and audio engineers dreams! Edit - the model I'm going with is a m3 max 14' with 64gb memory and 4tb of storage as I keep my sample libraries on the laptop for portability and so I can install a Metric tonne of plugins! Haha 😄

    @@nasprods789it’s not a good comparison, he’s using the same stock vst just duplicated 300 times. I record guitar on my pc which has a Ryzen 5900x 12 core cpu and loading up 1 Cory Wong amp sim plugin adds 10 - 15% of my cpu usage. 1 instance of L2 limiter with 8x over sampling adds another 30%. Gulfoss plugins, forget about it it adds too much, UAD plugins, forget about those also they add too much cpu usage These are extremely popular plugins that everyone uses, and they are plugins where just 1 instance can crush your cpu usage Although his comparison for music production was not realistic or practical, that’s not really his fault he doesn’t make music so he gets a pass. But it’s still correct that the 16 core is “better” for music production because cpu is always number 1 for that. Better becomes subjective when you know what plugins you are gonna use, also when you consider fan noise when recording live instruments or vocals close to your computer. Me personally I know by heart how much cpu my favorite plugins take up on my pc, I have it memorized because I use them so often. These machines are so expensive so I would just say if ur gonna get one go all out, if ur already gonna spend thousands, what’s one more for 2 extra cores, just do it. But I will also say never become the type of person to hoard plugins, there’s a million different plugins for each thing. Get comfortable with sound design, pick no more than 2 favorite reverb, delays, compressors, etc. And keep it simple. The actual music is way more important than the processing

    @@nasprods789I think unless you’re doing orchestral production there’s really no scenario where you’d be using 300 tracks. However this is a good way to show that there IS a measureable difference. I may only use 10-50 tracks but, once I start adding multiple plugins/efx per track and need lower latency for live performance/tracking, you will likely start to find the limits of your hardware. It’s nice to give your system a little headroom especially if you plan on keeping this 5-10 years, especially as newer software releases become more demanding.

    Hi Max about video editing: I'm not sure how many time lines there were in the FCPX. IMHO the best way to test the performance/stress of the Mac is: Using Davinci Resolve editing a 4+ timelines of 4K+ videos and then export to an H264/H265 final product -- the FPS at delivery and time estimate for the delivery shows how good your Mac is at video editing because IMO the exporting process stresses the computer the most - CPU-wise and GPU-wise.

    I think Maxtech missed the point this time. Yes the speed difference is not that big. However apple understood that and only allowed 36 gb vs 96gb as the next upgrade. For people who need more ram, the 16 core option is better since for $500 it includes 2 extra P cores, 10 gpu cores, and 12 gb ram. Then you can upgrade to 64gb / 96 gb / 128 gb ram so people who want more upgrade options can get them. Also people like me use parallels for virtual windows desktop and requires at least 32 gb of ram dedication for any decent performance so 64 gb ram works the best.

Being unified memory on the mac, the 32 gb always looked a bit too small, and the 48GB seems about perfect for my needs (with IDE's, docker, adobe, etc.), i can shut down parallels when needing more ram for adobe.
